Just made my first student loan payment

I mean it's not terrible, even pretty affordable compared to some horror stories I've heard from other people, but it still isn't any fun

First time is the hardest, right? Pour me some vodka.

Thankfully my college days from 86 - 91 weren't that expensive going to a state college. Never got saddled with debt. College is becoming cost prohibitive and irrelevant for many. You can google anything you need to know anyway. 8)

Think about the cost from 79-84 then. Cost wasn't a problem and finished without any debt. Now, looking at all the fees that they charge, food is extra, parking is extra, administration fees, etc., etc., your like damn, just go ahead and charge me for air also. Colleges are better off financially today than ever before. More kids, revenue from sports and every other thing they charge yet they want more. Paying a fucking football coach over 3 mill a year? Paying College presidents millions a year? What???? There's no reason for it at all. The ones who should be getting millions are the professors who teach to our kids what they need to know in their field to be a success. My son will be going to college next year so I'll see how it goes then. I have planned ahead for him so when he's thru, he won't be saddled with any debt and get on with his life.

Another problem is the simple fact that companies are putting a premium on experience over a college degree. I've noticed that 3-5 years experience is the bare minimum in most job openings now and because of that you have an entire generation of college graduates working shitty low paying jobs that they're grossly over qualified for.

I know but here's one solution. In your Jr. & Sr. years get an internship or a job somewhere thats going to be related to the field you work in. Work there when you can on week-ends while in school and over the summer. If they say to start work at 7am, you show up at 6am. Leave at 5pm? No, stay till 6pm. Show them your initiative during this time and you just might have a high paying job in your field of major right away.

A lot of companies only offer unpaid internships, that's why I never did one at Penn State. I can't afford to work for free. When I went to a small community college to a paralegal degree a few years later a summer internship was mandatory. That one was unpaid and I lost a shit load money that summer, even working a second paying job I still lost money.

Just because you have a degree, it does not mean you are instantly qualified. You still have to train. No book can teach you on the job skills and IMO, kids today aren't the workers we were back in the day. It is called working your way up, not "entitled".

If you were running a business, wouldn't you rather have experience ? I have seen countless workers with degrees come and go, cause they have no experience/can't hack it, too busy with their nose in their phones and lack communication skills. Not all, but a lot of kids today want to be paid for posting on facebook...etc.

A degree does not automatically mean you are grossly over qualified to work a shitty job. If they had worth, they would be working a better job. Period!

Start in on the ground floor, do anything and you will be rewarded. Problem with kids today is they are spoiled and have a sense on entitlement to start at the top and afraid of hard work. If you don't put yourself out there (anywhere), you won't make it in life.

I hear so many kids with this attitude, they would not know a hard days work if a cement truck hit them.

No shit. Companies won't hire kids right out of college because they don't have experience but those kids can't get that experience if said companies won't hire them.

Starting on the ground and working your way up doesn't work anymore. I took a factory job after I graduated from PSU (2007) and I thought I could do that but because I was factory floor employee they never took me seriously, I applied for several corporate level jobs (even customer service rep positions) and they shot me down every time. I finally quit trying and left to get a second degree and was lucky (and thankful) to have a small law office give me a chance on a paralegal position.

I will agree with you on the undeserved sense of entitlement though. I'm 30 and I can only shake my head at this new crop of adults just coming out of high school and college. I was a farm kid growing up (on my grandfather's farm next door) so I do know what hard work is.
