Unfortunately I only heard 1 song viw youtube.com, Separate Ways, and I must say I'm very impressed positively with JSS voice. He rocked the place.
As for Perry bootlegs , I heard a lot where his voice was the best I ever heard and others where he wasn't on at all. But I must admit his voice between 1978 and 1983 was my favorite one and I didn't like the change of pitch he had faced during Frontiers and worse ROR.
Cheers

maybe it's just me but i doubt it. there's more to a live show then just the singing. }:C) jss can sing but i like his energy... to ask for him to just stand there & croon is like asking the sun to set in the morning & rise at night. i love journey & i think they ROCK live! it can only go up from here! }:C)) i'm sure jss is working everyday to keep his voice healthy & strong... if he's having problems hitting certain notes i'm sure he'll work it out. whateva... i thought the boot sounded really good. iffy here & there but like someone else said if you want flawless listen to a cd. i love all the realness of a live show... LOVE it when the singer forgets words! it's all about having fun & losing yourself for a few hours. thanks jeff! you are breathing new life into journey... i sound like a broken record... but it's the truth! }=C))

Dead on! A lot of peoiple are forgetting what a "Concert" should be - Fun, Exciting, SPONTANEOUS at times... If you want to hear exact, perfect duplicates of an album, why go? Stay at home and play your cds/albums/cassettes/8tracks :) Jeff isn't gonna hit every not e when he's prowling around the stage like he does; guess what, Perry wasn't dead on everynight either but he was an AWESOME performer. Jeff is brining that excitement and fun back to the shows.

Whoever said they wanted to hear exact perfect duplicates of CDs? It sure wasn't me. Of course Perry wasn't DEAD on every single night with Journey, but most of the time he WAS, or pretty damn fucking close to it. When I hear another boot of JSS, other than the ones I've already heard, and he can hit the notes on a consistant basis, then I'll change my mind. If they ever get out to my neck of the woods again, I'll go see them! So far that's not looking promising :( . I agree that they need to change the entire setlist to accomodate his vocal range so this won't even be an issue. Dean's voice, only singing the 2 or 3 songs a night, plus the back-up vox, seems to be taking it's toll on him already.

YUP! LOWER THE KEYS! JSS cannot hit these notes consistantly. I'm not sure what you guys think is a great vocal performance, but this boot isn't it. It's better than the other two by far, but he's struggling to hit the notes. You can hear it. Again, put on "Keep on Runnin" and listen to how flat he is on the "It's Okay" parts. They're terribly flat. Awful. If I saw that live, I'd be pissed, especially from Journey.

For a vocalist hitting the pitch- an approximation is and abomination. There are spots on this boot where JSS shines, but those are on the lower key songs. DOA isn't a hard song to sing, neither is Chain Reaction. Separate ways is pretty tough and he doesn't do it here. Listen with headphones. It's not that good at all. If Journey would lower the keys to their songs, they'd have it nailed. JSS could do the gig AND there'd be a passionate frontman. While the songs are in their original keys, you only get half of what you should.

Ah! This helps to make sense of things. I had asked what show it was. 3rd in a row would explain the roughness, though not necessarily the pitch problems.
I'd LOVE to hear a first or second night. My second nights are usually better than my first.
Jeff, WHY doesn't the band help by lowering the song keys? I don't get that. I have faith that this could be a good fit (believe it or not) but the band really NEEDS to start accommodating their vocalists more.

The BAND does. TOTALLY. Jeff sounds tired and like he can't hit the pitches to me. He's got energy and power, but doesn't have the range and some of the pitches I'm hearing are WAY off the mark.

Except for the part where Perry goes off into the stratosphere. :) Other than that, it's a "low" range tune for Perry, which means anyone with a decent voice could do it.

YES. The stratosphere part is headvoice. not that difficult for anyone that's a decent singer. (Which Jeff undoubtably is).

"Dude are your ears shot? JSS does a VERY VERY good job covering the songs. "

"Amen ! I am a fan of the Perry era, and JSS does justice to the songs !
Yikes Aaron, you are not getting it. JSS brings a new vibe to the whole thing..."

I'm with Aaron (though he's a bit harsh). The band might sound pumped, but the vocals (at least on the boots I've heard) are not great in many spots. Also, the show is a bit over an hour. For Cain to have to throw in a solo to give the singer's voice a rest with such a short set is an indicator of bad things ahead. Dang, Jeff, take care of your voice man. I hope that you can save your throat. Get a hold of Mark Baxter, Jaime Venderra, or any of the other coaches out there. They can help you with the load.

Sorry for multiple posts, I was trying to clean them up but forgot who said what...

This Marysville show was night #3 in a row for Jeff. I think he sounds a bit worn in the boot. I saw him Saturday at Shoreline and he was good, but not as strong as Vegas where he blew me away. Vegas was definitely one of the best Journey shows I've ever seen, but different. And yes, I saw shows with SP and many more with SA.

As a sidebar, it's funny how so many of the posters here don't want you to listen to the boots of JSS to make a judgement, yet that is all they used to crucify Augeri.

But, I do recommend that everyone see Jeff at least once. He deserves it.

