I don't know but I don't care. Just get the guy out on the road so I can see him already.

Make it the Perry/Manilow tour for all I care!! (nice ring to it, eh?)

If he sang it in the same octave as Manilow, certainly.

Hit high notes that only the dogs can hear? Probably not. Sing and sound fabulous at 60? Hell yeah.

I'd rather see him tour with someone like Jimmy Barnes or Sammy Hagar, or else do something seriously different from the past, like some smokey blues or hard core Motown. No disrespect to Manilow or his fans, but he's pretty vanilla, which works for him. SMF'P is always much better when he spices it up.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

We're just spoiled. That sounds exactly like Manilow singing anything he sings. I thought he did it very well.

Exactly. Maybe he can sing it better but until he ends his Tibetan monk existence, we won't know. All I know is Barry is still going strong, and not hung up on sounding like himself from 20 years ago.

I don't know how you can say his voice is shot. I think he sounds great.

I like Barry's music but there are just some songs that should not be redone by someone else and this is one of them. Bohemian Rhapsody is another one. 8)

Bohemian Rhapsody is up there with Stairway To Heaven, Satisfaction and All Along The Watchtower in my books. Any of those should be untouchable.

God I hate to say this, but... I kinda thought it was appropriate. Manilow does it justice in a Barry kind of way, and it fits in fine with any of his hits from the 70's. Honestly, Manilow is perfect for this kind of song. This is the song that put Journey over the top, and part of the reason was because it had appeal to people who might not normally listen to a rock record. I've got a feeling there's a lot of Manilow fans with Escape in their collection.

Really i didnt think it was bad for him at 62 . You cant compare it to Perry at 30 something.Perry would butcher that song right now, unless he did it an octave lower, and it would sound like Madge from All in the family

Barry has had three number one singles and been selling out his shows for 3 years straight in Vegas. Dude is 65 and still out there performing (unlike a certain person to remain nameless). I give the guy major props for not abandoning his fans and still putting a product out there for his loons to enjoy. It beats playing the same 10 records over and over again.

But, Gunbot, you're talking about 2 different personalities here. Obviously, one enjoys the limelight, the other doesn't. Barry Manilow has been around a long time (40 yrs or so). I used to love all his songs (bought his Ultimate song collection cd). But, you see him now all over the place, with his plastic face and hair, and it's downright creepy. True, his voice seems to be intact, but a 65-yr old Manilow swinging and gyrating to the beat is just a little embarrassing. Kind of like SP once said he didn't want to be a caricature of himself.

Of course, there are many other favorite old singers still performing with energy and dignity (Paul Mac and Tony Bennett, for instance) -- just not Barry (imo).

I'm actually thinking about going to Vegas for the de la Hoya/Pacquiao fight and seeing a Manilow show. I'm still pissed that I missed Calzaghe/Jones, Jr.

Thank God for a sane reply. I think SJ had one too.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this. Manilow does this song very well...in his own way. It's lower, rearranged, whatevered. Who cares. It's not horrible or awful or any of that. It's played well. It's sung well. It's just Manilow.

I guarantee you, more life long Manilow fans have Journey's GH, than do the rock crowd.

But I do also kinda agree with Andrew that this song should probably retire.

Agree. He just added his own style as he always does. I've been a fan of his for eons and have seen him live a bunch of times (not recently though). He puts on a great show. He doesn't elevate the song to the heights SP did, but no one could. "Open Arms" will never be one of my favorite J songs but to many in the mainstream music audience, it is the ultimate J song and I think he did it justice.

And that's why covering a Journey song is a recipe for groans and criticism. You hear a Journey song, you expect it to come off a certain way, but no one can hit Perry-level. Barry did it the Barry way, and that's ok... that is all one can expect of him... if people are expecting to hit that link and hear the over-the-moon Perry style, it ain't gonna happen.
