But I think the issue here is if Steve can sing live 3 to 4 times a week in a concert setting.
I am sure he can go into a studio and make good music
I am not confident that he could sing in a concert setting right off the bat.
The JRNY door was wide open again and the band could have come together once again but of course Steve gave his speech he is not interested.
I have never seen a singer who has just given up on his career as I have with Steve Perry.
The last thing we have from him is I Stand Alone and that was years ago.
When you think of Steve Perry you think of Journey and thats it.
For whatever reason he wants no part of what has made him a success.
How can you explain that one?
How can you walk away from singing when you are a singer?
I can't think of any other singer who has done what Steve Perry has done.
I remember when I spoke to him on the phone on a Texas radio station and he all but yelled at me when I asked him why he was
playing around with another band instead of JRNY
He used the divorce Senerio with me and I understood that, but as you can see with just about every other band out there a reunion
has happened.
If Van Halen could do it how in gods name can Perry and JRNY not do it?
How can Steve let his legacy be ruined?
All of these copycat singers and he sits and does absolutly nothing.
It makes no sense at all.
Peace Lora
What Lora said, only....
There are so many things wrong your line of thinking, Froy. First off, Legacy is about the contribution you made. Certain folks have a legacy that is tied to their longevity. Fine. But Steve's legacy is the music that he created while he created that. That has only grown over the years. And there is no danger in that legacy being diminished. If you have to have new stuff by someone every other year in order to appreciate their contribution, than you no doubt love the fact that The Backstreet Boys came back to secure their legacy just recently.
The issue here is not whether or not he can sing live. That would be the issue only if you were holding tickets to his show in your hand, or if you were contemplating seeing his show. Funny, I pretty much think all of his studio albums are relevant and very much the issue. And those studio albums, studio help or not, still rise above most others.
Just because Journey opened the door does not mean you are entitled to a Journey reunion with your picks on each position. I pretty much think Steve is a big boy and can make such decisions based on what he feels is best for him at the moment. That you think he made the wrong decision is truly not the issue.
I’ve heard of many singers taking years between projects. I have heard of many singers retiring. Giving up on a career comes when you have tried and tried to make it and can’t seem to break through, so you quit. There is a huge difference on giving up versus retiring and relaxing.
He wants very much to be a part of what made him famous (and what he made famous). So he has, with obvious care, preserved that for the future. What he does not want to be a part of is future-state Journey. Um, not the only guy who feels that way about his past band. Why isn’t everyone sitting here talking about how Smith or Rolie don’t come back? Why can’t we please have a debate on why we must endure Fogerty and Credence Clearwater Revisited. And let’s be honest – who here can respect Rush without their original drummer? I know I lose sleep.
Best question of the post. “How can you walk away from singing when you are a singer?” All I can say is there must be a reason. And it’s none of our business.
I need to ask which Stock Market JRNY trades on. I’d like to know just how much money was lost by what Steve Perry did not provide you. Cause he sure seems to owe a lot of people here something. I just can’t figure out what or why. I seemed to have gotten everything I ever paid for. And I appreciate it for all that it is.
