Racism resides everywhere. I think we have made that point before. Rhi I agree, it is offensive to those of us who live in the south. I have met racists in Germany, California, Nevada, Colorado, Indiana, and Illinois. It isn't just a southern thing.

And honestly John, I find them offensive. And I don't normally cry offense, either. As you well know I've tolerated your opinions equally with everyone else's.

Sorry if my opinion offends. I'm quite cognizant the my opinion makes me public enemy number one with all southerners, and I'm okay with that. I'm not making any apologies for what I saw with my own two eyes. I can honestly say that it doesn't make me remotely happy to see the things I saw. As an American, it was all pretty disappointing. Also, racism exists EVERYWHERE. There are some racist people in Boston and there are some very open minded and tolerant people in the south. It just seems that racism seems to be a bit more prevalent and acceptable in some parts of our country.

There are still people who refer to my hometown of Boston as being racist, because of the busing situation more than 30 years ago. I don't lose any sleep over it, because the fact of the matter is that it happened!

Obviously my experience of living in the south won't change, as I lived it! I was simply making a point about a KKK retail store that exists in the south (I can assure you that I didn't put it there)!

Well, that we agree on. Honestly, I really shouldn't stereotype an an entire area. It was just REALLY astonishing to me to encounter soooooo many people who casually used the word "nigger". I have never come across that kind of talk in casual conversations, at the local barber shop. It was bizarre, and disappointing. I almost forgot what year it was. When I directly asked people I was comfortable with what the deal was with all the overt racism, every last one of them responded with "It's the south", which I guess doesn't disuede anyone from stereotyping!

Could be! LOL! How did you know my home town? I have also experianced racism in Vegas, I dealt with some skin heads on a regular basis. I think it depends on your city, and the folks there. I know there are some here. But the n word you speak of, has been spoken more by some of my African American friends than my white! LOL! It also depends on who you want to run with. So let me get this right... you can spew YOUR opinion that offends a certain group of people, yet offensive comments about another group of people get you on the defensive warpath of indignation...? So while you're trying to curb offensive comments in one breath, you're spewing them yourself in another?

Feel free to say "Oh hey, those *individuals* who run and shop from a KKK retail store sure are racist!" ...That's fair and accurate. But giving the impression that anything south of Pennsyltucky is populated with a bunch of ignorant, hating, white-hood adorning, lynch-mobbing, swaybacked, bucktoothed, Jesus-loving, swampbumpkins isn't necessary.

And I'm sorry, but I lived in the south most of my life, and I've traveled the country extensively as well, and with all due respect (really  )... YOU SAW WHAT YOU WANTED TO SEE.

First off...I never claimed that every southerner was racist, and I challenge you or anyone else to find a post where I've ever said any such thing. I did say that racism was FAR more prevalent in the south, than anywhere I have seen, and stand by that statement! I happened to live in an upscale neighborhood (when I lived in the south) that started a petition about a "black family" who was moving into the neighborhood, and this was 2007!

Rhiannon wrote: with all due respect (really  )... YOU SAW WHAT YOU WANTED TO SEE.

And with all due respect to you, that is a completely ridiculous statement, that intimates that I'm simply making up what I saw. Let me make a point that I think is worth making...I moved to the south, VOLUNTARILY! No job re-located me. I spent more than a half a million dollars on a home, so I was obviously committed to living there, and making it my new home. I can assure you that in spite of what you think, I didn't just feel like spending almost $20,000 to move to, and from North Carolina, within a one year time period, because I had nothing better to do with my money!

We'll just agree to disagree on this topic. You are obviously not a racist person, at all, and I never once suggested that you were! In the future, I'll do my best to pretend that no racism exists anywhere, and if I do make any comments, I'll be sure to say that racism is exactly the same, regardless of which part of the country or world a person happens to be in, to ensure that everyone has a warm and fuzzy feeling!

