Listening To Red13:

Postby Red13JoePa » Sun Jul 02, 2006 1:20 am

Topic change, God forbid  before it inevitably becomes about tapegate, who knows who Walking Away From The Edge was written about? And if you know, was it drugs and/or alcohol? I've been tough on this song before, but it is a major departure from the power ballad formula (which still works amazingly, no doubt, evidenced by Knowing That You Love Me). It's actually really growing on me. The Time it ain't but I can get into the ass-kickingness of that tune later.

I love that tune. It kinda reminds me of "Livin' to Do" from "Arrival", which is also very good (and the highlight of the "Arrival" tour, in my opinion). Considering the guys wrote "Never too Late" for Deen, perhaps this was written for him as well while he was still struggling with the demons in his mind.

Jon Cain told me it was written for Greg Allman.

I also remember reading about this song being co-written by Geoff Tate of Queensryche and looks like it was the first track that Augeri recorded with Journey...Something like in the first week after he got in the band.

Appreciate it, Memorex. 8)
WAFTE definately has its merits. It is a lot like Living To Do off Arrival, another non-power ballad with major blues tinge (one of SA's strong singing points IMO). Not to get off -topic, but Cain at the end of LTD.....WOW. Maybe his finest hour, on an organ no less. Perfect channeling of Greg Rolie.

Ok...what part of Jon Cain told me, to my face, it was about Greg Allman did everyone miss? ;)

Dean does it take it to heart though. It's his theme song, along with Never Too Late.

Red 13 has some great moments, I wish they would have continued in that direction.

The Time has Neal Schon's most menacing guitars ever. The lead, the rythm and the fills all spectacular while being dirty, tough and gritty. One of my favorite dirty aggressive riffs is the part right after "Sit in a sun shower, after all it's only rain..." Neal's axe: BBBBBRRRRRRR
NNNNNNNRRRRR NNNNNNNRRRRRRR
NNNNNNNRRRRRRRR
Love it.

Not that I care, because I really dont,

But according to certain people in the business, it was a song written by Geoff Tate/ Jack Blades
Neal Schon was receiving alot of help from Blades at one point, this was one of the songs he presented to Journey, the band dedicated this song about the use of Deen Castronovos past drug abuse, and near fatal overdose.

(Note) this is 2nd hand info and I have no proof of this...

you shoulda talked to Jon Cain to confirm it...

j/k - I'm not jumping on you about this, Distant. I find it funny when people say this band member told me...

As Herbie Herbert said in his recent interview, "no one read the credits anymore."

This is the way it's listed - (Cain/Schon/Pessis)

Unfortunately, alot of bands get songs, then change the lyric content a little, and somehow feel good about calling it their own, but I tend to believe this originated as a Tate/ Blades project.

I totally agree about changing and calling it their own. I hope that they gave credit financially to the other's though, if that's the case. No idea who Pessis is.

Re-Read what was posted by shania, I was just trying to answer her with information that was circulating by certain insiders closer to the band.

I don't think it's about Deen....woulda been a little too close to home maybe. I think like RVR said it's Alman or some no namer we don't know of.
