I know you're a musician, so I'll ask, why is exposure a scary word?
Examples familiar to most musicians (obviously not on the level of Journey!)
• Come play this fraternity/house party for free, it'd be great exposure
• Pay us $500 to put your song on this complition. It'd be great exposure
• There will be over 3000 people at this sporting event, come set up and play in the parking lot for free, you'll get lots of exposure
• Our club is among the hippest in town. We can't even cover your bar tab, but if you play it'll be great exposure for you and your band
• Country artist Billy Ray Spongebob needs an opening band at this car dealership promotion. We can't pay you anything, but think of the exposure
• Our nudist camp needs a band for Saturday night bonfire entertainment. We can't pay you but, well, you know the punchline....
Granted, there's legitimate means to get exposure (these days they usually involve showing up on the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack or hiring the Karate Kid to star in your YouTube video), but my point was that's usually a term musicians have been stung by in the past (and way beyond the needs of a band like Journey)...
