I haven't given it a listen yet, but me and Deano's tastes usually allign (see Believe, Butterfly, our insatiable penchant for sexually ambiguous Phillipino ladyboys) so if he says it sucks, I'm apt to believe him.

Look, here's what's important that I think the fans are missing: when was the last time this band wrote anything on the road and then played it live?
If Deano's right, and this is actually a one-off that won't make it on an album, that's all the more better: it tells me they have new music to burn.

This fighting talk is all very seductive, SATW...and I've got to admire your blind faith...but that's all it is, isn't it? Blind faith. There's no actual evidence so far that the future sound of Journey will differ from the old...

Actually, I change my mind the whole time about whether or not I want Journey to change direction. Sometimes I want Journey to head off into a new direction entirely. Other times I think 'what's the pioint in that? Just bring on another epic 1980s style ballad for fuck's sake.'

But what I do want to hear is some SOUL on a Journey record for the first time in ten years.

Anyway...whatever happens...at least the band are shit-hot in concert again. And there's plenty of evidence for that.

Welcome back, fucker. As for the new song, it sucked. Very vanilla. A sign of things to come? No way....just an event specific song done rather quickly to please the pompous pricks running the event.

Why did they even agree to write a song for these people? Was it an especially well-paid commission? Or did they do it for the 'honour' and out of a deep pride in the history of Virginia?

Only the band members could answer that question, Matt. My GUESS would be that they thought it would be cool to put a little something together to honor the event, appease the event sponsors and at the same time use it for a warm up to see where they're at as far as collaboration goes. Just a guess, though.

My take is that it was for a big fat check and also for a good national exposure for the band.
Enough reasons to cook up a special song for the event, even if the style is not reflecting the future sound of Journey.(although the song is NOT bad)

Yep. Right off the bat I could tell HP had that "IT" absent from the good rockers on TBF.

The Place In Your Heart, same thing. Schon/Cain magic.

Also, see a goodly # of peeps pulling the "ho hum, this is the same old, same old/sounds like other stuff they've done/lot of perryisms in the song" routine. Which is fine, as long as those same critics didn't bitch before that it might not sound like Journey with JSS out front.

Gotta pick a side on it, not try to grab both ways.

One problem - Cain didn't write 'Higher Place'.
I think all the tracks Jack Blades had a hand in have a little more contemporary vibrancy, but not by much.
As it stands, the rockers on TBF (MOL, OM, CSTL, ICSIYE) can stand toe-to-toe with pretty much anything the band has done.
With the exception of maybe Red 13, has the band has ever rocked harder than onTBF's "One More" and "I Can See It In Your Eyes"?

I agree with what I think you're saying. If this is an example of something they can throw together for a one-off occasion and then throw away, it means they've got talent and inspiration to burn.

Yea, Schon/Cain/Blades innit?

I remember thinking upon hearign TPIYH that it must've been a Blades co-write and was pumped when I found it was pure Schon/Cain.

That's what you get with a power structure of Perry and Kevin Shirley.

Perry and Shirley were sloppy and lazy? I'd say both their reputations in the studuio suggests otherwise...

Nah Matt. It's a whole new day with a whole new band. There was some good material on Generations but they just didn't have their hearts into it. They were creatively stagnated then, because they were carrying around a lot of dead weight. They've got a new driving force now. Image

Maybe Schon takes that attidue when not on board with the musical direction.
On ROR, I think he focused that frustration into his best track-for-track playing on a Journey album yet, but it didn't work for TBF. Shirley/Perry produced a soft, sleepy, hollow effort there for the most part. I still enjoy listening to it though :)

I'm with you on this one, though.

I'm way over the live fetish that permeates here.

Been there, done it, JSS is more than proven I'm ready for the next album.

I think Perry the producer made Neal the guitaritst CHALLENGE himself into an amazingly diverse bunch of guitar tracks on ROR that ran the gamut from rock to bluesy, to jazzy and there was restraint from Neal in places that was perfect.

Incredible, if at times perhaps unNeal-like, playing.

Hell they might very well have been better of with Perry as producer on TBF.
