It's not rocket science, but like rockets, eventually they all run out of fuel.

Both Cain and Schon remain fairly prolific outside of Journey, so I'm not sure they are running on empty. Neal is always cooking up something. For a new album, 1-3 ballads should be the max.

I agree that they have to limit the ballads. Trial By Fire and Arrival were great albums, but they got bogged down in an endless onslaught of ballads. That is why I would rather have just ten songs than 15 songs with a majority of ballads.

It's not compelling for me to follow a band who is not creating new music.

You're compelled enough to be on this forum. And it's been five years since the band's released anything new. So what's keeping you here?

Smith back. Beginning of tour. My participation is nothing like when they were more active, though. And they are playing near me 4x this summer and I've yet to buy tickets...I might even just do lawn...and that's with me not having seen them in over 2 years. Schon talking about Kevin Shirley has me excited, though.

Anyone in the New York area...Smitty will be at the Art on A Gallery tonight, displaying his Fabric of Rhythm display. He's been playing jazz gigs most of the week in New York as well.

Awesome.

Arnel had a really rough life, but he is truly living the dream now. Given his background, I can't think of a more deserving person. Good for him. We should all be so fortunate.

After all that reportedly went on during the recording of Eclipse, I am a little surprised that they would be working with Shirley again, and vice-versa. I personally wouldn't mind someone different in the producer chair this time around if it happens.

I thought the same. And nothing against Shirley but I really don't think he gets Journey. I would prefer trying someone else.

Add me to that list. Bob Rock came to mind, but he might be too heavy metal minded for Journey. Mutt Lange is another option, but here's the thing:

Producers don't work for free, and music sales are generally in the toilet. Journey music today (especially without Steve Perry) doesn't offer a promising return on the band's investment.

Artistically, I'd love to see them have that 5th beetle to work with, but practically speaking, the math doesn't work, and I'm sure that's been one of JC's issues with working on new Journey material. He's not wrong. If they are doing a new album it's because of artistic desire, and that's fantastic. I applaud them and I look forward to BUYING what they do. If they didn't because of the reasons I outlined, well, I can't blame them. I don't have to pay their bills.

I am pretty happy with what Kalmusky achieved with Eclipse. Let him take a shot at producing the album start to finish.

Eclipse sounds great, but the question is, where did caveman's work end and Kalmusky's work begin? A producer does a lot more than just mix a song. He's involved in the creation of the songs themselves and has an influence on the final output.

Didn't the band only have a few weeks with Shirley? I think Kalmusky's role has been discussed more in detail in Neal interviews.

The band's been in a rut with producers (Shirley, Elson). With Cain homes-based in Nashville, it would be good to see another name in the mix. But as we've been discussing, the producer is the cart before the horse.

Define "rut." They have done four albums with Shirley and they have all been pretty good in my opinion.

Not really, but OK. Maybe Journey should add Gaga or Katy Perry, like you retardedly suggested in the Santana thread.

They could do something with Katy Perry. The album would be called Jumping the Shark and would feature a music video where Fonzie jumps Perry's Left Shark on a Harley.

They should take that photo of them in that location, but have a keyboard on the wall. Throw in some wood pallets and Steve Smith playing a bunch of 55 gallon drums.

Seriously- It would be AWESOME if Journey's new promo photos were a send up of the Separate Ways video. Put them in the same location with the same stuff but have them all look like "Why are we doing this?". Funny stuff.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
