AOTW - Symphony X "The Odyssey"

I'm still with Shadow Gallery - Room V. I especially like the second part of Room V; it's a bit darker and heavier.
I can't believe I let Tyranny stay on the shelf for so long... but now I have two excellent albums to listen to. :)

Ra-Duality. Very catchy modern rock with a vocalist that sounds like a cross between Sting and Chris Cornell. I dig it very much.

I've listened to Room V a bit too lately S-Dip. I like it...i heard the first Shadow Gallery cd when it first came out and hated Mike Baker's voice and pretty much snubbed them ever since up until this release. Might have to go and get Tyranny now.

That one's on my to-buy list. One of the very very few modern rock bands that can boast about having a good vocalist.

I don't mind his overall voice... but he does do kind of a 'sob' thing with his voice sometimes, I can imagine that might be a turn off; as a matter of fact, if he'd stop doing that I wouldn't miss it either.

I have never heard their first one even; I started with Carved In Stone and liked it so much I always took that CD to play. I might have to go and start listen to Legacy and their first one!

I'm still recovering from last week's 'Rock Never Stops' concert. Haven't used the stereo since.

So I'm gonna randomly pick Robin Beck "Do You Miss me" as my AOTW. However, it's not that good of an album. It's her best 'AOR' effort-to-date, that much is true. But to compare it as the next 'Trouble Or Nothing' is obsurd.

Unfortunately for her, Robin Beck was outperformed by another female rock band who released an album on the same week. It is called Broke N Blue "The Waiting."

I don't have an album of the week.... Been to busy listening to new urchases and work... So far I've listened to Lee Aaron's 2 Preciious (yes, that double i is intentional) on the road, and my new purchases (Accept and Queen).

Dream Theater - Octavarium. I love the opening song and Panic Attack, even though it has very Muse like vocal melodies... but the riffing is so great, and the keyboards are almost like those of a Black Metal band! Those songs resemble most what they did on Train Of Thought, according to a review I read. Need to give that one another try, I guess...

Not sure about this one yet.....I heard that it was more 'song based' but as yet I am unconvinced. And I'm kind of over songs like 'Sacfriced sons'......if you know what I mean.

Yeah, my thoughts as well... That song would have been better had it been an instrumental.

Octavarium is indeed more songbased IMO. The first time I listened to it, I noticed that it sounded very accessible. There were hooklines, and choruses! Interesting musical things seem to happen as well, but since I'm not a musician most of that stuff goes past me unfortunately...

I had three new titles to choose from for this week's AOTW. And here's how they stacked up:

3rd Place: Starbreaker "S/T." A melodic metal album that has been grossly overhyped. At best, it is an unpolished poor-man's Masterplan. Tony Harnell should stick to TNT or Westworld, and leave heavy metal to the pro (Jorn Lande.)

2nd Place: Ra "Duality." Unless Evanescence gets their album out before 2006, this will be my Nu-Breed of the year. No standout tracks like in "From One," but it's an overall solid album with plenty of hooks and vocal harmonies. Even 80's Purists should find something to like in this album. The only major weakness of "Duality" are the fairly weak verses.

1st Place, and AOTW, goes to Leaves' Eyes "Vinland Saga." I've given up believing they will go growless, afterall, I didn't realize the singer is married to the growler. As far as untainted non-commercialized pure gothic metal goes, I think Leaves' Eyes are the best at what they do. Great vocals, memorable songs, and a growler who sits in the background where he can't annoy you so much.

BTW, I forgot to say that I miss you mate!!
When I travel to Perth in September, no Jon to go and see.

M AOTW this week is shaping up as.....'Momentary Lapse of reason' - Floyd. I haven't listened to it for the best part of two years, and it really is very good.

After reading a glowing reveiw by Tali, I went and purchase Biomechaincal's "Empires Of The Worlds". Thanks for putting me on this great band, Tali. Plan to try find their first cd.

Good one doggy...the first cd is cool...not as heavy and the production is not as good (no Andy Sneap mix either)...but still worth getting if you can find it at a reasonable price.

My AOW is Mahavishnvu Orchestra-Inner Mounting Flame. Just some of the most badass fusion playing of all time...amazing band, especially John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham.

I think you're liking that because you think you should like it. I used to have drum lessons from this cat who loved the band, and I really didn't see it.....then again, I was a 23 year old space cadet then.....literally.

Kenny...that sounds like an accusation of being some sort of musical poseur...fuck you
I like it because its filled with killer musicians playing killer music...i'd probably like it even more if i was still a space cadet
Its just good jazz(kind of) with heaps of balls...and for 1971 there weren't many people who could touch these guys abilities....not that that really matters. I dig it...the music takes me somewhere.

Oh I know mate.....it's good sometimes to see if I can press your buttons though!!

You're right you know - it would be fuckin' unreal to listen to on some really good pot......you know the stuff I mean, not the stuff that's so strong you sit around drooling for an hour, but the stuff that gives you insight.......it's just that, at the time, I was into different shit.

I mean, I was so stoned, I turned down a ticket to Floyd's 'Delicate Sound of Thunder' tour!!!  What a fucking space cadet.

Oh, that sucks, that your 'space traveling' career made you miss that concert. :(

My AOTW is Dream Evil - Dragon Slayer. Lots of dragons need to be slain; in just about every song one turns up! Good thing they are also fierce warriors with sharpened swords and swinging axes, otherwise they wouldn't have lived to tell the tale on this album. Musically it's very melodic heavy metal btw.

Where is everybody anyway? Hello? (echo...echo...echo...)

My AOTW this week goes to Starbreaker "S/T." I called it a poor-man's Masterplan last week...but even a poor man's Masterplan is still a pretty damn good album, now that I have listened to it multiple times. The one track that keeps getting spins is "Lies." What a crackin' tune! In a 2005 year that has been overall, fairly weak for music, 'Lies' has a good chance of being my song of the year.

Well, I am early this week!!! I have already found my AOTW. I have been tremendously enjoying Circle II Circle - Watching In Silence.

That song 'Lies' from Starbreaker is a very good song indeed, it's my favourite track off that album as well.
