There's always been a pitch warble to Augeri's voice. It was evident on Tall Stories as much as it is evident on Arrival.

It's clear there's always been a contingent of people that hate Augeri. Some just don't like his voice. Not your cup of tea. Move on. Some just fucking hated him so much that they wanted to ruin him. Those people in the later group will serve a very long time in hell, because they just have no fucking clue how gracious and nice a guy SA is IRL.


Personally, I've been tired of *anyone* singing Journey except SMFP. Seriously. Not a loon here...but the fucking replacement singers have just grated on every one of my organs, save for my liver. I don't care how fucking shot SMP's voice is....if you cant have him singing in Journey, hang it the fuck up and stop pissing on the legacy anymore. Friga and Fro have done enough motherfucking damage. Word to Fro - send the fucking flop-toped canine cruncher home to the Philippines, don't retrieve JSS's cell number off the back of the pizza box, don't go hunting on youtube for another fucking weak-ass facsimile......just call SMFP. I think if Arnel ever ate dog, it had nothing to do with survival. Most of the times I have seen dog served, it was for some type of celebration (Birthday, Holiday, etc.). That said, I think no one is eating it anymore. The dog meat street vendors I saw in the 80s have been outlawed and there is just too much social stigma attached to it now days.
I've ate dog in my travels (and horse, snake, monkey, etc). Very tough meat. Not very appetizing at all.

One thing that is very tiring concerning Pineda is the homeless story. It was 30 years ago. It has no overarching connection to what he was doing decades later when Neal found him. Yet, it keeps being dressed up like it was just yesterday and that Arnel went from rags to riches overnight. Not true, the guy had a job but wanted more more money and was on the verge of moving to Hong Kong again when the band contacted him. It really is a shame that Arnel has let people run with it for so long instead of trying to draw the focus more to his talent of singing. Wasn't Jewel dumpster diving with her mom right before she was discovered? Jim Carrey, Carmen Electra, even Halle Berry all spent times homeless. William Shatner lived out of the back of his truck with his kids for a time after Star Trek got cancelled. Hillary Swank lived with her mom in a car until they saved enough money to get an apartment. The list goes on and on.
The difference is they didn't advertise their misfortune. Most of it was dug from the tabloids years later. With Arnel though, the band (or maybe more specifically the management) has made it all about his prior situation no matter that it happened decades ago. And now, we have the film coming out on DVD in September, albeit not officially sponsored by the band.

I am on board with his humble beginnings being a nice bio piece for when he first joined the band BUT THAT WAS SIX YEARS AGO. Are Pineda's other contributions to Journey so irrelevant that the media always has to come back to the homeless storyline?

From what I know the Journey organization compensated Steve A very well and he did a great job for the band from 98-06.

I still enjoy seeing him perform when the opportunity presents itself.

He was homeless...but from everything I can see, it was in the early 80s at the very latest.
Straight from Pineda's wiki page which his fans keep tabs on:

"About two years of his life were spent out on the streets, sleeping wherever he could: in public parks, or on a narrow bench outside a friend's crowded house. In 1982, when Pineda was 15 years old, he became the lead singer of the Filipino group Ijos....."

From that point on (1982) there is no more mention of him ever being homeless again. What is that, 31 years ago? Talk about getting some PR mileage out of that one.

All Journey saved him for was a lower to middle class existence in his own country. They did the same thing for Steve Perry for god's sake. It's just how the media has taken the story and eliminated the middle part. The story goes straight from homeless Arnel and then, Journey singer Arnel. Never mind the 20+ years in between when he was actually working the club circuit.

Really though, since the guy isn't much of writer/contributor beyond being a hired gun on tour, Journey can't do much else but march him for a Dog & Pony pity parade every year as their main PR story.

I won't either Ed. He gave me the first opportunity to see Journey live. I had some of the best nights of my life watching Journey live with him. I WILL never forget that he helped me see them. I do have to say though, that his voice is absolute shit now from everything I've seen. He really seems like a great guy, but I'm not paying to see a great guy that can't perform. I'll skip the Augeri shows. I'm glad many here still like him, and it's cool that he's still getting paid to do what he loves. I just can't listen to the strained, pitchy notes. I'll remember him for his time in Journey and leave it at that.

Guilty as charged! Lol!! I'm sorry man, but with him sounding the way I've heard for the last 2 or 3 years... that's not rock. That's retired rock that might need to stay that way. Just my personal opinion. I'm glad you still support him, and I'm not speaking for anyone else but myself when I say this. I just can't pay to hear my favorite songs butchered on stage. Same reason I won't attend another Journey concert with Arnel. Nothing against him as I think he seems like a really nice guy. I just can't get over his vocals, and it's no longer Journey for me.

I hope you guys have fun at S.A.'s shows though. Not taking anything away from you there. Just not for me anymore.
