They're all classically trained musicians. Three of them have Honours degrees. Tania from Sydney has a First Class Bachelor of Music Honours Degree from the Sydney Conservatorium and Postgraduate Diploma in Performance with distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Haylie from Perth has received a First Class Honours Degree in Music and a postgraduate degree in Advanced Solo Studies from London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Gay-Yee from Yorkshire holds an Honours Degree in music from Trinity College of Music in London and Eos earned her music degree from the Royal College of Music in London. That's how they're different to Kylie/Holly Vallance/ Aguilera etc.
I'm aware of their qualifications....as I said, a friend of mine had their first album, and she tried to get me into them. I learned quite a bit about the group from her!! My point is, they are different to those girls, so why are they acting like them in a visual sense?

Yes, some bands, such as KISS, Scorpions and Metallica have done the 'rock band with symphony' thing, however, I was referring mainly to the piece that is being used in the Olympic promos.......sounds great, but it sounds great because of the rock drums and some guitar I hear. Nothing to do with the entity known as 'Bond'.

Those rock drums and guitars you hear are part of the orchestra

I don't see that that makes any difference to my point.

The DPAS has been in contact with the UK company which produced the original candles for the BURN sleeve. For the first time ever they are looking at producing a limited number of candle sets from the original moulds (which they still have) for collectors. If you are at all interested, please send us an email (with the subject "candles"). The candles will only be available as a set of five. The manufacturers are going ahead with a test shortly. Provided this is successful and the moulds hold up, we'll be able to announce the final details and price. Everyone who has registered an interest will be contacted at that time.

) Also I have been listening/watching allot of the dvd from Queensryche "Live Evolution" but sinds yesterday I had to give it back to a friend of mine

I have to agree with you two ladies, Snakey and S-dip, Threshold's new Subsurface is great. Got it today, it's playing now, haven't heard all of it yet but right from the first track it is brilliant so far.

I'm inclined to agree.....I have four other DT albums (5 if I count Tali's CDR of 'Train of Thought) and I think 'Images and Words' is the best album overall, and I'm not sure if they've ever bettered PMU either.

Images & Metropolis for me. I don't mind disc 2 of 6 Degrees but I've gone right off Train of Thought. After the first song it goes downhill for me.

This show how dumb the Australian record companies work, a couple years Mike, the drummer of Dream Theater, came to Australia for a drum clinic. He had question and answer sesssion, where he was asked "When will Dream Theater tour Australia" and his record rep answer for him, and answer was "There no market for bands like Dream Theater in Australia".

Dream Theater played the Palladium a day after the Nightwish show that I went to. A friend of mine who went to the concert told me that most of the members of Nightwish and Lullacry were in attendance.

Are there any progressive metal acts from Australia? I bet naming them off would've proven Mike wrong during the Q&A session.

Yes, there are progressive metal bands in Australia. The sad thing is that most of their sales are in Europe. Vanishing Point springs to mind. I got one of their cd's from America. My sister got it from the band, but our local cd shop couldn't get it. Maybe Mike's record company rep was right or maybe the record companies should start promotomg the home grown bands here.

What Penny said also applies to Black Steel, who are a Perth based power metal band.......though they have a strong core folowing in Perth, their album sales are mostly through European channels.
Paradoxically, they are also more well known in Europe than their home town!

Same goes for Dungeon. They're from Melbourne I think, but they've never been to Western Australia because they don't know if they'll make any money here. They go to Japan though because they know they can make some money there. Sad isn't it. :evil:

From the previous posts I gather that bands/labels don't even seem to want to find out about the market in Australia... Without touring there, and some albums only available through import, they make it quite difficult for themselves to find out how popular their music is, or to expand their popularity.

About Dream Theater: I fail to see that there would be no market for them in Australia, if I see on the other hand someone like Jeff Scott Soto tour at least a part of Australia.

There is a big enough market in Australia. I think it's more difficult and tiresome to tour Australia than other continents. Many bands don't go to Hawaii either. And when is the last time you saw Journey, Night Ranger, Allanah Myles, etc. in Europe, let alone Holland. Same deal! Money!

Dungeon are not from Melbourne but Sydney, Penny.
Also the new cd by Vannishing Point is blow you away. Black Majesty is another Aussie prog/power metal band.
Black Steel is that got a member called Dave, who use to be in Allegiance, Kenny. I remeber when Allegiance play their 1st gig in Melbourne and only had 5 punters who came to see them. Next time they came were supporting Kreator.

I went to the Canberra clinic and we asked Portnoy to join Taliesin....he knocked us back but i bet he's kicking himself now

I'm a bit disapointed with Australias crop of powerish metal bands like Dungeon,Vanishing Point, Black Majesty etc....nome of them seem to be doing anything that hasn't been done before and done better. I know that is easier said than done and its great that they are all getting recognition in other parts of the world...but the only band in that sort of genre from Australia that did anything for me was Vauxdvihl.
