Didn't they have a few hard rock releases in the 80's? I heard their old material was half-way decent.

Sure did JB.

Here is a pre 90's shot of Pantera

Image

They did 4 albums pre-Cowboys From Hell

Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle,I am the Night and Power Metal (with Anselmo) Phil sounded very Halford like on this album

That photo must hurt their present image... I wonder why they never changed the bandname.

Dead Soul Tribe-The January Tree

just edged out the new Mercenary album.

I have a song of the week as well.....A Vampire's View by The Flower Kings. Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation sings on this and he is on my top 5 vocalists ever.

Ayreon - The Human Equation... obviously

I like this album a lot, only Eric Clayton could have done with a smaller part to sing... don't like his voice at all. Magnus Ekwall, Mikael Akerfeldt and Devon Graves are excellent though.

I know now that Devon Graves sings with Dead Soul Tribe, but what bands are Magnus Ekwall and Mikael Akerfeldt from?

AOTW is the reissue of Annica "Badly Dreaming." I've posted a review for it on the Female Rock forum.

Eric Clayton's over use is the one minor stain on the perfect table cloth that is the new Ayreon album.....with repeat listens you do get used to his Bowieisms and his voice does sort of fit the role of 'Reason'.

Magnus Ekwall is from a band called The Quill (they sound a bit like Audioslave) and Arkefeldt is from Swedish death metal legends Opeth. If you like Arkefeldts clean voice you should definately get Opeth's 'Damnation' cd. No death vocals and it is quite mellow. One of my top 5 albums from last year....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...hint hint.

No death vocal death metal? Is there such a thing?

Maybe I'll just have to check that one out, along with the Ayreon cd. Saw it in the store the other day.

I know their name, and I think I've even heard some of their music... Didn't they do some weird cover versions?

Tali, The Quill I've listened to after a raving review in a music magazine. Not my band... :( I've also listened to Opeth's Blackwater Park because the same music magazine chose it as album of the year. Lots of death metal vocals on it... I liked parts of the music, but I couldn't get over the death vocals. So if Damnation has no death vocals on it, I'll check that one out.

Quite mellow, right? On CDuniverse it was described as "might be the quietest metal album you've ever heard". After having listened to the soundbytes I tend to agree on that. 30 second samples suck though; they are way too short.

I found on a different site two complete songs to listen to. Closure (from Damnation) was okay. The other song was The Drapery Falls (from Blackwater Park) I actually liked that song much better, the swirling melancholic (slide?) guitar was so beautiful... but then the death vocals started... :(

So, after having listened to the rest of Blackwater Park in 30 second samples, I'd say that I like the melodies of the mellow songs on that album better, but as far as total athmosphere is concerned I'd go with Damnation. Still, it's hard to form an opinion based on such short samples.

AOW is Balance of Power-Heathen Machine

Holy Fuck new singer John K sounds like Geoff Tate (when Geoff Tate used to be great). The label on the cd case calls it the album Queensryche should have recorded after Empire. There is some really good stuff on this cd. I like it a lot.

I've been spinning my Eden's Lie discs since posting & removing the soundbytes.

However, listening to the Ayreon hype has got me going back to my copy of Ambeon "Fate of a Dreamer." So that is my pick for AOTW.

Ahm, I'm back to Threshold... this time the album is called Wireless. It has acoustic versions from pre-Subsurface songs (and some unreleased songs? ). I was afraid it would sound cheesy, as I'm not very fond of unplugged versions, but it is really good.

That it is solid, does that mean that it doesn't sound any different than the other albums by Ten? I've got a whole bunch of them, and I like them. However, on Far Beyond The World and Babylon they sounded like they were repeating themselves... and did not have as many catchy songs as on Name Of The Rose or The Robe.

I wouldn't go as far to say the album is their best, but it certainly grabbed my attention with the first listen. It certainly sounds like a Ten album, but I suppose its a matter of opinion wether or not they have repeated themselves.

"Babylon" was my first Ten album...I still think it was their best musically-speaking, and for a long time, was also my #1 favorite album (before I heard Nightwish.) "RtE" was a good album, but at times I felt I could've mixed tracks from Gary Hughes "Once and Future King" and not notice the difference. The familiarity didn't sit well with me, so I gave up my copy to my older bro. He listens to everything that Gary Hughes has written.

My AOTW goes to Venus & Mars "New Moon Rising". I best describe it as the album that Heart should've released. Duel female vocals and harmonies accompanied with some really good AOR tunes.