I thought the Shoreline show was better than Vegas. I've been pretty much blown away by each of the shows I've seen. I was most certainly not looking forward the same old same old. As far as those critical of boots, JSS, and Augeri.... well, it was the use of the same vocal track where Augeri is concerned and something completely different for Jeff. I happen to like the Marysville boot, whether or not it does Jeff justice is not so important for me, I've been to a show.

Good observation regarding the boots. Was Vegas the first show after the break?
Regarding the Auger boot thing, it was used to show that he was using tapes, but other boots were used to show that he couldn't cut it. I've heard Augeri boots that blew me away and I've seen him a few years ago. I haven't heard a Journey/JSS boot yet that has left me thinking that he's the right choice and I've not seen them with Jss. I won't be seeing them this tour.

As jrnyman28 said, Red Rocks was the first show after the break and the next day Salt Lake City, but then a two day rest before the Vegas show. I think for any good singer, a couple of days rest always helps. For me, Shoreline lacked the energy of Vegas. Sorry you won't get to see Jeff for yourself. As I said, I think everyone should. Jeff brings something different to the band and the music, it's up to each person to decide if they like it or love it or don't. I like it.

MCC, You thought Vegas was better, right? Could that be because it was indoors? Shoerline and Concord and Marysville are all outdoors, correct, and Vegas of course was inside.

JSS had said that Red Rocks affected him a bit, due to altitude. I told that dumbfucker to acclimate himself a day before he got there. But did he listen? No, he didn't.

Could be, but more likely because it was my first time seeing Jeff and Vegas has an energy all it's own. But I still felt he was a bit tired on night #2. I'll let you know what I think of the Boston show.

I'm not sure about that. I consider myself to be a good singer, but there is no way I can hit those notes with my head voice. It would be falsetto at best and then I would "flare" out. The notes that Perry sang in that song (and other tunes like "Lay It Down") are pretty difficult to SING. There are those who can hit them, but it sounds more like a yell.

Clasicrockldy,

Augeri is a good question. Yes, I guess he did float my boat. I seen Journey with Augeri 9 times. I was really impress in 98 when I seen them in Louisville. Steve A. was obviously uncomfortable but sounded great. Steve A. was really good through 2003 in my opinion. The tapegate deal really sucks and he obviously has been having trouble for some time. I liked the Arrival cd, it was a lot better than TBF but I wasn't into Red13 or Generations much. I think Steve A. is a great guy and was a good singer for several years. Was he Perry or a Perry clone, no. Could he cover the old material, absolutely.

Was Augeri the best choice for Journey's lead, no fuckin way. I seen Journey in '03 in Springfield, IL at the state fair duing the "Under the Radar" tour. The Storm was there performing a free show a couple of hours before Journey at the same fair. The Storm covered a couple of Rolie era Journey tunes and really kicked ass. They sounded better than Journey did that night. I think Chalfant would have been a better choice than Augeri. I also think Hugo would have been a better choice for Journey's lead. In fact, I'd say Hugo would be the best choice. I've heard all of the BS about his looks and so on. The bottom line is Hugo kicks ass as a song writer which is why I'd lean his way. His vocals are great and he can obviously cover the Perry era vocals but his writing is just superb in my opinion. Neal always talks about wanting to rock, well he could take some lessons by listening to the Valentine cd. I'd put it up against Escape any day.

What are your thoughts?

L8r,

Aaron

P.S. Props on giving up drinking. How about a Pepsi instead? I gave up chewing 10 years ago but I'm still working on alcohol and cussing.

Make that a Coca~Cola, Aaron, and you got a deal !

Anyway, I can see where you would want either Chalfant or Hugo. Hugo tho, it would be too creepy for Neal and Co because he also imitates Perry's moves and such, and they are trying to get away from that. I have some Storm songs here on my computer, but I haven't listened to them yet, so I really can't say anything about Chalfant's voice. I have seen some of Hugo's vids, but for some reason, I can't get into him when he is doing Perry. It is just me. So we may agree to disagree there........

I quit drinking cold turkey. No programs, nada. At the time I stopped drinking is when things got really rough for me between 93 and 97.....

Cussing is another thing......... I still do it ! LOLOL !

And for smoking......... I haven't quit yet even tho my 10 year old wants me to. :D

Deano,

I'm not sure why you think Soul SirkUS wasn't allowed to succeed but you have the inside track so I'll give you that. And you're right on about Gramps, Journey needs someone with a fuckin brain as management. I still say Soul SirkUS got a lot of attention with their cd and it didn't do much. It surely got as much attention as Journey have with their last three releases.

Rockn'deano wrote:SoulSirkus was NOT allowed to succeed. Yep, that's right. Good ol shit in your pants Azoff restricted SS in favour of letting Journey maintain status.......Stupid fucker.

Dude were drinking last night? How the fuck would I hear the writing magic of JSS and Neal when all of the songs were written by Schon, Cain and Perry. I'll give you the point that JSS has a lot of energy on stage. He is more agressive than Augeri was and takes command on stage. However, Augeri could sing and did so quite well for several years. I have no argument on the tapegate deal, he clearly has struggled for quite sometime. However, Augeri did a great job singing from 98 to 04. He may have lost it but he could sing.

