Which of the "dirty dozen" can go?

Personally, you simply rotate them. You don't "dump" any of them. You simply play Open Arms at one concert but not the next. At the next concert you don't play Open Arms, but rather Lights (just an example). Geographically speaking, this will reward folks who see several shows that are near in distance to each other. They won't hear the SAME setlist 2 or 3 shows in a row. Loyal fans get to hear ALL of Journey's "Dirty Dozen" this way...just not all at the same show. Rotate several ballads and rotate several rockers. It just seems to make the most sense. This way there is also the anticipation of "Hey, I wonder what songs they'll play tonight?" THAT'S something I haven't been able to say in a long time!!!

I assume this must be the dirty dozen?

Wheel in the Sky - drop
Who's Cryin' Now - drop
Any Way You Want It - drop
Don't Stop Believin'
Open Arms
Lovin Touchin Squeezin - drop
Lights
Separate Ways
Faithfully
Girl Can't Help It - drop
I'll Be Alright Without You - drop
Still They Ride - drop

All the songs I put "drop" next to just aren't the strongest of the Greatest Hits. They could easily drop those 6 and replace them with 6 new "b" sides and add 3 NEW tunes from the new CD, replacing some of the overdone B sides/live standards like Escape and Ask The Lonely. I'd like to hear these B-sides in the set someday:

La Do Da
Raised on Radio
Frontiers
The Party's Over
Can't Tame The Lion

Oh yeah, and bring back Stay Awhile! As for B sides I couldn't care less about hearing again - Escape is pretty much the only one, the piano and changeups in Ask The Lonely is the only thing that keeps that one fresh for me, and - dare I say it - Neal's solos at the end of Edge of the Blade are the only things that keep my interest in that one as well.....

Best decision to add a song of 2006: Dead or Alive, with Message of Love as close runner up.

God, I HOPE so! I would like to see them lose up to four and replace those with brand new material. Will people get up and go buy beer? Possibly, but they'll still hear the new songs in the background.

They need to KEEP (or put in) the following:
Separate Ways
Don't Stop Believin'
Stone in Love
Keep on Runnin'
Lay It Down

After those, I don't care which classics they play, but PLEASE put in NEW music - 3 to 4 would be fine and I don't think that's asking too much.

If they're truly moving in more of a "rock" direction, "Mother Father" needs to get played more. That song simply kicks ass.

I still think it would be a good idea at some point after the release and audience acceptance of some new material to group a lot of the classics into two medleys, one for ballads and one for rockers, within the show. That way the audience gets to hear what made Journey great and connect with the nostagia, but also gets to hear what Journey is today.

Please keep AWYWI!!!! I love that song!!! I think it's really fun to hear live! I could do without anything from ROR. I also say get rid of Only the Young. I think it's going to be tough to get rid of the "classic" Journey songs. Can you imagine being a casual fan and not hearing Wheel In the Sky at a Journey show?

I agree with you totally. I realize that it is a huge hit, but I never have liked it and never will. Drop it... I'm sick of it. My favorite escape era boot doesn't have "broken arms" on it.

It got me started too, they just play it too fast now- it sounds rushed.

I agree completely. While I know Journey will always have to play the standards, if they group them together in medleys, then there's more of a chance that people will get the idea that "Hey folks, we love the classics, but we're moving on!"

Exactly!! Of course that will only work for the masses after they have some airplay(of whatever sort, TV, movie, radio) and resulting recognition for new music. The nostalgic crowds would leave them high and dry if they don't recognize the distinction between "then and now" before they get to the show.

Journey doing medleys?!? :? I can't even imagine that, sorry.I just couldn't listen to a thing like that.

IMO,every song is a gem by itself, people love to hear the way they start, the solos, and cheer all the way when they end.
Mixing them altogether would take away from their beauty and power...Journey shouldn't touch them.

Also, let's be honest - the Dirty Dozen IS what Journey is loved for,so none of those songs should be dumped.
For the next big tour (2008) what they could do would be to try and balance the setlist.Maybe 2 songs from every Perry era album and the rest should be the new material. This way not only the long time fans would be happy, but the new songs would be promoted as well. They will HAVE to be.

As for people getting bored with the same classic setlist,I guess if the guys would do a "remove and add" thing with the goldies in every show, people will react better than having to listen to a standard playlist.Rotate them,as someone said here.
But I think Journey have already tried that, and people were happy to hear Message Of Love for example...
The band should surprise their fans with every show.

Take out Lovin Touchin Squeezin or Lights? Just wouldn't be a "Journey" concert if you took one or the other out, IMO. Since I haven't been to a Journey concert since '82..........the 2 I would most like to see in concert is JSS singing 'I'll Be Alright Without You' and Deen singing 'Still They Ride'. Jeremey mentioned ROR and La Do Da, I wouldn't mind seeing Jeff tackle either one of those either. I have a boot that has Deen doing La Do Da and he nails it even with all that drumming in it. I'm thinking JSS would do well with that one too. Hmmm, between JSS and Deen.......the possibilities are endless now. :)

the staples of journey are... LTS, AnyWay you want it and Dont stop.. and Wheel..
if they were to play any public tv or event... these songs would need to be played... period.

ones I could care less on are most of escape... can keep..stone in love in there..

Ones I would add

my dirty dozen.. today..

LTS/city of angels..
WHEEL
Stone in Love
Just the Same way
feeling that way anytime.
too late
do you recall
partys over
seperate ways
lights

That's because it was so overworked in the studio. Geoff Workman massaged Gregg's keys and STACKED the vocals to such celestial heights that playing it live results in nothing more than a thin shadow of it. That's one of the reasons they speed it up, too.

It would be cool to hear Jeff do Precious Time with Jon rocking the harmonica and Deen really banging out the drums. Would like to hear Jeffs take on Good Morning Girl...simple song but challenging to sing...would be cool to see it done onstage with some strings...then immediately go into Homemade Love with the strings jamming....and Winds of March with strings. Would like to hear his take on Happy To Give...another hard one with soaring vocal parts. Like to hear Ross jam the bass on Once You Love Somebody. 8)

Still Journey is Journey it always sounds cool...
I love hearing the surprises in the set
Would be cool to hear JSS sing Walks like a lady or After the wall.....

First, I think we should ID exactly which 11-13 songs would comprise "The Dirty Dozen."

Wheel
Lights
Anyway You...
SIL
DSB
L,T,S
Maybe WCN
OA
F
SW
BGTYS

I think the above 11 are the dozen, songs that on the average (give or take a night or 2 here and there) that are ominpresent in the set.

I have a feeling that the band, especially Schon, enjoy the energy that the dozen infuses the crowd with so about 10 of these will ALWAYS be there...

that said, obviously to a lot of our chargrin, OA and F are untouchable. I'd prolly deep 6 AWYWI.

Wheel -- Drop
Lights -- Keep
Anyway You... -- I like it better live to be honest
SIL -- Must never ever be dropped
DSB -- Bury it in the backyard
L,T,S -- I like it. Keep it.
Lights -- ?? When did they start playing Lights twice in a show??
OA -- don't care. drop it I guess.
F -- Probably should stay
SW -- keep it
BGTYS -- keeeeep it.

Add Mother Father. Keep Escape and Dead or Alive (if they're still doing those).
Add Girl Can't Help It. Pull out Lovin' You is Easy and La Do Da just for laughs.
And Rubicon.

Second to DSB, this is prolly Journey's most enduring song.
I hear it regularly played at sports games.

Sounds shitty live, but it must stay.
