Biggest One-Hit-Wonder in Rock Music

Postby JRNYMAN » Fri Sep 27, 2013 4:13 pm

Now, I realize "Rock Music" can be interpreted vastly to include types of music some would never consider to be "Rock Music". So if we exclude pretty much anything C & W, Opera, Classical, Techno, Rap et al, and possibly anything currently in rotation on MTV, .....

When I was pondering the songs/acts that would make my short list, it occurred to me that there are some hugely famous songs that saw enormous success that somehow ended up being just a "one-off" by the band who performed it.
My shortlist at the moment in no certain order...

My Sharona - The Knack
When I'm With You - Sheriff
(Get It On)-- T. Rex
Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
Hot Child in the City - Nick Gilder
Lunatic Fringe - Red Rider
Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
Never Been Any Reason - Head East

Gotta go with The Knack or Nick Gilder from that list. Probably the Knack over all. Was there a moment that summer that the song was not on somewhere?

Yeah, and ya know even with as much airplay as it got, it seems like people couldn't wait for it to play again. Cukoo! I had the 45 rpm that I played on my folks' old Zenith console stereo/turntable. And, by God, that fucker had some serious speakers in it. I would crank that bad boy up to 10 and there was no distortion or any outward signs that the speakers couldn't handle it. IIRC, it had AM/FM/Weather band, 8-track, cassette, turntable, and a George Foreman grill!

Wasn't that the same summer that Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good" came out? That was another one you couldn't get away from - especially given the numerous radio formats that would play it. Met him several years ago at a benefit he did at my daughter's school one Saturday afternoon. He was playing the Phoenix Jazz Festival that night and as a favor to the school's principal, who apparently was really tight with him since grade school or something, Chuck and his band did a 60 min. "hands on" show for the kids teaching them to explore music in any sound imaginable, then played a 60 min. set. 2 kids from each class and their parents were the only ones allowed to attend the event. Ended up being about 60 people total out on the lawn /amphitheater. Really neat, personable guy.
Jesus Christ,Steve! Hijack your own thread why dontcha!

Probably need to add Relax by Frankie Goes... to that list. Like it or hate it, the song was (and still is in many respects) HUGE!

Lots of these out there for sure. Not so sure these classify as "rock" but the first few that come to mind for me is:

Jim Stafford - Spiders & Snakes
Billy Swan - I can help
Til Tuesday - Voices carry

I think Frankie was a 2 hit wonder. The only band to ever hold the # 1 and 2 spot at the same time in England,if my memory serves me well.

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

Again, not sure if this is exactly "rock" but never the less is a one hit wonder unless including the "Rick Rolled" movement as another hit. If so, he'd be a one hit wonder twice with the same song....just different decades.

While researching this topic, I was surprised to see that song is prominent on lots of "one hit wonder" lists. I never really paid it that much attention and never really thought of it as a hit. Sorta along the lines of Mexican Radio. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing that one. I think Mex Radio is a kickass song!

I think it hit #1 in Australia back in '80 or around that time.

One hit wonder is an interesting topic. It seems that the number of what is considered to be one hit wonders grows in numbers as years go by. Say for example, 40 or so years ago there may have only been one or two such wonders produced per year. Looking at the 90's, it seems there were hundreds of what would come to be considered as one hit wonders because of the grunge rock era. What seems to also have changed as well is the degree of success of these one hit wonders. 40 or so years ago, a one hit wonder's success seemed to last a while. The one hit wonders of the 90's in most cases seem to have come one day and simply forgotten in a matter of months, if that.

One hit wonders that we are seeing in today's music world have a very small level of success compared to the one hit wonders 20, 30, 40 or more years ago. And with these modern day one hit wonders, the one song that get them on the "music map" nets them something close to nothing in revenue compared to the one hit wonders of the past, yet yields greater numbers in public notice, due to the change in communications technology. Internet allows exposure across the globe overnight where music files are uploaded and shared. 40 years ago it took a lot longer to produce and distribute music.

A modern day one hit wonder in my opinion is such acts as Foster the People - Pumped up kicks. Fun catchy tune but probably will be their one and only. Heard throughout the world in very little time, the band yields nothing in revenue and will soon be completely forgotten.....end of story.

Interesting take on the subject Sushi. Today, a one-hit that really sticks will make you lots and lots of money!

*OFF TOPIC* Another "one-hit" type of thing that can and will make you filthy rich is to get the gig producing the current toy in a McDonald's Happy Meal! They spend a maximum of $0.12 on the toy but they distribute approx 100 million every week! You would only have to get the gig one time and you and everyone in your family would be set for life - and then some if you could meet the demands of production and owned the rights exclusively to the toy. The average run of a toy in a Happy Meal (not counting movie character runs like Disney, Pixar, etc.) is 6 weeks. Do the math and think about THAT for a minute!

