Still, the very vast majority of the 20,000+ people in attendance were going wild the whole night and left very happy. Journey's radio and single success has made that impossible for them.

Hardly a fair comparison (Iron Maiden & Journey). Journey could take literally every song on the set list above out of the set and still have enough recognizable hits to play without even going to Revelation and Eclipse.

Have to agree with this. I heard Cain's speech from a few other venues (I think Jacksonville and New Oreleans). It sounds like he's reading it. Just kind of stark and like something you'd hear on the Disney monorail. Jon has always been pretty long winded and a bit corny when he talks on the mic. I WILL say that the solo he's doing now is completely GREAT. He tosses in a lot of Journey hooks from older songs, and ties them together nicely. But when I heard that banter I'm just thinking "Jon, yer losing them... keep it short."

But he's entitled I guess.

NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Keep in mind, there's no longer that respite for Arnel that there was when Deen sang Mother Father. Maybe Jon purposely rambles to give Arnel a breather.

You're referring to this setlist?

1. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
2. Any Way You Want It
3. Be Good To Yourself
4. City Of Hope
5. Open Arms
6. Only The Young
7. Stone In Love
8. Lights
9. Opened the Door
10. Who's Crying Now
11. Escape
12. La Do Da
13. Wheel In The Sky
14. Faithfully
15. Don't Stop Believing

Encore:

16. Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'

What would removing all of these songs leave them that wouldn't have a lot of the attendees yelling "play something good!" (you can hear some guy yelling this in a youtube video during the 2005 30th anniversary tour)?

Taking Don't Stop Believing, Faithfully, Any Way You Want It, and Separate Ways out of the set would result in a failed tour. After the first two or three dates, word would get out, and no one would buy any more tickets other than the few who post on here and are excited to not hear those songs for once. Guaranteed.

I've always thought Journey should do a theater tour for people who like them for songs other than the dirty dozen, but there's nowhere near as much money to be made in that, and Journey, like all enterprises in the world, needs a good cash flow to survive.

Here's what I managed to put together for a set, eliminating everything in the previously posted setlist & all of Revelation & Eclipse. Not to say it wouldn't be a good show; I would definitely attend it with enthusiasm, but from Journey's market perspective, it would likely be a total flop.

1. Faith In The Heartland
2. Ask The Lonely
3. Girl Can't Help It
4. Remember Me
5. When You Love A Woman
6. Mother, Father
7. Higher Place
8. Edge Of The Blade
9. Send Her My Love
10. La Raza Del Sol
11. Message Of Love
12. I'll Be Alright Without You
13. All The Way
14. Chain Reaction
15. Castles Burning
Encore:
16. The Party's Over...Hopelessly In Love

I remember Robert Lamm of Chicago addressing unchanging setlists for that band in an interview. He basically said some of the venues insist on key songs being played contractually and they have to do them.

May be why Journey does the "Dirty Dozen" (or Chicago hand picks from the "dirty forty" that they have)

That's actually a really good set list. I would just do a few edits:

1. Faith In The Heartland
2. Ask The Lonely
3. Girl Can't Help It
4. If He Should Break Your Heart
5. When You Love A Woman
6. Mother, Father
7. Higher Place
8. Why Cant this Night Go On Forever
9. Send Her My Love
10. La Raza Del Sol
11. Message Of Love
12. I'll Be Alright Without You
13. All The Way
14. Turn Down the World Tonight
15. Dixie Highway

"Send Her My Love" and "When You Love A Woman" should be regulars on in the setlist. I would also like to hear a few more ROR tunes.

REVIEW: Don’t stop believin’ in Journey

Posted on July 19, 2015

http://www.gigcity.ca/2015/07/19/review ... n-journey/

How many rock bands do you know that can not only fill Canadian hockey barns 42 years into their career – but perform with the same fiery spirit as youngsters in their first year?

Enter Journey.

If most “heritage” acts don’t fade away into booze and drug addled oblivion, they just start treating rock ‘n’ roll like their job. One they hate, that is. Not these guys. With joy, enthusiasm and stellar musicianship, Journey is sticking it to anyone who said they sucked, that they are corporate rock whores – and thank God.

