http://herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/man-of-steel-writer-superman-and-batman-will-always-have-the-edge/#/0

I think “The Avengers” was a huge accomplishment but yet the Marvel heroes don’t have the same type of archetypal weight that the big three DC characters have, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. They just don’t. My grandmother has no relationship with Spider-Man or Thor or Iron Man. Maybe if those characters continue for another 40 years people will start to have that, but I think Batman and Superman will always have the edge in terms of pop culture. A lot of people say that the Superman symbol is the second most recognized symbol in the world other than the cross. A lot of people recognize the Spider-Man symbol, but it doesn’t have the same kind of weight that the Superman symbol does.

That article was written and published on June 12th, 2 days before the release date of Man of Steel. They sure did talk about Superman and Batman a lot leading up to MOS's release

No kidding.

So in the wake of the unending silly at CBaR, I have to ask: would you prefer a Superman sequel without other DC heroes, or are you totally cool with "Kal" sharing the title? You can be brutally honest.

That's a damn good question. I'm in the high minority when it comes to this announcement, as a diehard Supes fan, anyhow.

I'd say at first, I was expecting MOS2 to feature Kal and only Kal with maybe cameo appearances by Supergirl and Batman that would lead INTO Worlds Finest.

I didn't want the rushed Justice League. AT ALL. I wanted everything in the DCU established FIRST and get JL maybe years down the road. I was really, really busting for a Worlds Finest eventually but thought the day would practically never come. I thought for sure that if MOS were to lead into something, it would be Justice League with a fast tracked MOS2. I didn't like that approach.

My 100% preference would of been a sequel to Man of Steel that would lead into Worlds Finest and a Worlds Finest lead into Justice League and WW, AM or Flash spinoffs.

In fact, days before SDCC, here was my post, drooling and playing around with the thought of a potential WF on Superherohype:

Close your eyes....

Zack Snyder walks out to MOS film footage. Crowd applauds. Zack thanks the crowd and tells them how AWESOME the film was accepted and opens up fan-questions for his segment. Once the Q & A is over, he announces he brought somebody with him.

...Hans Zimmer Man of Steel theme plays. Cavill walks out in his suite. Crowd goes ape****. Cavill comes out, doesn't say a word. He stands there, spotlight on him. He turns his head, and looks up on the wall. The theater goes dark. All of a sudden, the Bat-Signal shines on the wall with a "WORLDS FINEST" font beneath it. People in the crowd pass out.

/end dream.

http://forums.superherohype.com/showthr ... st26376443

^18th post down. Did I fucking call that SHEEEEIT or what? Fucking AWESOME.

So to answer your question, if there was to be a Bats or cameo, all I really wanted was to have a Man of Steel sequel regardless and the wet dream that would be Worlds Finest.

We're OFFICIALLY getting the MOS sequel in Superman's world with the continuation of the story AND the new Bats worked into it? Fucking SCORE for me. I win.

As a Supes fan, as long as this was always going to be in HIS world (just more Superman, really) and the continuation of Man of Steel, bring it the fuck on. I'm getting exactly what I always wanted and I feel fiiiiIIiinnnnnnEEEeEeEEEEeEeE

....PLUS I called that sheeeit

Amazing what added screens can do. Box office wise it seems last week MoS officially out did both WWZ and Monsters. Considering those two films were massively outgrossing MOS in their opening weekends(mu almost doubling mos' figure to what I think I'm reading now) it says something about staying power and fall off's. That is if one considers WWZ and MU solid successful blockbusters.

If Pacific Rim falls under MoS that will be something interesting, considering PRim is a film WB pulled MOS out of iMax for.

Pacific Rim has fared much better in the int'l market than the US. I think it's done well enough that a sequel is a sure thing.

WWZ took longer to make its money back than MoS.

Don't read into it too much. MoS hit the dollar cinemas last week. That's always a little bump.

Yeah, that and the fact that over half of MOS eventual domestic gross (just under 300M) came in it's opening 5 days (152M). That speaks to a lack of repeat viewings and weak word of mouth. Also MOS is currently pulling in about 1/3 what Iron Man was pulling in and about 1/5 what the original Spider-Man movie was pulling in this late in the run.

I suppose you guys are right(though I'd have to see some sort of stats on the effects of "dollar theaters" doesn't sound all that lucrative). I do have a respect for circumstances though.

