Listening to "Frontiers" Remastered this week

Postby Jeremey » Fri Jun 01, 2007 10:26 pm

What a great fucking record. By far, my favorite of Journey's catalog, and with the remastering they did last year, it sounds unbelievable! Perry's voice sounds like polished steel on that record. How much of that was natural and how much was effect, I wonder. There seems to be a slight "doubling" effect or just a dash of chorus that adds to the sheen. I found myself even loving "Backtalk" after not hearing it for several years. Smith's drums are unreal in this recording. But the highlight for me was rediscovering the song "Frontiers." It just seems pretty timely with the world's tribulations these days. Anyone giving this gem a listen lately?

Funny you mentioned this,Jeremey...I had the remastered Frontiers playing in my car's CDplayer all last week, just couldn't change it.
It sounds exactly as you say,so crisp and fresh, just like it was recorded last week! I'm redescovering it big time, hearing things I didn't hear before.

What struck me about the song Frontiers now (and not when I first heard it) was a kind of Genesis feel to it...Maybe it's just me,tho.
It's such a good song, that odd rhythm is really haunting...Love it much more than I did before.

I found myself wondering why is there a list of songs that we,the fans, don't usually listen to too much,at least not with the frequency we spin the others...Such a shame.I really turned up the volume when Troubled Child and Rubicon came on.Cool, cool songs.
This band produced gem after gem after gem,and I agree, even Back Talk has it's brilliance - the drums are fantastic indeed and Perry's ability to "sing-talk" that way points out his unique talent once again.

Damn, J, I wasn't gonna spend my hard earned bucks on any of these remasters, but you've got me tempted to run out to the record store at lunchtime.

Last year's version of "Frontiers" wasn't really remastered, just re-released with new packaging, wasn't it?

Blasphemy.

Dude get them all. Or if you want to save, avoid Evolution, Infinity and Captured, all of which are still just the '96 remasters for some reason even though Kalodner promised 06 remasters for the whole catalogue (anyone know why this is BTW?). I still didn't feel cheated on those because it's still an upgrade on the original masters and the booklets are the greatest thing ever...Poonie and Lora did a nice job populating those with period memorablilia.

I agree w/ JDog here, perry's really striking and resonant on Frontiers, just sounds very very sharp, despite ever so slightly (near imperceptible) more rasp than the great ESC4P3.

Me too. I only got the remasters of Street Talk and FTLOSM because of the new songs on them. Now I really want to hear Frontiers and if I'm gonna get that I'm gonna get ROR too.

Aw come ON, Sherrie. Escape has a La Raza that's different than the Time 3 one and Frontiers has a very different version of Only Solutions.

Hmmm... no results when searching Amazon for "Journey Frontiers remaster". Is this hard to find?

Never mind - found it.

LOL, no NealIsGod.

It can be readilly accessible if you, go outside and drive to these places that actually sell cds called Circuit City or FYE. I got all mine at either of those 2 places. @ CC they'll be 11.99 @Fye 13.99.

I'll throw a plug to the FYE near me, the place is tiny but the manager ensures an amazing variety of titles.

He actually had at one point EVERY reissue including all 3 perrys. And I noticed he replaced them within a week when I bought them.

I don't think I'll pop for Escape just yet. I ususally listen to the Houston CD instead of the studio CD of that anyway. I am getting Frontiers and ROR though.

I couldn't WAIT to get ROR :D

Anybody know the deal on the drastically different Only Solutions on the F remaster? When it was cut? What came first that or the Time3 one? It almost sounds like a demo.

I bought them all, but I'm looking at Escape now (I have that one in the office) and all it says here is reissues. It's the ones with the snazzy booklets :?

I've got a bootleg compilation that has an alternate version of Only Solutions on it. It's listed on there as the original version. I wonder if it's the same as the one on the Frontiers remaster. :?:

Look at the part on the last 2 pages where it says "Original Album Credits" followed then by "Reissue credits" and should say remastered by Dave Donnelly 2006.

No, on the rare occasion I actually buy a CD in a store, I go to Record & Tape Traders. Walked in there yesterday and bought a Sammy & the Waboritas t-shirt. :P

That reminds me, 13, I dropped your 3 CDs in the mail today. You're gonna love 'em.

Could be, someone get the Time3 book out and see if the one on THAT is some other version....I just look at that one as the real one because I been familair w/ it for years.

It doesn't say in the Time3 booklet, I just looked. I dug out the bootleg though and it also has the original La Raza on it.

Oh, that's gotta be the '96 remaster then....check the date is it '96 by Ludwig in Portland, ME?

If that's so then that is 4 that they didn't remaster, broken up by Departure being remastered in 2006 right in the middle. WTF?

In the past 2 weeks I've gotten both Trial By Fire and Frontiers. A few, as R13Joe posted, are simply repackaged reissues of the 96 remasters, but I know that Frontiers, ROR, and TBF are all newly remastered. I don't have my book in front of me, but I believe Frontiers was remastered in Studio City CA, not by Ludwig in ME.

The clarity and brilliance of the remasters is amazing. There are sounds and textures, particularly on TBF, that I never noticed before. The extra tracks are polished as well - I had never heard I Can See It In Your Eyes before, and Only Solutions sounds like a remix AND remaster of the original Time 3 version.

Definitely worth the $12.99!

J, I think you should cover or at least demo Only Solutions and slap it up here.

I want to hear you on that.

I DEFINATELY know that Frontiers IS a 2006 remaster as are Dept, ROR and TBF....I just thought ESC4P3 was too....now since I don't have it in front of me I'm less sure.

It's a cool song, very different, very boppy-eighties feel to it. I'm not sure it would go over during the average Frontiers show, but we will be having some time off, may be a chance to revisit it!

If they play in DE again, you have NO excuse not to be there.
