Essential

Postby BlackWall » Thu Dec 01, 2005 2:36 am

Hey.. This is my first time posting on the Journey board, I'm usually over on Styx.. Anyway, I just picked up "Essential Journey", and outside of the biggest hits, I'm not really that familiar with the band, can anyone help as to some of the other tracks I should check out? I'm also wondering if there are any key tracks that aren't on this collection at all? I know about "Stay A While", are there others? I've always liked Journey decently, I even saw them back in 2001, but I've just never really explored their releases too much.

Don't buy any of their new material or you may give up on them. Get the dvd, Greatest Hits Live and their Escape dvd and enjoy the ride. Classic Journey rules!

The Time3 box set is a great purchase. But the collection you have is pretty good. Of course, you MUST buy a copy of the new CD, Generations.

Why you so threatened by someone giving the new music a chance, HOTS? Let the guy decide for himself.

As an objective Journey fan I recommend you stay away from the Time3 box set. I think alot of it is too obscure and inaccesible to a new listener.
For starters, I say get "Frontiers" (must own-this is the definitive melodic rock masterpiece), "Arrival", and then either, Infinity or Evolution.

Doesn't Essentials cover most of that though? Of course, so does the Time3 Box set, but I believe the obscure stuff like little girl or natural thing wouldn't turn any new Journey listener off.

Time3 has some live stuff on it, though, which is nice to have. :)

Then I am one of the few exceptions to that rule. I was barely a casual fan until that box set came out in '92 and then I was GONE. The appetite became insatiable.

I have Times 3 and Generations, but don't have Essential yet.

I like the live stuff on Times 3, as well as most of Generations.

Get Captured. It's live, it rocks, it covers more of the early Perry years.

Buy whatever it is you want. It's all very good. I like "live" cause you know if it was released live, then more than like Mr. P was satisfied with his performance and so will you.

Thanks for all the insight, I will definitely check into some of those albums. I have a friend that has the set, and I remember really being surprised by some of their earlier recordings.

How do the majority of fans feel about the hit "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'? That one has always been one of my favorites, along with "Wheel In The Sky".

Always loved the songs, but I am getting kind of tired of the 'old standards'. For a while, that is all Journey was playing in concert. And they ALWAYS seem to end with LTS. It was getting rather predictable. But this year they really spiced up the set list giving something for everyone. They still ended with LTS though... I still love those hits, but I would love to hear more "new" music in concert. Otherwise, the show is getting repetitive.

Why buy Essential Journey? Hell, buy the Box set for about 10 bucks more, or buy the Journey Continues..You get Remember me there.

DON'T buy GH Live..sucks...Oh the music is awesome, but it's supposed to be live, and it sounds like Perry in a bathroom full of crickets..

DO not listen to Heads...ANY of them. They have a little 666 printed on the back of their domes...they are here to push.....the past...

DO get Generations...
DO get Arrival
DO get Escape/Frontiers
DO get Infinity/Evolution/Departure--you can get all of these together..
DO get Captured like Dave28 said..

DONT get Raised on Radio
DONT get any Perry solo shit

Consider Trial by Fire if you want to make love to your wife by candlelight..put on track 8 and let it repeat

Ask Cubby whether or not you should get the first three CD's....

NO NO NO. Raised on Radio is a decent pop album, but is POISONED. DUDE, shake yourself. That CD crippled Journey for 10 years.

If I don't beat this cancer, I want to sign up for "Make a wish foundation."

The only problem I have is choosing playing live onstage with Neal in concert, or-- sleeping with Lindsay M., this fine little Canadian filly.

Blackwall, Essential has it all. If you want to get more into the music though, I'd say get Escape and Frontiers. There are some things on the Time3 box set that you won't find anywhere else, but that would be for after you get hooked.

2 suggestions from my 2 cents worth, especially if you would like to listen to a couple of rockin' Journey tunes:

Listen to the songs Escape & Higher Places.

Journey at their best - definitely.

Journey On!

See, Liz gets it.....

However, I think Generations songs, Faith in the Heartland, The Place in your Heart BLOW away HP....

I KNOW Andrew gets hard listening to Out of Harms Way. He even said so in his review.

As GREAT as those songs are, Higher Place trumps them.
HP is one of Journey's best songs, if not possibly thee best.

Higher Place is in my top 3 Journey songs ever.

Out of those three, "Believe" is easily the most turd like.
