Monitro Studios - Sep 02, 1978

Hi, all,

I am doing a bit of research on Journey's tour history and had a question.

I've seen a host of sources (live recording sites, Journey tour history pages, Setlist.fm, etc.) list a concert by Journey at Monitro Studios in San Mateo, CA, on Sep 02, 1978.

My question is: does anyone have additional details about this show? I ask because, from the various sources I've seen, this is supposed to be drummer Ansley Dunbar's last peformance with the band, and I know, for a fact, that the band played at the Day on the Green at Oakland Coliseum on that date, Sep 02, 1978. They did play the Day on the Green concert from 1:00 to 2:00 in the afternoon, so it may be that they played two shows on that day.

On a side note: when I Googled Monitro Studios, the only results I got back were ones related to the Journey performance, leading me to believe that, perhaps, the name of the venue might be misspelled (Monitor Studios, perhaps). Curious ...

At any rate, I was wondering if anyone happens to know if Dunbar played at the Day on the Green show in Oakland or not. I would imagine that he did, since the tour archives I've seen list Steve Smith's first show as having taken place at some point in Nov 1978 at Superjam II in San Francisco, which may have just been an informal jam session with Smith in the band's hometown at an undisclosed venue.

I realize this is a very long time ago, but any info on the Monitro Studios and/or Superjam II gigs would be greatly appreciated.

Smith was with Journey for this show. Only other thing I know is that Herbie let Ansley go in Sept. '78.

In my subsequent research regarding the Monitro Studios session, I came across the "Journey & Friends" session at the Automatt Studios (AKA Super Jam II) in 1978, just after Perry had come on board. I've not listened to the Super Jam recordings all the way through, but, from what I've heard, they are superb.

I look forward to hearing back from you regarding the Monitro Studios session, as well, per your most gracious reply.

Are you sure this is the same show? Are you talking about the Superjam here?

I have both the vinyl of Monitro Studios (released as a promo for Infinity, I think) and the reels for the Superjam...but I would have to go digging for them. I was thinking Aynsley was on Monitro because they performed songs from the first three albums (Next, On a Saturday Night, etc). I remember this because hearing this album was the first time I heard Perry sings Next...and it was absolutely awesome.

Yes, my original query was regarding the Monitro Studios session, which is usually shown as Dunbar's last show, dated Sep 02, 1978. I mainly wanted to know if the date and studio name were correct or not.

That being said, I do know that the Journey & Friends (Super Jam II) sessions, which were recorded roughly a month later, feature Steve Smith, and not Dunbar, on drums. This, according the the accompanying literature in its various forms, looks to be Smith's first recorded session with the band.

So, if we know that Dunbar played the Day on the Green show in Oakland on Sep 02, 1978, as I am sure he did, then his last show would have to have been between that time and the time of the Super Jam II recording in October.

Thanks, again, for your post. If anything else pops to mind, or you uncover the Monitro and/or Super Jam II recordings and find anything that will help in my quest, I'd certainly appreciate hearing from you.

Completely different concerts. I have copies of both of them with completely different sets. the Montiro studios show is an FM broadcast of the final date of the Infinity tour.

Yep, two different shows, roughly a month apart. Monitro on Sep 02, 1978 (Dunbar's last show with the band) and Super Jam II at Automatt Studios on Oct 01, 1978 (Smith's first performance with band).

So, was the Monitro show done in a bona fide studio, minus an audience, or was it live before actual paying customers? I'll have to see if I can't find that online and listen. It sounds interesting!

Thanks for the setlist, Steve. Oh, to have been there for that one! I became a fan at age 14, but didn't see the band until my college years at the BJCC in Birmingham on the Raised on Radio tour. They were superb!

So, Montiro/Monitro studios ... anything on the recording that you have which might tell where the studio was located or any other information about the venue? Google comes up with nothing except the recording itself. And concert archive sites like Setlist.fm and Songkick show only Journey as having played there.

On a side note, I was able to find the entire Journey & Friends (Super Jam II) show from the King Biscuit Flower Hour on YouTube. What an amazing performance with some very special guest stars. Maybe I'll get lucky and find the Monitro recordings online as well. The setlist looks amazing!
