It's a great reference, as in dated? Because nothing sounds more like a "late 1980s" album than that one.
Dated? Like when your listening to the Beatles it sounds like late 60's. Or Zep sounds like 70's. VH 70's vs 84? I never get that word dated as it relates to music. You make and album with what equipment is at your disposal at the time, your successful at it & the haters hate. I think it's the one album from the 80's that you can play the entire album and it sounds less like an 80's album than any of the other bands of that time frame.
Sorry, I didn't like the tendency for albums to have gobs and gobs of reverb in the era. Try listening to the first Asia album. The drums sound echoey, the bass guitar is practically nonexistent. Rush's
Presto is their wimpiest sounding album thanks to the tinny guitars. That's what I mean by dated. Something can sound dated in a good way, or a bad way.
And you mentioned Van Halen 70s vs. '84.
1984 sounds great. Enter Mick Jones on
5150. He's proud of the drum sound on that album. I think it sucks.
