JASON BECKER STORY
Chapter 5: Fighting against the disease ~ Encouragement of Steve Perry
Since then, gradual progress of weakness of Jason’s legs made his walk unstable and use a cane became a necessity. Of course not only Jason, but also all his family members were not selective when it came to choosing methods for his recovery. They tried any treatment that they could think of such as a spinal tap, which was known to give one of the most excruciating pain, spiritual reading and treatment by a psychic, etc., hoping that something would work.
One of the tough times that Jason had was when he had to inject Vitamin B12 on his leg with a syringe. There was a time when he called one of his good friends on the phone to receive encouragement and count “1, 2, 3” together before he injected his leg with a needle. As a matter of fact, even during the recording of the David Lee Roth album, he had injected B12 without letting other members know.
After departing from the band, he moved back to his parents’ house in the suburb of San Francisco from the apartment in LA where he had lived with his father, and continued his treatment while receiving support from his parents and his brother. Regardless of all the care, the disease did not know how to stop attacking the young body of Jason. Both of his legs became somewhat immobile, which gave him no choice but to use a wheel-chair, which had been his last resort.
Every now and then, Jason had pleasant visitors. One of them was Steve Perry of Journey. There was a time when Steve pushed Jason’s wheelchair to a movie theater to go out just two of them. Getting such warm support by Steve Perry, the idle figure, was such an encouragement for Jason.
During the phase, although walking was difficult, he was still able to move his arms and hands to a certain extent. However, he had to use his right hand to lift up his left arm just to comb back his hair. That showed how weak he had become. Even under such circumstance, being pessimistic or discouraged was not his choice. He even inspired and encouraged people who were surrounding him who felt empathy about his condition. (To be continued)