For a full house at Rexall Place Saturday night, the band didn’t waste any time grabbing the audience’s attention with their 1983 megahit Separate Ways. The easy FM rock fave showcased the band’s tight instrumental adeptness and skillful songwriting ability to launch a show that equitably balanced rockers and ballads. The set traded between songs like hometown San Francisco ode Lights to feel good rocker Be Good To Yourself, to the wispy cell phone a-lightener Open Arms into the bouncy up-tempo riff rocker Only the Young.

There has always been more to this band than meets the ears. In 42 years of performing, history naturally begins to accumulate. The show covered songs by every lead singer the band has had except Gregg Rolie, a remarkable feat given Steve Perry was only in the band for around 10 years. What of the rest of the time? The Robert Fleischman era was featured in the blistering rockers Winds of March and Wheel In The Sky – pretty much the only minor key songs in the band’s catalogue. Both were sung by well by their latest singer Arnel Pineda, only eight years in the band. The Steve Augeri era, which was actually a couple years longer than Perry’s tenure, was given a brief nod with a half-hearted run through of Faith in the Heartland (2005), probably the weakest song of the evening.

There was very new addition in drummer Omar Hakim, practically a Journey newborn, joining the band about three weeks ago following Deen Castronovo’s arrest on domestic violence charges in June. While the former drummer’s vocals were missed, Hakim – noted more for his jazz work over the years with Miles Davis and Weather Report – brought a high degree of musicality to the band. His confidence was apparent throughout the set, but most noticeable for his decision to partially alter the original drum arrangement for Don’t Stop Believin’, pretty much everyone’s favorite Journey tune, without losing sight of its unusual signature groove.

As lead vocalist, Pineda did a passable job. He wasn’t bad, he wasn’t outstanding, he did the job. But it doesn’t really matter. Fans seem to have gotten past the “Perry’s not singing” stage. Fleischman, Perry, Augeri, Rolie, Pineda … it’s not necessarily the singers the fans love. It’s the songs.

In a set filled with Greatest Hits, it’s doubtful fans were disappointed that some of the deeper catalogue stuff was missing. When they were written, up tempo guitar rockers Stone In Love, Escape, and Any Way You Want It were lessons in how to create the perfect catchy rock anthem, but in 2015, the more remarkable component was the fire with which they played these old rockers. Three of the band members are at least 60 years old, and guitarist Neal Schon especially was somehow able to infuse the music with a tangible energy. This was no mailed-in Def Leppard or Motley Crue hit parade. Journey played like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves – which just doesn’t seem to happen for most acts regardless of how many years they’ve been performing.

The band strayed a handful of times from the standards, most noticeably during the rollicking La Do Da, and interestingly, during Jonathan Cain’s solo piano piece. Most people think the band got successful once Steve Perry joined the band; this is not the case. Journey did not achieve the widespread success they enjoy today until Cain joined in 1981. His spotlight moment interpolated a variety of lesser known Journey ballads like Patiently, Send Her My Love, and Why Can’t This Night Last Forever. Piano solo pieces are tune-out time for a lot of people, but Cain’s performance was pretty, engaging and skillfully executed.

Schon – who surprised the fans with a Hendrixy rendition of O Canada mid-set – also led the opening act, called Neal Schon’s Vortex.

The reaction was identical to what Journey was getting prior to the Perry era: indifference and looks of profound confusion, amidst some scattered polite applause. Those intricate arrangements, virtuosic musicianship, and flurries of passionate soloing sold Journey virtually no records from 1975 to 1977 and resulted in their manager’s dictum of “we’re getting a lead singer or finding new jobs.” Because it was virtually identical to Journey’s early music, it simply did not resonate with fans – but that wasn’t the point. Schon, the fellow whom Journey was formed around, don’t forget, got to have his cake and eat it too. He got to flail away amidst flurries of hammer-ons and frenzied 16th note soloing, AND play the hits that made him all the money so he could – you guessed it – play a set of music he actually likes to play himself. The man still plays and composes with the identical vibrantly wild spirit as he did in the beginning. Equally prolific and (oddly) unheralded, and much maligned in the rock press for being part of the pejorative “corporate rock” scene, Schon is truly a legend and one of rock’s most gifted performers.

