Perhaps they could have expanded on a new, fresh sound, thrown in whatever Journey classics THEY felt like playing in their live shows (instead of HAVING to rely on the dirty dozen) and not worry about being pigeon-holed into having to stick to a specific sound/style.
Think about it - by doing this, they could have gotten better mainstream exposure (think Velvet Revolver vs. GNR now), plus this could have left a wider, friendlier door open for a huge ruinion tour at some point with Perry and Smith.
Thoughts?
Maybe artistically Perry was right, but they wouldn't have made nearly the same money by changing their name. I think the name Journey in itself is a big draw. It's amazing to me how many people think SP is still in the band.