I accepted MOS' second weekend circumstances and I should accept these circumstances. Gaining less than a quarter of the theaters both of your competitors lose does amount to something but regardless, MOS has made a killer in the dollar theaters, which I'm hearing lost 61 theatres, which perhaps is foolish given how it's doing fairly well in the "dollar theaters." Regardless, Man of Steel, givin' the competition and blockbuster movies being released weekly over the summer, has fought in the face of losing significant amount of screens. Anyway, this about concludes the BO. Looking forward to WF with a full head of steam.

The casting of the Bat is said to be announced in mid-September/early October and then let the brightlights SHINE...

It's the difference between playing one or two shows a night to a mostly empty theatre to playing 8-10 showings per day on multiple theatres per cinema to full audiences. You get less money per ticket, but considerably more tickets sold.

That's the reason for losing screens. You get Mos, Fast & Furious and Iron Man 3 hitting the cheap cinemas at the same time. Only a certain amount of screens available.

I like Luke Evans. Dude has a "Keaton-esque" scowl about him that would look absolutley AWESOME in the cowl. Evans also has some top-caliber chemistry with Cavill where not only are they good friends, but their on-set comfortability filming Immortal's could mean all the difference in the world when it comes to pulling this contrast off.

WOW. I come home to this? I sincerely wasn't expecting this and possibly have a few pee-spots in my pants by the sheer astonishment of this announcement coming so soon. What an INTERESTING turn of events. Superman/Batman is by FAR the most anticipated movie of 2015, even going up against stiff competition with Avengers 2.

I honestly don't know HOW to wrap my mind around this announcement since I wasn't expecting it NOR do I not know what to think but nonetheless....

....let the GAMES begin!

This sucks. I don't know whose hands (beyond Snyder's, I presume) were involving in bringing B.A. onboard, but they may have seriously cost the film a lot of tickets.

My first initial reaction is that most audiences aren't going to accept anybody but Bale so soon, but if there were a smooth transition, Ben Affleck is a big enough name with a big enough fanbase to allow people to recognize the face in the cowl to accept it. Though, it seems like they'll take the "experienced" road contrasted to Superman's young and edgier direction, which is always interesting. Judging by age and age alone, looks like Cavill would have a higher ceiling when it comes to portraying the Supes character for a long time and Affleck will in for a few films and maybe a one-shot since he's already in his 40's for that specific world.

It's not the same as that. They should have gone with a lesser known or, hell, UNknown actor. B.A. just feels...wrong for this role. Whether it's his horrible turn as Daredevil or that deer-in-headlights look we sometimes have to endure, he just doesn't come off as a dude who's intense enough to play Batman. I think we may be in danger of Clooney, Part Deux.

They should've gone with Karl Urban.

As long as Affleck can channel his angsty inner caped crusader, it should be ok. I still see him as the grinning toothsome jackass in Armaggedon, but oh well. The bigger question is, can Goyer and Snyder write a good Bat vs Supes films? My hunch is no....

For the record, I thought Clooney had alot of potential as Batman. There was something droll and quirky and slightly Keaton-ish about him. He was just stuck in a shitty movie quipping cheeky one liners. Val Kilmer, for me, never connected. Bale is the best Bruce Wayne of all time.

Seriously, I know you're a Bat-fan more than anything and Bat-fans' first reactions were always going to be this, but lets not get TOO out of hand with the Clooney comparisons. I think that is downright ridiculous to even think of such a thing.

Though, I WILL NOT LIE. If there was EVER an actor that I wanted to pummel and stop-sign (if nobody knows what a stop-sign is, it's a swift KNEE TO THE FACE) was Ben Affleck. They are going to have to sculpt the cowl to unbelievable lengths as well because Affleck's head is absolutely GIGANTIC.

Other than that, I'm a "glass is half-full" type person by nature and can see the direction if they can knock this out of the park. The suicide notes left around the world must mean that this could, potentially, be a great signing in the end, haha.

We'll see in '15.

I agree that Bale was the best Wayne of all time. I will always think, however, that Michael Keaton was the best BATMAN of all time. Very few, if any, can debate hard enough to change my mind on that one. As for Clooney, I don't want to acknowledge him for the sheer fact of me losing a second off my life everytime I picture him in the Bat-suite..

And his head isn't just large figuratively speaking.

I'm not a pessimist by any means, but when I think of the list of possibilities, and that this was the guy they chose, it just screams "safe choice"...WB has nothing to worry about, contrary to what quite a few CBRites are peddling. What they did is actually cost themselves some ticket sales with this bizarre casting choice because it signals (huh-huh) that B.A. will play Batman in more than one film.
