You've just been chosen as Journey's new manager. Let's assume this tour has ended. Who do you choose as your lead singer? Augeri or Soto? Do you try to entice Perry into a reunion tour? Do you give Chalfant a call? Do you hire someone to kick the shit out of Deano for exposing the truth? Do you seek a label? Try to cover all bases. This could be fun!! I await your ideas. Especially can't wait to hear Deano's!!!!!!!!!!

OK Deano dies a painful death as an infidel the the Holy Scarab way... ;) Just kidding...
I go with who has the pipes to do it...Right now that is Jeff...not that Kevin C. can't do it...but I think Jeff will allow them to become something bigger than they have been and is a better fit for the FUTURE. I would look beyond the Dirty Dozen + 3 or 4...they have been playing.

No label...they cost too much and exercise too much control...ala Arrival...I also get new management...

JSS is on right now. Maybe he could divulge some info. Doubtful though, because of legal implications.

The first thing I would do is hire that Geragos guy who defended that weasel in California and blame the entire taped vocals scandal on Satanists.

Note: These same Satanists would also be responsible for the sudden disappearance of Deano, after an unsuccessful attempt on Avatar's life while travelling through Europe.

I then hire Michael Bolton as the new lead singer and become a cheesy lounge act, opening for The Blue Man Group.

While that would be fun...the stage isn't big enough for Perry's ego and three other singers...

JSS, hands down...

Do you try to entice Perry into a reunion tour?

Nope, he seems to be happy out of the limelight...

Do you give Chalfant a call?

Sure, just to say "hi". Kev seems like a nice guy...

Do you hire someone to kick the shit out of Deano for exposing the truth?

Nope, just pat him on the back and say "thanks, man"...

Do you seek a label?

Would be nice, to get the band back in the game...

If I was manager, I would first and foremost get the straight story on Augeri and his vocal condition. He is my first choice for a singer and if he can get back to 2001 status, great. If he needs a year off, we take a year off. No more than that, however. Neal would go insane.

No Perry. He doesn't want to and I don't want him to, either. He can do his own thing.

Seek a label? Of course! This is Journey, they definitely need a label. They're not some indie band on the Fuse channel trying to make it big. With proper label backing they could do another album... nothing half-assed anymore, though... if they don't have the label right behind them and surefire promotion all set up, they can keep writing on Garage Band until it happens for all I care.

Then they tour to promote said album and for the love of God, maybe actually TALK about the album during the show... I remember on the Generations tour they just said things like, "Here's a new song, everyone" and launched into TPIYH. They needed to take a couple of minutes to say "We have a new album called Generations and you all got a copy at the door... it's coming out in _____ with bonus tracks so please check it out... here's the first single, it's out on the radio right now..."

And maybe hire someone to give Dean a little bit of a kick...

Call me, Journey.

First thing they need is a record label. Of course, it's likely noone signs them unless they know what the singer situation is like.

If it's me, I sit down with Augeri and honestly tell him what I'm thinking about, which is an album and tour with Perry and Augeri both on board. Augeri plays guitar when he ain't singing, Perry sings backup/co-lead when Augeri's singing lead. My idea is a 10 track album, 4 Perry sung, 2 Deen, 3 Augeri, 1 with all three trading off.

If Augeri's on board and can go, I call Perry. If Augeri refuses, I say okay, let me get back to you in a week and I call Perry.

This is of course if the guys (meaning Schon Cain and Valory...and I mean ALL THREE) are cool with ANY of this. Let's presume they all are.

I call Perry. Float the idea of him coming back into the fold for an album and tour. For me, this is the Steve Perry last chance tour, if he bails, it's over with him. If he's up for the split vocal duties, I go back to Augeri and try to get him on board for it. I think he'd do it. If he doesn't, then I call Perry and offer him the full gig, album and tour, come back, all is forgiven mutually, and we go from there.

I think sound-wise, on stage, this band would sound absolutely amazing with three vocalists pitching in. Layers of sound...I love it. And it'd make Perry sound worlds better because let's face it, he's gonna need help. No tuning down, that's rule #1. Play this shit as it's meant to be played.

Now, if Augeri refuses the split duty, and Perry turns down the full gig, I go back to Augeri and offer him the full gig. Let's presume he's not nuts and takes it. That's that if that's the case. Album and tour like normal. Much heavier promotion than in recent years though.

But in an ideal world everyone plays ball. Go into the studio, record the album, and I want a perfectionist producer in there. Get Mutt Lange on the phone...I want perfection regardless of how long it takes.

Release the album Spring Break week of 2008. Just in time for a summertime hit. First single is the track with the tradeoff vocals. Let everyone know up front what Journey is NOW. No bullshit, no illusions, no smoke and mirrors. These guys fucking rock, here it is.

For the tour. Go easy...don't kill these guys. 20 city US stadium and large arena tour. Start in San Francisco, late July. SBC Park. I guarantee a sellout.

Setlist? Here goes...

New track (tradeoff vocals - the single)
Be Good to Yourself (SA vocals)
I'll Be Alright Without You (SP vocals)
Separate Ways (SP)
Still They Ride (SP/D)
New Track (SA)
New Track (SP)
Who's Cryin' Now (SP)
Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' (SP)
Lights (SP)
Stay Awhile (SP)
Faith in the Heartland (SA)
Oh Sherrie (SP)
When You Love A Woman (SP)
Open Arms (SP)
Wheel in the Sky (SA/SP)

Encores
Any Way You Want It (SA/SP)
Faithfully (SP/SA/DC)
Don't Stop Believin' (SP/SA/DC)

The onstage interplay between these guys is gonna have to be tight, and look natural. If that doesn't work, this isn't gonna work at all. Perry's a master showman, and Augeri's a trooper and a good guy, I think it'd be great.

