Yeah, that's the same ole Fred...gracing us with his presence!

Now, it's also very possible that his voice was hoarse from all the yelling he may have done at the game, which would also explain why his voice sounded the way it did.
THANK YOU

What yelling?
As Deano stated, Perry is notoriously afraid of publicity, why on earth would he draw more attention to himself by screaming in the stands?

Because he was having a good time at a ball game?

You're full of turtle shit.
I saw him on the news.
He was seated and watching the game.
There was no screaming or in general, rowdy behavior.
The lengths to which you people will stoop to justify's Perry's ruined voice is amazing.

Whenever the camera panned over to him, he stopped yelling and just sat there, hoping against hope that no one would notice him. As soon as the camera moved away, he began rooting for the team again at the top of his lungs! It's very simple really.![]()
Truth is we all know that Perry's voice isn't what it used to be and that he certainly does not have the same high end that he used to have (in my opinion). However, I cannot imagine anyone flying to Chicago to watch a world series match only to wind up sitting there during the game. It would seem to me that would draw more attention than getting caught up in it.
Another consideration is the microphone that was being used. I'm sure it (or the entire sound system for that matter) was not of the quality that is used for singing in stadiums. In the early days of Journey, Steve favored a Sennheiser (one of the best at the time) with full mixed sound, including reverb. While the mic he was using at the celebration was great for announcing and speaking, the mix was certainly not geared for singing. Imagine how much different he would have sounded if there had been the proper amounts of reverb, as well as highs-midtones-lows in the mix? I'm not saying that it would have been the old Steve Perry who easily hit the notes for "Lay It Down," but he would have sounded much richer than he did. My wife and I just saw Journey a few weeks ago, and you could hear them for what seemed to be at least half a mile away (or more) because of the sound system that was in use. I doubt that you could hear Perry for that distance.
But the bottom line is this...Perry is comfortable enough not to give a rat's rear end what anyone else thinks about his voice and you have to give the man credit for that!

Kaj wrote:Give it up folks,or will you still be discussing this in 2030?
Perry was a member of the band for 2 decades
and was a part of creating the most classic tunes to be ever recorded
be happy about that instead of throwing some really "low" comments on a hero that has stepped down from the stage.
