I think it's the latter. Augeri didn't have the range of Steve Perry, but was forced to try to manufacture it. Try going out to three karaoke bars this week and sing "Open Arms", "Don't Stop Believin'", and "Faithfully" each night. Then multiply that by 300 gigs of 25+/- songs per gig and you will understand how Augeri shredded his vocal chords.
Steve Perry is the wise one. He wouldn't do it, no matter how much pressure was on him to do so. He knew the toll it would take. Personally, I'm glad he didn't shred his voice completely. The man deserves to live out the rest of his life however he wants to. He paid his dues to the music world already, and I will be forever grateful for his additions to my CD collection. They are priceless.
Fortunately I got to see Journey with Steve Perry in the 80's. I'll never forget it. The moment Steve started singing "Lights" to start the show, it sent chills up my spine. I've never had an experience quite like that at any concert before or after that one, and I've been to hundreds of great rock shows. Steve Perry will always be a rock god to me. My wife adores him too. Journey is Steve Perry and Neal Schon. Anything else is simply an impersonation... kind of like Elvis impersonators. There will never be another Elvis, and likewise, no one else can wear Steve Perry's shoes either.
Don't get me wrong. I still love Journey, in whatever form it comes in. I've seen Journey with Steve Augeri three times. However, the last time I saw them, Augeri's voice gave out halfway through the show. My wife and I couldn't stand hearing all of our favorite songs sang out of key, so we left. I haven't seen Journey with JSS yet, but I say "More power to them!". Keep the dream alive. I would listen to Neal, Jon, Ross, and Deen without any singer at all.
The magic of Journey will live on forever!
Peace!
