I think the problem is there isn't as much animosity towards Augeri these days. You do understand that calling Augeri a karaoke singer is an insult, correct? You may not mean it that way, but it is a passive aggressive insult to a professional singer. My point to Ed was not to compare SA singing OA to SP, because it was not and never will be Augeri's song. He, as well as EVERYONE after him, are singing songs made famous by SP, thus the karaoke reference.Monker wrote:It's not SP's song either...It's JOURNEY's song. In fact, if it is to be one single person's song, I'd say it is Jonathan's.
You would. But as SP was a co-writer and original vocalist of the song, in the context of this conversation, if it's anyone's, it's Steve Perry's.Monker wrote:Journey performing Journey songs is not karaoke with another singer singing it. They are Journey's songs...therefore, if Augeri is doing karaoke by singing it solo - so is Steve Perry...
But we're not talking about Journey doing Journey songs, we're talking about SA doing Journey songs - songs that were done by another vocalist before his tenure in the band. Your argument doesn't hold water here with regard to Open Arms. If it were "Higher Place" or another SA-era song, you'd have a valid point. Again, as SP is co-writer and original vocalist, certainly he would have the right to sing OA any time or place.Monker wrote:And, by your own definition, Steve Perry is doing karaoke by singing Eeel songs with Eel. Therefore, Perry is a karaoke singer.
I'm one of the few that wasn't crazy about that song. I get why he likes it so much though.Monker wrote:Do you not see how this becomes a ridiculous argument? They are both professionals...instead of looking for reasons to insult them, why not prop them up for having the courage and abilities to do this at this stage in their career?
I do. And for lack of a better term I've attempted to "walk back" my characterization and/or clarify/elaborate on what I'm thinking. I find it interesting how you choose to pick apart my posts and only comment on certain aspects. The bottom line is this: SA is a nice guy who was put in a tough spot on more than one occasion during his time in Journey. First, he had humongous shoes to fill. And he worked his ass off to fill them. He was great when I saw him in '98. But over time he became less great, and resorted to less than honorable means to keep going. He wasn't the only one - but he was a huge part of it. To suggest he's better than the original is IMO ludicrous, it doesn't matter which singer it is, no one is gonna ever be better than the original...to me.
