I think Cain was to be used as a keyboard player and second guitarist, with Rolie doing only keys-ERIC

Kevin, Rolie and the guys (Jon & Neal) were writing together, that much is known.
Kevin confirmed this in several interviews.

I can appreciate your being a fan of Kevin's, but if you're making the comparison based on an R&B singing style, have you actually heard anything else Jeff Scott Soto has done besides Skrapp Metal?

Here's what I know. Consider it the official "Chalfant Journey" FAQ.
Its still very sketchy.
Anyone who knows more is encouraged to add on.

Andrew: "Ok, tough question...we all know you almost had the job as vox in Journey...what really went wrong?"
Kevin Chalfant: "Man, Andrew, you like to dig don't you? I am going to buy you a tractor with a back hoe on it one of these days!
Journey...they are my musical family. I have gotten so much from being associated with their incredible legacy. First of all, I harbor no bitterness of anger for the decision they have made. Many people ask me this question and I have to say that I am just very blessed and fortunate to be able to say that they are my friends. I had been writing with Neal, Jonathan, and Gregg when the rumors were flying.Steve Perry came back to make another record and Ross told me that they (Steve & Ross) had discussed me. He told Ross that he thought that I was a great singer, the feelings are mutual. After that record was released, the feelings about my involvement changed. I can't put my finger on any one thing. It doesn't really matter though. Steve Augeri is a great guy and a great talent. I hope that they let us open for them. It sure would make for an exciting evening for the fans, would it not?"
There is a theory that when Sony caught wind of the fact that Journey was reforming sans Perry, it served as a gadfly for Sony to do everything in their power to lure Perry back in. They didn't want to sign Journey without Perry. So in return for one last push of a FTLOSM single, Perry acquiesced and agreed to join his former bandmates. Or so goes the theory.
Steve's drummer in the FTLOSM band sorta confirmed this saying,
"We could have worked for another 2 years easily, but it wasn't just the Bronchitis thing, once Steve recovered from that from what I know Sony was saying "Look, if you come to the table to talk about doing this Journey Reunion thing (TBF), we will release another single off your solo CD" (FTLOSM). So of course he did that and they released the single yet didn't support it and just let it fall to the side sorta. But that's what got him to go back in to do the Journey Reunion."
Also, the alleged "Rolie + Kevin" lineup was also semi confirmed on a radio interview several years back (not sure which program, maybe Rockline) where Ross was asked what happened to the idea of Rolie coming back into the fold. Ross said (paraphrasing here) that Sony wanted a lineup that most closely resembled the Escape era, and that's why it never came to be.

It just seems like some resentment must have still been there between Chalfant/Rollie and Neal/Jon. Just curious, but hey, maybe the only ones who know about this time frame are the principals themselves.

The Chalfant interview is from 2000 after Arrival.
I'm really not sure how much more I can help you.
Neal has stated that Kevin was considered, but since "The Storm" already was essentially a mini-Journey band, he wanted to leave that be and start fresh. It just seems like some resentment must have still been there between Chalfant/Rollie and Neal/Jon. I think Monker has mentioned that Neal shafted Rolie by leaving Abraxas Pool and therefore, there is some bad blood.
I have no information on that.

Here's the whole story on that. Not one of my proudest moments. Had drank about 8 of those $10 House of Blues 24 ounce beers, plus a sixer before hand. After the show, Barry and I were bombed. We decided to go on a mission to catch the band getting on the bus after the show, and Sabrina, playing den mother and knowing me quite well, thought that would not be a good idea.
I guess everyone was already on the bus when we got out there, but there were maybe 30 people standing around, so Ross drew the short straw and made his way down the handshake line. The girl to my right was a bass player, apparently, and when Ross got to her, they started talking shop. Being wasted, I kind of thought the whole conversation was a little goofy. I don't know why - Because it wasn't - But in that frame of mind I didn't know any better. I overheard Ross talking about his Curbow bass to her, and then he turned and stuck out his hand to me. I blurted out, "Ross, you Curbow playin' motherfucker!" Ross looked shocked and dismayed, and went to shake Barry's hand while looking at Sabrina with a "What is he on?" face.
I do believe my original story said "Bass playin' motherfucker," but over time I have gotten less embarassed by it, and felt like the true story should come out.
Lick ass!

No but I saw Journey twice on this tour and the Storm open for Bryan Adams in '92. Kevin, Rollie & Ross were great together. (Smith didn't tour with them) The Storm were better.

I take it you're not a Bad English fan?
Good luck with your Gregg interview or sit-down, or fat-chewing session, whatever it turns out to be.![]()
Bad English? Are you kidding me? Yeah, so they had Neal and Deen. Friga looked like a gay Napolean all dressed up in long gowns and frilly white ruffle shirts. Then you add in a Euro trash singer in Jon Waite...yeah, that dude walks like he just got pumped in the back door.
No thanks.
Edited to wish Dean good luck with getting Gregg to spill the rockin' beanos.

I am talking about after TBF and the Perry/Journey split. Arrival was on Sony, wasn't it? So Perry was gone and Sony knew it. I am just curious why they had to go through the vocalists auditions, when they could have possibly gotten the Chalfant/Rolie line-up back. It just seems that after being snub in favor of Perry, that possibly Rollie was a bit pissed at Neal. But then again, he has Neal guest on his Roots album. Maybe it was as you alluded that Jon may have had some second thoughts about the situation.
AlienC wrote: If I may interject into this, (as this was the time I came back onboard with Journey Inc.),
There was a point where we have exactly that line up mentioned previously ..... Schon, Valory, Smith, Cain, Rolie & Chalfant.
This line up performed at the Herbie Herbert Roast Benefit for Thunder Road Foundation and I think if you ask Ms. Laura nicely, (et al FanAsylum), one may get pictoral proof. I have photos (somewhere in the 50,000 odd photos I have from 25 years in the biz)of Jon and Rolie playing 4 handed on the whale. Vibes within this incarnation were good
At this point, Herbie was still involved, spiritually speaking, and there was considerable movement of resources in an effort to create a state where chemistry might re-ignite. I think there was just a fair (reasonable) amount of trepidation on the part of the 2 primary stockholders of going the route without Perry without having gone to the mat with SONY as far as SP was concerned.
Alas, it was not to be within that time and space. One of my last "Should-a , Would-A, Could-A" conversations EVAH with Herbie was about that particular line up and the biz that could have been as a result.....
Just think.... EVERYTHING from TOPAZ and MYSTERY MOUNTAIN onward. A 3 hour show.... A three hour show.... The weather started getting rough, the tiny band was tossed. If not for the courage of the FEARLESS CREW.... oh wait.... that's in MY HEAD......![]()
Ahhh , what could have been.....
