I personally think the Takara stuff are kind of "average" compared to other projects Jeff's beein involved with. I think part of that might be that I prefer Marcel Jacobs songwritting/bass lines.

AND in addition to all of above, he is a maestro at DVD-Authoring. He produced Talismans "Worlds Best Kept Secret" DVD (and of course the Gods and Queen DVD's as well).
If I had to choose my ALL STAR band, He would be playing the Guitar, Marcel Bass, Jeff Vox of course, Neal on lead Guitars and Patrick Johansson on drums and Derik Sherian on Keyboard .

No, he's not a bass legend. He's a friend of mine. Lives near me and has a band that plays in clubs in Florida. He's done alot of solo work too. Been working on a new album. Here's his newest solo release.

I've got to disagree with you there, Red. Valory was the best player for - say - Escape but Jackson was the best for ROR.

Who gives a rip about "funky?" It's Journey not Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
While I think Jaxon functioned for ROR, I think the bottoms of the songs would've more typically precise, subtle, and solid with Ross Valory.

However, I feel the Londin drums worked swimmingly for the project, I prefer harder-hitting drums ergo Deen C's my all-time favorite Journey drummer.

actually, Matthew, no one is a legend until a buncha people figure out that the person SHOULD be a legend. gotta start somewhere, eh? that's why he is mentioned so much. take a listen and look at all that Gary has done and you might change your mind. he plays bass ,guitar, keys, drums at a virtuostic level, writes it all himself, sings it, films it, produces it, does the artwork and would buy you a meal if you were with him. (i.e. nice guy) his new instrumental cd is going to be incredible. He's an unbelievable talent and we are just trying to get the word out about him and what he is doing because he is making a push to promote some things he is doing and we are giving him a leg up. Well, Perry, Schon and Cain obviously cared about the funky aspects of the record otherwise they wouldn't have hired him. And on I'll Be Alright Without You (and indeed on After The Fall on Frontiers) the 'groove' is a key part of the song. Listen to Jackson on - say - the last minute or so on IBAWY and it's obvious Journey made the right choice.

Also - Jackson played in a solid, driving style too - on BGTY.

Having said all this...Valory's playing works brilliantly on Escape and although Jackson could play those parts with his hands tied behind his back I doubt he would have brought the right 'feel' to Escape.

Would anyone even know who Randy Jackson was, as a bass player, if he hadn't played for Journey?? I guess that's the point here, there are many many talented musicians out there, and without word of mouth and being found they will never be legendary. Not all of them need to be legendary anyway. They just love and enjoy playing and getting to do what they love. This forum has many off topic things in it, and I say if we want to discuss Gary Schutt, we should be able to. Love Me For Me--his video and song. wrote it, sang it, bass, guitar, drums and vocals, (hired musicians for the video-those guys will tour with him) made the video.

his solo stuff is quite a bit harder than the Takara, which is ok by me.

the Queens' dvd --he's a monster on the Queen's bass stuff plus he produced that video, and sang

Live at the Gods 2002. the acoustic set is amazing. he produced this video also. bass guitar and vocals.

Randy was part of Journey for what, 1 year. Maybe if he had played with them for more years we would give him more credit than we do. There are black musicians whose music I love so don't even try to use that. Yeah, maybe his stylish spandex and pink polka dotted guitar in the 80's was just too much for me to handle

Takara is a lot of fun, it has been guitarist Neal Grusky's baby since the inception and Jeff brought some incredible magic to the songs during his tenure. I learned a lot from watching Jeff work on these tracks. The Eternity album features the best of the Jeff years, and there are soundclips on the band's My Space page at http://www.myspace.com/takararocks.

I am also a huge Marcel fan (great writer too!), but to Gary Schutt's credit he is a versatile utility man who can do it all - sing lead, high harmonies, play bass, guitar, keyboards, mix, produce videos, etc. He is also funny as hell and extremely humble - just the kind of guy you would want in a band. Check out his video and vote, it is phenomenal!
