Neal's Best Solo

Postby FamilyMan » Wed Apr 08, 2015 8:13 am

I was listening to Revelation recently and rediscovered "Change for the Better." By far, it is my favorite song on the record (sorry Jeremey - no disrespect to NWA). As I listened to the bridge and corresponding guitar solo, it struck me that of all the amazing solos Neal's done in the studio - from Stone in Love to Who's Crying Now to Be Good To Yourself, I think it's his best.

Other votes?

I prefer his earlier, less delay and echo laden tone for his solos.. they are more focused, less busy... and to me, much more melodic..

Possibly "Stone In Love," but it's a tough call, he has so many phenomenal solos?!?!

Way, way too many great solos.

Just to throw out a couple that are usually overlooked:

A forgotten hit by a supergroup? Forgive my bad English on 'Forget Me Not'

If you were making a list of best guitarists in the ‘80s, I wonder how many people would put Neal Schon at the top of the list. Never one to lack self-confidence, I am sure Neal would explain that if you are ranking the best, then best Forget Me Not

https://youtu.be/-Qol7z-ku8A

Schon's resume in the ‘80s is staggering and today's posting of Bad English's Forget Me Not marks the fourth visit of Schon to Lost and Found videos as he has previously appeared with Journey, HSAS and Schon-Hammer. In 1989, Bad English rocked the "supergroup" label as the band consisted of John Waite, Jonathon Cain and Schon of Journey along with Ricky Phillips (bass) and Deen Castronovo (drums).

Their first single Forget Me Not stalled just shy of the Top 40 when it peaked at # 45. The video for Forget Me Not captures Waite in big-hair mode and Schon playing up his guitar god persona with solos in the driving rain with some reincarnation T&A thrown in for good measure. Bad English would strike gold when their next single When I See You Smile would hit number one and stake its claim to one of the most popular power ballads of the late ‘80s.

Bad English would release one more album in 1991 before Waite went back to performing solo and Castonovo joined Cain and Schon in Journey. Phillips would eventually wind up with Styx.
Perry's good natured bonhomie & the world’s most charmin smile, knocked fans off their feet. Sportin a black tux, gigs came alive as he swished around the stage thrillin audiences w/ charisma that instantly burnt the oxygen right out of the venue.TR.com

For me it's definitely earlier Journey stuff, but as someone else said, so many great one's to choose from.

Opened The Door - I could listen to this extended live solo for 10 more minutes than the original extension from the studio version. Makes the hair on my arms stand up.

I'm partial to the outro in Faithfully, only because I think it's their best song ever. The music, vocals ... powerfully perfection.

Neal's work on Arrival. If I can only pick one, probably " Live and Breathe"

I love this song … could listen to it all day long. Neal’s guitar playing mid-song, the bridge to last chorus stanza …beautiful! And, throughout, SP’s vocals started building up and up, culminated to a powerful ending … signature Journey!

One of my favorites, below. It’s so easy to see just how much Neal loves and needs to still perform. I am glad he chose to continue even after Steve Perry left the band. Regardless of anything that has been written about him in a negative light, he is and continues to be a great guitarist. Journey AND music lovers are all the better for it.
