Nice to see a band like Journey come back and give us the full
treatment. Last year they were on a bill with REO and Styx and, like
many other bands I can name, always seem to be in some package or
other. I love it when my bands are able to wrest themselves free(if
only for a little while) to give us a nice LONG show. This one
certainly gave us our moneys worth---at HALF the price of alot of
these others out there. 2 hours and 15 minutes!
It was a bit more humid than I expected but okay weather for
September. Glad the hurricanes, etc. were FAR FAR away.
Steve Perry's replacement, Steve Augeri, used to sing 99 percent of
the setlist. I guess since it's a longer show he decided to spead
things around to save his voice. Jonathan Cain sings Just The Same Way
now instead of Gregg Rolie(who originally sang it on the album, 1979's
Evolution) Bassist Ross Valory, who's never sung any leads on stage
before now, does a bluesier reading of their 1980 hit Walks Like a
Lady. He sings it in the same key but an octave down from where Perry
originally sang it. I liked it alot! It brought back memories of the
Summer of 1980 of my friends and I hangin' out at the Shore. Current
drummer Deen Castronova, to me, was the highlight of the evening. Not
only a great drummer, but what a KILLER VOICE! He took the leads on
their 1986 hit Suzanne plus Keep On Running and Mother/Father. The
latter two coming from Escape in 1981. Man, what a range that guy has!
He could probably front the band himself if he needed to. Augeri seemed glad to have all the
extra breathing space and, instead of going offstage when he wasn't
singing lead, would go to the back(beside the drummer)to sing harmony
vocals.
A pleasure to hear some of the more obscure non-hits like Edge Of The
Blade, Rubicon, Dead Or Alive and Chain Reaction. CR(which was also a popular
MTV video) always got airplay around here on WMMR and WYSP. It showed
off their more ROCKING side.
Neal Schon played Star Spangled Banner on his guitar and did another
tribute to Hendrix with Voodo Chile, which he also sang. On Gypsy
Queen he paid tribute to Santana, the group he was in before forming
Journey.
Only downside of the evening was the TRAFFIC going out. Just like at
the Bob Dylan show in June, the concert was scheduled on the same
night as a Blue Rocks game. I waited an hour to leave but STILL got
stuck in gridlock going out! But it was only for 20 minutes----not 45
like last time! There's alot of other stuff down there now too, like a
clam bar, shopping outlet, etc. that only add to the parking troubles
going in. It was much nicer when it was ONLY Kahunaville and
usually(if conflicting)not scheduled to end at the SAME TIME as the
ballgame.