Overall, Journey is a world class act who deserve every bit of success they’ve achieved. Most remarkably, they are still grinding it out, 42 years later, with the same fervour as players one third their age. To hell with Journey haters. Thankfully there are still quite a few fans left who won’t stop believin’.

Journey July 21 Brandt Centre

Jeff DeDekker Leader-Post

http://blogs.leaderpost.com/2015/07/22/ ... w-journey/

With over 40 years of music under its belt, Journey proved Tuesday night that it still has what it takes to survive in the competitive world of rock and roll. Playing before a big crowd at the Brandt Centre, Journey — comprised of Arnel Pineda (vocals), Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Russ Valory (bass) and Omar Hakim (drums) — worked its way through its impressive catalogue of hits. Amazingly enough, Journey doesn’t have a No. 1 hit to its credit but its body of work a wide swath of tunes that filled Billboard’s Top 40 charts over the years.

Midway through an 18-date tour of Canada, Journey made its first stop ever in Regina on Tuesday — at least Valory couldn’t remember ever playing the Queen City. The early portion of the set list was a mix of hits like Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) and Open Arms with deeper and older cuts like La Do Da and Stone In Love. Yet it didn’t take long to realize a couple of things about Journey. One, although the guys may be getting up there in age — Valory’s 66, Cain’s 65 and Schon’s 61 — they are still bringing their “A” games.

Schon’s guitar playing is exemplary while Cain’s ability was quite evident during a keyboards solo.

The second point is Pineda and his voice. Plain and simple, the man can sing, When Pineda joined the band in December, 2007, he faced huge expectations from Journey’s fan base given the success with former lead singer Steve Perry. It’s Perry’s voice that became Journey’s signature sound and Pineda was expected to assume and thrive in that role. “Those are huge shoes to fill every night,” Schon told me in a recent interview. “I’m glad I’m not a singer because he’s got a huge load every night to deliver.

The songs are what the songs are. There’s not much change … As far as our music is concerned, our songs are embedded in everybody’s head as they are on the record so if they don’t hear something that almost sounds exactly like that, they’re going to go, ‘Wow, that doesn’t sound like Journey.’ That’s the predicament we’ve always been in.” For anyone who had doubts about Pineda’s ability to fill Perry’s shoes, all were erased during Open Arms. The power and brute strength of Pineda’s voice was ridiculous. Some have suggested that Pineda may sound more like Perry than Perry does but Pineda has found ways to make the songs his own. The changes may be subtle, like a small difference in the phrasing, but those changes have allowed Pineda to move forward as himself and not as a Perry impersonator. Pineda especially shines during the ballads — the power and depth of his voice electrifies songs like Open Arms, Who’s Crying Now and Faithfully.

While Schon mentioned the fans have expectations of how particular songs should sound, that didn’t stop the band from tinkering a bit. A number of songs had different openings or endings — a way to keep it fresh for the band members and allow them to flex their muscles — but they remained true to the heart of the songs. Reginans got a special treat with seeing Hakim. A world renowned drummer, Hakim only joined Journey in mid-June after longtime drummer Deen Castronovo was arrested following a domestic dispute. Given his performance Tuesday night, it’s no wonder that Hakim is considered one of the top drummers in the business. As the band turned the corner toward the end of the 18-song, 95-minute set, it brought the crowd to life with a string of hits.

The crowd erupted to the opening notes of Don’t Stop Believin’ and joined Pineda in singing the hit. It was an important moment in the set as the crowd had been somewhat reserved up to that point. Pineda kept the momentum rolling, keeping the crowd on its feet through Any Way You Want It and Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’.

Schon pulled double duty on the night, serving as the opening act with music from his latest solo album Vortex. He got off to a bit of a bad start, greeting the crowd with, “Hello Rah-Gee-Na, welcome to our hockey rink.” Maybe he was just joking about the city name but it was difficult to tell. There’s never been any doubt about Schon’s ability to play the guitar but was it really necessary to open with 30 minutes of instrumental music? It was impressive but it probably wasn’t what most people were expecting. That is the only quibble about the evening.