The important thing here, to me, is getting that cash flow going so the tour keeps chugging along. Noone complains when they're making money. There's plenty of backup, vocally. If Perry can't handle the load, Augeri's more than ready, if he can't Deen, and vice versa up the line.

If the 20 city tour works, which is all I sign Perry for to start with, is that...then we negotiate to extend it from there. The key is to get Perry on board that this is gonna make him a LOT of money, for a little work. 20 dates is nothing. Spread the dates out too...weeks in between legs. Here, lemme do that too!

7/19 San Francisco
7/23 Los Angeles
7/29 San Diego
8/4 Denver
8/11 Houston
8/15 Dallas
8/19 New Orleans
8/23 Atlanta
8/26 Miami
8/30 DC
9/3 New York City
9/5 New York City
9/7 Philadelphia
9/11 Toronto
9/15 Chicago
9/17 Chicago
9/22 Detroit
9/26 Minneapolis
10/1 Seattle
10/5 Portland

If Perry declines to go any further after that, fine, say thanks, nice working with you again, close it positively with an open door for the next album/tour, and move forward with Augeri for a small international tour of arenas. Another 20 worldwide dates, a few in the US, then call it finished for promoting that album.

Now, early in the tour, on the heels of the successful first single, I'm releasing one of the new SP sung tracks as the next single. Mid tour, around late August, a live version of FITH is the single there, with the Deen track off the album as its B-side.

From here, the sky's the limit. You've got a sold out tour, what I think would be a platinum album at least, and at least two hit singles. Journey's back on the map.

Of course all of this needs two things. Support from a major label, and Steve Perry on board.

Incidentally...I didnt really have any plans here for JSS...because we dont even know if he's official. I'm going from the facts I've been told as far as who the official band lineup is. If JSS is official, then...I dunno. I don't think I keep him on for a Perry tour. Maybe. I haven't thought about that really.

I think Perry would have return to Journey only for a big Farewell Tour, but my idea is that Augeri returns obviously in good vocal conditions. I suggest that Journey release a live DVD with JSS in gratitude of his services and so that it causes impact between fans and it can be a good business

way too complicated...the fans would be too confused!!! it might work for three shows... but a long term tour--no way this would work...

The correct version for a one off Journey extravaganza.....If you did this in the correct way... you could start out a three and 1/2 hour set list with Journey playing Augeri tunes of Arrival/RED 13 Generations.. then go to pre Perry stuff with Rolie in the middle---and then end with Perry and the dirty dozen.. maybe switch the early stuff to go first...

How would the fans be confused? There are two lead singers. They weren't confused when it was Perry and Rolie...they wouldn't be now.

Nobody's confused at a Kiss concert when there's up to 4 guys singing lead.

Addendum to my idea because I didnt elaborate on what I want for promotions. I dont have price tags for these, but they'll cost money, so the label needs to commit big time.

I want one of the tracks from the album, a Deen or Augie vocaled one, to have a rock edge and be released as a single to AOR.

Then the tradeoff vocal main single to Adult Contemporary and Classic Rock stations that'll play it.

Another track, a ballad, to easy listening, Lite format

I want prime time national TV spots promoting the album and tour on network...preferably CBS.

Appearances on Leno and Letterman and wherever else will have them.

Lend out the tracks for use in some of the hit TV shows that run heavy on music...the WB shows are kinda like this.

You put a lot of thought into that Big J and I commend you.
But why would FITH live be a single? There is absolutley no point to that that I can see.

OK, so August 4, 2008 Denver, Co....I'll reserve my tix now please!! :D

Same here Big J...but Instead of FITH being taken out...I'd take Oh Sherrie and put in another ACTUALL Journey tune. I don't see why Perry should have a solo tune on here if you can fit another true Journey song in there. EDGE OF THE BLADE FOR THIS TOUR TOO. (I know I know...I said I'd shut up about this song.LOL) My .02 :-)

I'll be there 8/11 Houston and 8/15 Dallas. :-)

I guess you have to be in my head to hear the interplay on these songs.

Faith in the Heartland as a single because nobody's heard it. The thing that irritates me about these tours like this is that everything's a rehash. Live singles are old songs that everyone's heard 1000 times/1000 ways. This is different.

Not only that, my idea here, is that I want, badly, must have, Perry giving Augeri the rub here anytime and anywhere possible. I want Perry soundbites saying Augeri saw to it that the journey continued and thanking him for being a part of this. WHY? Because Perry, ultimately, leaves again. You know it, I know it, that's why I only sign him for 20 shows. With Perry officially and in his own words passing the torch to Augeri, the band has life again after Perry leaves (again).

As for Oh Sherrie, consider it dangling a bone for Perry. Knowing his rep, he's about himself. It's "his music" this, "my music" that. Great, here you go. We play Oh Sherrie, AND we play FITH. Even trade.

While I don't agree with everything in your post, I must say that the time and thought you put into it really made it enjoyable to read. My DREAM would be everything you mentioned, just with Perry and Perry alone. The way you structured the dates would allow him plenty of rest and I think he could pull it off IF he really wanted to. Great post...one of the finest I've ever seen.
