No comparison tho. Carter was based on pulp novels from the early 20th century. Pulp characters don't have a good track record of launching franchises. =
Except Indiana Jones is pulp all the way, but it had Spielberg and Lucas behind it, so it's the exception.
John Carter of Mars is pulp SF, but still SF, and it was very poorly marketed (we agree on that). I thought the trailer looked alright, but it didn't rev people up. The martians' CGI was dodgy, too. But yeah, people didn't go for it.

Remake. Very low budget. Poorly promoted, too. But I don't expect people to "get" REH, anyway.

Good movie, too.
The_Noble_Cause wrote:Kull the Conqueror flopped. Doc Savage is a cult classic failure. The Shadow flopped. Anybody who knows movie history, knew there was very little expectation for Carter to be a hit. Disney also had no idea how to market it either. The dropped "Of Mars" from the title and left it with the generic sounding "John Carter."
That was the death knell, but since they weren't going to call it
A Princess of Mars (the first book), they should have at least titled it
Barsoom. Shit, even
John Carter Meets Cheech & Chong on Mars would've put more asses in seats.

Yeah, it probably won't resonate.
The_Noble_Cause wrote:The Lone Ranger failure was also no surprise. Westerns are almost always a risky gamble (see Wild Wild West, Cowboys & Aliens, Jonah Hex etc etc).
Yeah, but it had Johnny Depp. DEPP. As Tonto.
The western will never reclaim the glory of its decades-long heyday. The western is now a niche genre, but I'll take good ones like
No Country For Old Men (yes, it's technically a western) and the remake of
3:10 to Yuma whenever I can get 'em, pardner.
Cowboys & Aliens flunked out. All the non-SF parts were good, and everything SF about it sucked. Go figure!

Pretty elitist statement.
I can't take that seriously coming from you guys.