I've lived all of my life in Florida in different cities, but was born in South Georgia and have a lot of relatives there, some of the best people in the world, very warm and friendly. I did live in Atlanta for two years, which was a great city, but for my job I would go to smaller outlying counties all over Georgia. I was stunned at the racial slurs that were uttered publicly in a professional setting by highly educated people and it was accepted as natural, and they didn't know me from Adam. I had never had that happen in Florida in the same job.

Don't get me wrong, I believe racism is everywhere, but my experience has been that it's still more openly expressed in small southern towns. I was told when I lived in Atlanta, that they don't consider Florida the south. Now, I can't speak for the North. I can only compare Florida to Georgia. And I've gone to depositions in very small southern towns in Florida and never had it so openly expressed. Behind the scenes, I'm sure there's plenty, just like I'm sure there is everywhere.

I'll kick your ass, Seabass. That's not what I'm suggesting. I just want you to realize that perception isn't reality, and our realities are shaped strongly by how we were brought up and within what culture. So while a confederate flag on a car might be "racist" to you, realize that to the person in that car it isn't about hating minorities all the time (although it is indicative of someone who is typically closed-minded and judgemental... so I'll give you that), it's (here it comes) about heritage. Now, the KKK bullshit, I agree with you on... we've had that discussion before.

But if it was as bad as you say it is... the areas down there would be horrible... unlivable... unsafe. And they are just the opposite. Except for a few urban areas. As typical everywhere else. And no offense, but whatever neighborhood you lived in (was it in Mecklenberg, Cabarrus, or Iredell out of curiosity?) was chock full of assholes. But, I've seen people do the exact same thing in an upscale community here when a poor Polish man and his wife tried to buy a house.

We cool, Ulysses?

I don't like bigots at all, but closet bigots are just as disturbing. These are the folks that would say that racism is bad, yet in certain circles tell the most stereotypical, racist jokes you have ever heard! They also pretend to like people of other races, in order to save face in public, but hate them behind their backs. I have seen more of that going on with some northern people I have met, also some people in the west were that way too. I still say it is a personal choice to be a bigot. Closet or out front. My friend feels more offended by the ones who are closet racist. He says you cannot know what they really feel, it is just an underlying nauseating feeling to meet them.

We'll once again agree to disagree, Rhi. I'll go along with religion, a chicken and biscuit joint every 8 feet, sweet tea, NASCAR, and grits as "heritage" and culture. The confederate flag is something very different, to most people!

This we agree on. The reality is that there are FAR more people moving to North Carolina than are moving to many other parts of the country. Is it "livable"? I guess, that for some, it is very livable. I obviously didn't share that sentiment. I certainly don't think that crime was anything out of the ordinary from most other parts of the country.

You're close. I lived in Union County...about 20 miles from downtown Charlotte.

No flippin' wonder! Monroe is notorious for it's assholes. You should've moved to Lake Norman. Huntersville would've been a perfect fit for you.

Good. Now pardon me while I go watch "Smokey and the Bandit" and whistle "Dixie" to my little hillbilly heart's content.

I was born in the southwestern part of Virginia... but I've spent a major portion of my life in North Carolina and Tennessee. I also lived in Kentucky, West Virginia, and South Carolina for a short while, too.

I now live in the Chicago metro.

That is cool! I was raised here, moved a great deal through the years and returned here so my children would know their family. We can also own our own house and land here. Cost of living is lower, but so is income. :(

Seems to me that this is bordering on the old debate about 'White Pride' vs. Racism....

Is someone who is Pro-white......anti-black?

Is someone who likes apples....anti-orange? May sound juvenile, but it is basically the same thing.

Is someone who is a fan of SMFP....anti-Augeri?

I just think this whole topic is overblown, in general.....When one's own love for his/her race is miscontrued as hatred for another...we got issues, bunky.

And just so I'M clear.....in this day and age - whomever is STILL racist, is ignorant. Plain and simple.

My grandfather used to spew out this 'gem': 'Me? Do I have a problem with blacks? Nope, I think everyone should own one'

That's what *I* had to listen to growing up. Myself? I'm not one iota racist.

I just don't like things like this, and NEVER will:
