Very Cool. Elvis & Steve were both Vocalist in the truest sense of the word.
There was no style Elvis couldn't sing, Steve's emotion was second to none.
Elvis's humility even at his prime in spite of his enormous popularity speaks
volumes of the person he was, For Steve as one of the greatest Rock vocalist
to Honor another is awesome.

Have to differ to some degree. Elvis was a great entertainer. One of the best of all time. Ok vocalist during some of his career. Nothing too special without the whole Elvis thing. Steve Perry is "the" vocalist.

Vocally Elvis was 2 1/3 to 3 octave baritone/tenor... with a great falsetto... and very rich throughout his range.

His recordings really don't do justice to the instrument he possessed...

New Zealand soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, asked to cite the greatest voice she'd ever heard, instead of naming Luciano Pavarotti or Maria Callas, said: 'The young Elvis Presley, without any doubt'.

Listen to the King sing here, he goes up three octaves at the end of the song... pretty damn amazing voice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpAzCUxSTfs

Both were outstanding singers from a technical standpoint.

Perry as a alter-tenor had a higher range of course, but we must remember that the songs he was singing were written to showcase that.

Elvis OTOH, was singing standards... and that is why many overlook his technically prowess.

Stylistically, both had their own way of phrasing that separated them from their peers at the time.

Elvis sang much more "in the pocket".. but remember he was singing mostly standards... Perry OTOH had to create his own pocket, since he co-wrote most of the songs he sand.. and this is where I think he separates himself from Elvis.

I'd give Perry the edge from a style standpoint.

Good analysis, Slucey.... yeah, I think Elvis was a much underrated singer. Many years have passed (heck, he was even a little before my time!!), and I think, nowadays, most people generally regarded his prowess as more of an entertainer.

Very good post. If Memorex feels I was trying to slight Perry in any way, not the case as I have the utmost respect for his vocal talents. However, to call Elvis's vocal ability " ok" is uninformed at the least. His range for a baritone was exceptional, and as Perry did the Live performances often excelled the recordings.

Big Elvis fan here. Didn't think anyone was slighting anyone. I just don't think Elvis even comes close to Steve. Just my opinion. Whatever range he had, I don't think he had near the control and ability.

Not to say he wasn't bad-ass and had some very decent years. I have this killer mix I listen to all the time that I put together with Elvis, Sinatra, and Dean Martin. All so good.

I guess the way I can put it is I can see Steve covering nearly any Elvis song, but I could not picture Elvis doing Mother Father. :)

Comparing the two really isn't fair honestly... two differing ranges, one singing songs he wrote, the other singing mostly standards..

Technically each a "best ever" for the instrument they possessed.

There are loads of quotes from opera singers who simply rave about Elvis voice. Pavarotti once said "Elvis can sing opera, but I can't sing Jailhouse Rock"...

The best at phrasing though was Old Blue Eyes..

After reading the idiotic comments, I am almost ashamed to call myself a Steve Perry fan. I can just imagine what Christopher Ameruoso must think of us. Congratulations, ladies; you managed to insult Steve, Christopher and Priscilla all at the same time!
