 ACK!!! You guys are killing me!

I have a laptop and CAN'T HEAR THE SONG YET!! Will have to go over to Mom's and use her REAL computer - with great speakers.

As far as any solo CDs in the future (here's hoping, right?), I LOVE the "Island Jazz"-type song "If Only For the Moment, Girl" from the "USA For Africa" album....I have that song now, and it sounds as good today as it did 20 YEARS AGO - I never get tired of it....I mean, how often can you say that about ANY song??

He should do an entire CD of that style, don't you think?

Glad you all enjoyed the tune...thanks for the posts.

I too think the song is great and yes, it's fabulous to hear that rich warm voice in action again.

What goes unanswered is how is Steve's total range these days. He can sing most things in his sleep (anything for that matter back in the day), but this vocal contribution is truly something that would have come with absolute ease for the great man and is well within his known vocal range.

I'd love to hear a new record - let's be honest - we'd all kill for that. But what came to my mind was I'd rather not hear a record of mid-tempo ballads and crooners from Steve - should there ever be a new record.

To this day I still piss my pants everytime I hear You Better Wait. Now THAT is what I'd love to hear more of - that lush, rich uptempo melodic rock with layers of vocals :)

Getting a bit off subject here, but feel free to add your thoughts.

...Me too. I still think he could pull it off. I would easily take another FTLOSM. You Beeter Wait, Young Hearts FOrvever, Tues. Heartache. Stuff like that. Do that AND the standards record, but not the standards instead of....

I love, "You Better Wait,"Andrew and I hear it often on an up North station from me. I agree, that song takes you everywhere.

Please don't laugh but I'd like Perry to write the ultimate song and sing it with Carlos Santana. That guitar with that voice would be out of sight.

Perry's already done as much with Neal. It's called Journey's Greatest Hits and I think it's got the potential to be a big seller.

But the Santana concept's still intriguing. The idea of him, a faded superstar getting together with a good voice/songwriter and doing a song might work. It should be a younger dude, though. One who's hot now. That might actually work out, get him some airplay and a possible career renaissance. At least it's an original idea.

...and here is the problem:

If you look at the credits for YBW, how many people are credited for writing that song? A half dozen, or more? Perry may have sung that song, but it's not a "Steve Perry song".

I suppose when it comes to Steve Perry, I'm a fan of anything he records. I enjoy listening to all of it.

What a great concept - Steve Perry mixing it with Santana!

He already has done that. Neal Schon and Santana are pretty similar. In fact Schon was probably better for Steve than Carlos because, a) They were together for 15 or so years, b) Neal gave Steve the sound he wanted, and c) Their success is already proven.

To me, it's taking a step backward for perry to do anything with anyone other than Neal.

Want a concept? Perry and Schon..That would be a concept.

MONKER WROTE:"If you look at the credits for YBW, how many people are credited for writing that song? A half dozen, or more? Perry may have sung that song, but it's not a "Steve Perry song"."

Well then please tell me if not You better wait is a Steve Perry song, what is it then? A Sam Cooke song? or perhaps A Journey song? or why not a song by The Osmonds!.....hahahahaha.......the song is originally recorded by Steve Perry and he´s also the co-writer of the song.
This would be like saying "Like a virgin" is not a Madonna song.....how stupid,Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg wrote it but who´s going around saying Like a Virgin is a Kelly/Steinberg tune?....Noone.....Madonna recorded it from Kelly´s and Steinberg´s demo.
Get your act together Monker and spare us from these ridiculous comments.

The new ballad "A brand new start" is a lovely classic ballad from Perry and Pack, his magic voice can be heard a lot on the second half of the song which can´t be heard on the clip Andrew posted.
I love this song and I don´t care if his vocals are challenging or not,I only care for the feel....and he´s got plenty of feel........ohyeah!

I don't think what Monker said was stupid at all.

I agree with what he says. Steve's heart is not in R'N'R anymore. I don't think he would write a song like "You Better Wait" on his own.

I love Steve's voice and it was the first thing that ever attracted me to Journey. I would love another Perry album in whatever guise.

A rock album would be my preference, but I'm a realist and can honestly say that I would take whatever he releases, FTLOSM 2, Soul classics or preferably an album along the lines of Street Talk, soul tinged but with a rock edge.

I too am looking forward to this CD.

Steve singing Sam Cooke is a good idea and Steve would probably love to do it  If he were to ever cover someone.

A Christmas CD would also be nice :)

Or a collaboration with John Mayer, I think they would blend well and maybe even get some airplay due to John being popular now.

It's the same as many other pop artists have done...a song written to be a radio friendly single and chart.

the song is originally recorded by Steve Perry and he´s also the co-writer of the song.

So what. When you look at the credits and see so many people writing a song - it's not ANYONE's.

This would be like saying "Like a virgin" is not a Madonna song....

I don't know who wrote it or anything about the history of that song, so I'm not even going to comment on it.

Get your act together Monker and spare us from these ridiculous comments.

Who says I'm not 'acting' with ever post? I think many other people who are in this forum do that.

You are a dreamer. Steve loves to do NOTHING.. Absolutely NOTHING..
Let him be, he IS gone. Journey are alive and WELL..Perry is history, by his own choosing. I did not throw him to the past, He left on his own.. Bye bye Perry. It's time for Journey to be Journey without him, or his memories.

Well, if it is time for Journey to be Journey without him, or his memories, then WHY did Journey hire a singer that THEY SAY sounds like Steve Perry???

It's because that as a band they feel that their sound is best served with a Perry-like voice (something that is paradoxically common for such a great singer. think of all the singers who sound/sounded like perry: Dave Bickler. Hugo. Chalfont. Geoff Tate. Steve Augeri. Who'm I missing?)

Red13Joepa,

You missed the point entirely!

Rockn'deano says to say "goodbye to Steve Perry & the memories". Obvisiously Journey went out looking for a singer that THEY thought sounded like Steve Perry, so then that would mean that the band members WANT to KEEP the sound of Steve Perry in the music, NOT say goodbye, as Rock'ndeano said above in his post.

You're right Lori, you're always right.

Tell you what, I will continue to go to Journey shows, 3.5 hour shows, and listen to NEW CD's, and you listen to O Sherrie for the 12th billionth and a half time, ok?

Have fun sweetheart--

Properry, I did NOT miss your point entirely. Don't you think it woulda been easier critically on the band to go to a completely different-sounding vocalist like Van halen did or Foreigner with Edwards? Instead they chose the path of most resistance and went with auditioning Perry-like singers knowing full well the bashing that would set them up for from critics like you. They wanted to keep the sound of the band intact, not necessarily for the arbitrary purpose of ripping off Perry but b/c they wanted their sound to stay intact. Don't you think, my friend, that if they REALLY wanted to fool casual fans and pawn him off as Perry they would've gotten someone like Hugo who LOOKS like Perry as well? Augeri looks NOTHING like Perry.