Rockn'deano wrote:JSS and Neal obviously have that writing magic, that chemistry. Can't you hear it in this boot? Augeri Journey NEVER sounded this fired up..NEVER. Augeri couldn't write for dick, and he proved he couldn't sing for cock either.

No shit dude, that was my point. I don't think that bass players have influence either. Which means Journey = Soul SirkUS. Cain was pissy for a good reason, Journey doesn't sound like Journey anymore. My guess is he's thrown in the towel because he realized Journey is in their final hour.
Rockn'deano wrote:Valory plays bass dude...Bass players don't influence bands, except Rush. Cain is re-charged. He was all pissy about 2 months ago, and now he sees another 10 years for his once dying band.

Now, could you explain your complete 180 on this subject? What gives dude? You were balls out against Journey's sound with JSS and then poof, you're their biggest cheerleader. Goddamn, it reminds me of BT for fucks sakes. I'll tell you what I think. I think you got some free tickets, some back stage passes, and some personal treatment by the band which has swayed your opinion. You clearly had influence on the band's decision to oust Augeri and you got their attention. You got some personal treatment and now you're their biggest cheerleader. Am I wrong here? All I'm asking is for you to set aside the personal attention your recieved and any personal relationships you now have with the band and listen to the music. If you can do this, listen to shows before your personal treatment and after, and honestly say Journey is that much fuckin better I'll kiss your ass the next time you're in Indiana. I've heard the boots before, I seen them live in Indy, and I've heard the boots after Indy and there is no difference in performance in my opinion.

Clasicrockldy,

Alright, a Coca Cola it is but you're killing me (I'm a Pepsi person). I understand your comments about Hugo. He needs to find his own way but I don't let that crap get in the way. The man can write and sing both, those are the most important characteristics in my opinion. Damn woman, you have some Storm stuff and haven't listened to it. Have a listen! If you like Journey with Perry and Rolie, you'll like The Storm. If you haven't heard any of Hugo's stuff you should have a listen. Hugo's stuff, especially Valentine, kicks complete ass. Better Journey than Journey has produced since 83 if you ask me.

On the other subjects, it sounds like we're even. I quit chewing cold turkey with no BS, patches or anything else. I'll work on the drinking and you work on the smoking, how about that? Now on the cussing stuff, I'm still too juvenile so that will be tough. You have to have one vice don't you? I fuckin think so! :)

L8r,

Aaron

Sorry Aaron........... I am a Coca~Cola person thru and thru........ but hey, we can't all like the same thing........ what a boring world it would be !

Once I get a chance to organize and burn all the music files I have on this computer, I will do a search on Hugo and see what comes up. Right now, between the computer and the big pile of boots I have on a spindle, I am going to be quite busy for the next few days.........

I've tried to quit smoking........ but I still go back to it. My mind isn't set on giving that up. Yet.........
:D

I'm not sure why you think Soul SirkUS wasn't allowed to succeed but you have the inside track so I'll give you that. And you're right on about Gramps, Journey needs someone with a fuckin brain as management.

Azoff is brain dead. And he has the fucking runs too.

Look, SoulSirkus was Azoff as well, and that conflicted with Journey's success....so, SS is over...Easy, huh?

I still say Soul SirkUS got a lot of attention with their cd and it didn't do much. It surely got as much attention as Journey have with their last three releases.

SS got ZERO attention. That band should have made hay..What a shame. Grandpa elected to go ewith the catalogue and a lippin red leather panted fag singer than a real RnR band.

Dude, last time I checked Perry is off playing the ponies at Del Mar and watching the Dodgers....Look, if you can't see how good World Play is and the chemistry Schon and jeff share, than I am done typing.

However, Augeri could sing and did so quite well for several years.

Um, hate to break it to you, but Augeri hasn't been able to sing a note in a year plus....come on.....

I have no argument on the tapegate deal, he clearly has struggled for quite sometime. However, Augeri did a great job singing from 98 to 04. He may have lost it but he could sing.

You just contradicted yourself...Fraudgeri hasn't been able to sing well for 3 years.

Now, could you explain your complete 180 on this subject? What gives dude? You were balls out against Journey's sound with JSS and then poof, you're their biggest cheerleader. Goddamn, it reminds me of BT for fucks sakes.

Dude, retract that now!

I'll tell you what I think. I think you got some free tickets, some back stage passes, and some personal treatment by the band which has swayed your opinion.

Wrong.

You clearly had influence on the band's decision to oust Augeri and you got their attention.

Yes I did. I am proud to admit it too.

You got some personal treatment and now you're their biggest cheerleader. Am I wrong here?

Yes, you are.

All I'm asking is for you to set aside the personal attention your recieved and any personal relationships you now have with the band and listen to the music. Dude, The Band is LIVE now....they wern't then...Listen to the message sent from the band subliminally..Neal comes out as band leader, to the Who's "We Won't Get Fooled Again"......

He is saying, "ok, we got busted, but no more tape shit."

I am out.
