Everything that made past Journey records great is there. The difference makers are the drum sound, my favorite Perry performance, and my absolute favorite Schon playing.

That a good enough reason?

A good pal of mine called NoMoreTails god bless him will nail me to the wall on this.

I dunno. I just don't get it. Neal's playing is, on the whole, stifled and the songs just aren't there for me. I just think it sounds bland. And that's not easy with Schon and Perry in the mix.

Yep, got to agree with NIG. After trying to convince friends that Journey was really a ROCK band, after the success of Open Arms and Faithfully, they come out with ROR, it was embarrassing to tell people you were a Journey fan. A couple of those songs could have found their way to Freedom: The Album That Should Have Been, the rest belonged on Street Talk Volume 2.

frostbite wrote:I have agreed with Matthew on more than one occasion here and he's a cool guy...but I'm with NIG on this one. I remember taking Raised On Radio home and hating it. I do not know how people accept it as a Journey record. It is foul. "Positive Touch"? OH MY GOD. It is an album full of dire pop and the only reason I thought the title track and "Be Good.." were ok was only in comparison to the rest of the shite on there. A baaaad album...it wouldn't even pass for a Phil Collins album. And he's crap.

On the other hand I think TBF is a fine album. A bit formulaic in places but it's strong. It's a world apart from Raised On Radio which just plain stinks. Even though it's got Perry's voice, he couldn't salvage tripe like "When You Love Somebody". Even typing that song title made me shudder.

 That's exactly how I felt the day I bought Arrival...OH MY GOD...etc

Come on Frostbite...Journey have always been a bit 'pop'...."Lights", "LTS", "Anyway You Want it"...let alone the execrable "All The Way"...these are hardly deep cuts from the underground are they?

And I've never understood the criticism that ROR is bland. Sure, it favours keyboards over rhythm guitars but Perry is sweating blood on this record - and some of Schon's solos are superb - esp "BGTY", "IBAWY" and "Suzanne".

I agree with you on TBF though! Yes, it's a bit uninspired in places but overall it was an excellent comeback album - and I loved the way Perry's voice sounded ten years on.

Anyway...we've drifted away from the topic re: Journey making a comeback now (or not), haven't we?

VERY well put. When I was 18, I was more into hard rock, but loved Journey. I remember my friends giving me shit b/c I was going to see them on that tour. That album was just not the Journey I knew and loved. But I respect people for liking and loving it. Just not my taste.

People have ALWAYS given me shit for loving Journey! The band could release a death metal album and I'd STILL get shit. They've never been cool and they never will. And I couldn't care less. I feel no shame.

By the way, where you stand on Queen? They followed a very similar path in the 1980s - from classic rock to keyboard/drum-machine driven pop/rock. I reckon it's a sign of an extraordinary band if they keep reinventing themselves with each album - but I guess there must be Queen fans who lament the arrival of the mid-80s too.

Neal Schon's guitar work and Steve Perry's vocals will ensure that it is NEVER a "bland pop album." Like it or not, 3 songs made it on the "Greatest Hits" album, and it's sold, what, 14 million copies. While it certainly lacked "rockers," it was still a very good album.

I have lots of friends that ridicule me to no end about being a Journey fan. I have however found a cure. At an unsuspecting moment, I causally put a Journey song on and then I leave the room, I wait a minute, come back in and see how many of them are singing their hearts out-I point out that they are infact closet Journey fans and just won't admit it-It shuts them up fast and it works everytime!!!!!

I thought the title of this thread had to do with Mr. MelodiCrock telling his story about how he was the one to give Neal Jeff's # etc.

Now we all know why he covered the story like he did. Yeah.

Deano...I still don't get your turnaround either. When all this started- Journey was finished.

Made? Drum machine, firing two members? It's a crap record, and only Schon and Friga and Perrys talent made it decent.....at best.

I don't think any questions need to be asked. It's obvious what happened and why. Why you did and acted like you did- and are acting like you are now. The same goes for Andrew, including the way he responded to my internet payola comment.

Have a great weekend kids(well..mine starts tomorrow at least). I wonder what Journey will have to do next to...ah...get it on?

Well, in Camden, NJ on the start of this tour, after Journey finished their set, and only 2 of ???? were played, half of the fans there---left.. I was there and saw it!!! even with SA not singing well and being sick they still rocked the house not ??????? Deen C. has incredible vocals.!!!!!!They are my band and I love them and Steve Perry , of course. They would make history if he came back. I pray every nite. :)

I had to fly up from Charleston to Philly and buy 2 tix to that show.. It cost me a fortune. SA should have been long gone by then since he was having problems in Euro.
Now that was a waste of money. None of SP shows would have been a waste of money!!!!

I think he is talking about...shit, I really don't know.

But if he thinks I was paid by Journey or anyone for that matter, he is mistaken. My love for Neal, Jeff and the boys far outweighs any money Rolling Stone offered. I told them to go fuck themselves. In fact, the woman showed me her article and I said, I wouldn't run that if I were you, because it has many errors in it. She did NOT run it.

I told Schon I would go to war for him and the band. He believes me.

I'm so sure you already fought Neal's dirty little war for him and he rewarded you well. Yep been lurking and putting the whole story together. 0 Must say it has been a good read. How about posting a pic of you with the band from this past weekend?
