Some nice noodling by Neal. Arnel's vocals don't seem connected to the lyrics. You can tell this was recorded awhile ago.

Agreed. Arnel sounds healthy and powerful but it doesn't fit for me. Love Schon's work. Not a huge Police fan but this is one of their better tunes.

Neal and Smith sound great here.
So does Arnel, but he seems to be "singing by the numbers".

Journey members cover The Police’s "Synchronicity II" to benefit Rock Against Trafficking charity
May 31, 2018

Three-fifths of Journey‘s current lineup — guitarist Neal Schon, singer Arnel Pineda and drummer Steve Smith — have recorded a cover of the 1983 Police song “Synchronicity II” for an upcoming album to benefit the Rock Against Trafficking charity. You can check out a video for the track at Schon’s social media sites and Vimeo.com.

Schon, Pineda and Smith recorded the tune at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Neal co-produced and arranged the track with Garry Miller, the veteran British producer and musician who launched the Rock Against Trafficking campaign.
The new version of “Synchronicity II” runs seven-and-a-half minutes and is highlighted by Pineda’s soaring vocals and extended guitar solos by Schon. The video features performance footage of the Journey band mates, enhanced by colorful animated graphics.

The “Synchronicity II” cover is one of a series of new versions of songs by The Police and Sting that will be featured on the upcoming Rock Against Trafficking benefit album. The charity uses music and the arts to help raise awareness of the global issue of human trafficking.

According to Billboard.com, other musicians who have recorded tracks for the album include Heart, Julian Lennon, ex-Deep Purple bassist/singer Glenn Hughes, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather, former Yes frontman Jon Anderson, Paul Carrack and late Free bassist Andy Fraser. In addition, Carlos Santana has signed on to contribute to the project.

Schon, Pineda and Smith currently are taking part in Journey’s recently launched co-headlining tour with Def Leppard. Check out all of the trek’s upcoming dates at JourneyMusic.com.

Do we know this was a while ago? Arnel's got his reflux under control and his voice has been bouncing back.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Rock Against Trafficking: Slash, Steven Tyler Cover The Police on Benefit Album

5/13/2014 by Gary Graff

… "This is for a very good cause," says Schon, who recorded the Police's "Synchronicity II" with Pineda for the project. "All kinds of artists are on this record. "All these different versions of their songs will be on the album, and hopefully a live show that will probably be filmed for the benefit."

It sounds like he's comping Sting.... I hear very similar phrasing...

His diction sounds really good here too..

Here's an article from 4 years ago about it.

EDIT: Tater also posted an old article about it. I know it's old because I remember Neal talking about it years ago.

I think he sounds like he's reading the menu at Applebees. No connection to the lyrics at all.

Agreed. He doesn't have the tone and inflection that Sting has. It's like Sting is telling you a personal story when he sings that song. Arnel's vocals are not bad, there's just zero connection to the song.

Yup, but otherwise I think it's a great cover.

At 5:14, when it brakes down, does anyone else feel like they could shift right into Rush's 'Tom Sawyer'? For a couple or so seconds, the bass and drums sound eerily similar to me. Also, I wish the ending had the snare fading all the way to the end, and maybe stretch it to 7:40.

I'd like to know what The Police think of this. Maybe there are interviews somewhere.

Serviceable cover, but overall it's too long. Neal's solo doesn't really mesh, and the extended outro doesn't work, either. I've loved this song since '83, and the one thing you do when you cover "Synchronicity II" is keep the tempo consistent — and they slow it down for a spell after the opening.