Strike The Knack from the list. They had 2 other top 40 hits and one AOR charter.

My Sharona - US #1 (1979)
Good Girls Don't - US #11 (1979)
Baby Talks Dirty - US #38 (1980)
Rocket O'Love - US AOR Top 10 (1991)

Can we substatute it with David Soul's - Don't Give Up On Us Baby ? Afterall, this is the only #1 tune the dude had in the U.S. I'm sure every time Starsky heard that friggin song while in an elevator or waiting in the dental lobby he was tempted to pull out his service weapon and shoot himself in the head.

Interesting about the toy deal. Actually a few years back I was thinking about going into the toy business with a half dozen or so toy ideas I happened to “cook up” based in part on how I used to play when I was a kid. One idea I had was a microwavable ant farm where if the ants piss you off, you just stick it in the microwave, nuke the little bastards and start fresh all over again. This ant farm toy idea was created for the leader-minded kid who dreams of someday becoming a leader of like North Korea or something. Another one was for the kid who posses strong interests in studying the effects and aftermath of earthquakes. The toy kit contains four empty glass baby food jars (just to get stared) and a short tips list on what type of bugs and where to find them to put inside the jars. After adding the bugs into the jars and closing the lid, the kid smashes the jar with a 25 pound chunk of broken sidewalk (or equivalent) and then methodically digs through the carnage. This toy was simply called “quake”.

Ultimately I came to the conclusion that no toy store, or McDonald’s in your case, would go for any of my ideas. Butfor a while there I'd love to see Ronald McDonald demonstrating "quake" near the drive-thru out behind a McDonald's somewhere.

If you include Soul's "hit" then you are obligated to include Taavolta's abomination as well. Remember that one? Here's him performing it on Bandstand. It really gets good when he starts acting out the song about half way through.

American Pie by Don Mclean is probably the poster child for a one hit wonder. A bit before my time, but it was a huge hit and still gets a ton of air play today.

Everett, hands down, that's some funny shit!

My favorite one hit wonder to this day is "Kung-Fu Fighting", Oh, oh, oh, oh....Love that for some reason. On a side note did anyone ever read this story on "My Sharona"? And by the way, My Sharona is great!

Over 30 years ago, a band called The Knack catapulted to stardom with its hit, "My Sharona." It also made a star out of its muse, a woman named — not surprisingly — Sharona.

The Knack's lead singer Doug Fieger wrote the song for the then-teenager who would become his girlfriend, Sharona Alperin. Fieger died last month after a battle with lung cancer. Alperin, who stayed friends with him, was one of the people at his side during those last days.

Sharona Alperin is now a real estate agent in Los Angeles. But she still remembers when she was introduced to Doug Fieger, by his girlfriend.

"I was about 16 or 17 at the time," Alperin told host Guy Raz. "He was nine years older than me. And within a month or two later, he told me that, 'I'm in love with you, you're my soulmate, you're my other half, we're going to be together one day.' And I was madly in love with my boyfriend at the time, and so it took a year for me to leave my boyfriend."

Alperin remembers the day when she first heard "My Sharona" — before she and Fieger were an item.

"One day, on my lunch break from my clothing store, I went to their [The Knack's] rehearsal," she says. "And I saw maybe Burton [Averee] or Doug [Fieger] say, 'Should we play it? Should we play it? All right, let's play it for her.' And I sat down. Cut to: I'm driving back to the clothing store, and I'm thinking, 'Did I just hear a song with my name in it?'"

The cover art of the single "My Sharona" actually features Alperin posing in a revealing tank top and tight jeans. For some time, she was famous in her own right.

"That was, like, my normal outfit, what I wore all the time, by the way," she says, laughing. "I guess I didn't look at myself as a celebrity, but people were very excited when they met me. And I remember going on tour, and seeing sometimes people dress up. And I'd say, 'What are you dressed up as?' And they would say, 'Sharonas.'

"Not everybody knew that Sharona was a person, or they thought maybe it was a thing. I think in Japan, they might have thought it was the male organ — that's what I heard."

Fieger and Alperin eventually got married to separate people, but they remained in touch. Fieger died on Valentine's Day this year, but Alperin says she went to see him frequently in his final months.

"A lot of his idols, people that meant so much to him in the music industry, came to pay their respects to him," she says. "And it was really beautiful."