Valory suggested the band would love to come back and I’m sure there are a few thousand fans that would be willing to show up and do it all over again.

Set List 1. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) 2. Be Good to Yourself 3. Faith in the Heartland 4. Open Arms 5. Only the Young 6. O Canada 7. Stone in Love 8. Lights 9. Winds of March 10. Piano Solo 11. Who’s Crying Now 12. Escape 13, La Do Da 14. Wheel in the Sky 15. Faithfully 16. Don’t Stop Believin’ 17. Any Way You Want It Encore 18. Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’

If these fucks actually play this set list I might have to venture out and see them again. It's been a since 2009. If it's in the original key I'll be there. If not, I'll see Night Ranger again. Second thought, I'll see Night Ranger anyhow. They're not afraid to make GREAT new music.

Is Cain phoning it in and simply collecting a paycheck or does he look like he's actually giving a damn.

This was the same setlist for the Moncton show last night. It was my first ever time seeing the band, and I was blown away!! Yes, I am a SP fan first and foremost, but these guys are still GOOD!! I wasn't expecting too much, after reading some of the comments here lately....Jon looks bored, Ross is just dialing it in, etc.
Not so last night....the band was just on fire!! The half hour Vortex opener was....OK. We Canadians are nothing if not polite, so everyone clapped at all the right places. I'm not a big fan of guitar solos, but Neal was so obviously enjoying himself, just loving being able to play like that, you just felt so happy for the guy!!
Arnel far exceeded my expectations!! He loves the crowd, spent a lot of time and energy interacting with as many as he could reach, while singing his lungs out!! He owns these songs now. A few subtle changes in every song, just enough to make them his own. The crowd was singing so loud, sometimes we drowned out his voice, but he sounded just great to me. Not SP great, but great just the same.
Jon and Neal looked like they were enjoying playing with each other again...lots of smiles, and when Jon would walk over to Neal while playing guitar, Neal would laugh and look like he was glad to see him there!! And no, Jon did not play the mouthorgan. His piano solo was great, just wished we had time to hear all those songs played in full!!
Ross was being his usual crazy self, nothing new there! Omar was great on drums, laughed a lot, looked like he was having a blast. Still wish Deen had been there, would have loved to hear Mother Father, or Still They Ride, but it is what it is.
All in all, I was so glad I went!! These guys are awesome, Neal obviously got to play a lot, so no long intros or outros, although during his solo, a guy behind me yelled "sing!! Sing something!!"......idiot!!
It was a hot night, no air conditioning in the venue, but it was worth every drop of sweat!! About 7,000 fans, me included, were treated to a great show, by guys who looked so happy to be there, and they promised to come back in a couple of years.....of course, they probably say that to every town!

Only one complaint......seriously guys.....45 dollars for a Tshirt!!! I mean, really??!! Oh well, I just had to have one, so I guess it was worth it!! Oh, and loved the confetti, it was a nice touch, but not so much this morning when I found it still sticking to a few (ahem!) places

Interesting read. I'M not sure he's won the audience over, but at least he's getting his new music out there.

Have a blast....really enjoyed finally getting to see the band!! Keep your promise, and come back soon!! You have some very loyal fans here on the east coast of Canada, we may be small, but we are mighty!!

Not small. Huge crowds.

My comment and Neal's reply.....looks like he was happy with the turnouts!!

Glad you got to see them, it sounds like the shows have been a lot of fun!

Did you see the Vortex set? I was wondering which songs he's been doing so I can find some performance clips.

Lady M, Triumph of Love, Awakening....for sure, not too sure about the others. He didn't introduce them all.

All good songs. Awakening is a surprising choice for that audience, but I still really like it.

I found a good YouTube clip of Lady M live. I posted it to the Vortex thread. I actually think it sounded even better than the album. I sure don't understand where the love is for Vortex on this forum. I really like it, and it has gotten some excellent reviews but it seems panned here.
