Perhaps they could have expanded on a new, fresh sound, thrown in whatever Journey classics THEY felt like playing in their live shows (instead of HAVING to rely on the dirty dozen) and not worry about being pigeon-holed into having to stick to a specific sound/style.

Think about it - by doing this, they could have gotten better mainstream exposure (think Velvet Revolver vs. GNR now), plus this could have left a wider, friendlier door open for a huge ruinion tour at some point with Perry and Smith.

Thoughts?

Maybe artistically Perry was right, but they wouldn't have made nearly the same money by changing their name. I think the name Journey in itself is a big draw. It's amazing to me how many people think SP is still in the band.

She filmed a movie here a few months ago. Did a couple of scenes right up the street from my house and some downtown a couple blocks from work. I couldn't actually ever catch her in person, though. :( The movie's title during filming was "Bill" and also starred Aaron Eckhart.

Yes, Perry was right....

But moving quickly on.......have I missed something here? A few people are talking as though the new line-up won't record anything and that the early promise of this line-up won't be fulfilled after all and so on and so forth.

Isn't JSS just on a farewell tour with Talisman at the moment? Or have serious decisions been made recently in the Journey camp?

Not quite sure myself what kicked up this topic or the opinions. Just thought it was a fun little opportunity to express something that I've felt for about 10 years now. Not that I'm slamming any of the current members - I'm just someone who likes to see talent succeed without HAVING to meet a criteria is all.

They've sucked since 98.
JSS- a great frontman working with a musically stagnant band. No fire or emotion in the music anymore. Jeff, should leave and seek a group of guys with more creativity. Journey is artistically dead.

Schon- Same playing for the better part of 20 years (as it pertains to Journey). Melodic, only at times, then a crammed 30 second solo.

Cain- Guy hasn't done shit since Frontiers. Shouldn't even be in the band. A "divider." Completely useless. A control freak who's running around like a dog with a 20 year old bone in his mouth. Should be fired immediately, if at all possible.

Castronovo- Great guy and a great drummer....just not in Journey. All of Journey's original material with HIM in the band has featured mediocre drumming, at best. The band needs Smith back. Thanks Deen, but you too are fired.

Valory- Ah, good old Ross. A great bassist and a good man. Ross is a keeper, always has been (hear that Perry). Needs Smith back, though. The two of them really layed it down.

That's my 2 minute review of Journe as we now know them.

PS Azoff should be fired too, but I figured that goes without saying. As of right NOW, Journey sucks. I'd rather go see Frontiers. They actually look like they love what they're doing. I can only say that about Jeff and Ross as far as Journey goes.

I don't know about all of the firings but I agree with everything else.

I still argue that the root cause here is the fans. JOURNEY has been pandering to fans that want 1981 JOURNEY or else they'll run for beers.

JOURNEY has lost their core nature: CHANGE. Sure they've been changing personnel, management, labels, etc. however these changes haven't been driven with the same confidence and sense of adventure that's been behind every previous change.

The enemy within? Who? Jonathan Cain? Is he unhappy with having JSS in the band?

True.
Flippin idiots have SUCH ADD it's incredible. It's not even relegated to new songs, either. old songs not on the GH trigger stampeeds, too.

Agree on Journey being a big draw, but did they CHANGE their name to Bad English? The Storm? Hardline?
They were new bands with a connection to Journey.

No, it's definitely the majority of the fans. They only care about hearing the hits they remember from their youth. Probably don't even own a Journey album.

Well, perhaps it's been a mistake for Journey to keep trying to humour these people who don't really give a shit. Bands like Rush don't cater to the casual fan and they can do whatever they like.

Part of the problem is no new music with their current lead singer.....most important they get a new album out there if they want to continue! If touring behind the dirty dozen is all they want, they will die a slow death.....which will make me very sad!

But they buy the tickets and they fill the seats. How can they fill enough seats in so many cities with just hardcore fans?????

The truth might be somewhere in the middle as always...

However, the bottom of the bottom line is "it's all 'bout the money".Once a band gets a taste of that, there's no turning back. They'll sell whatever the fans ask.

As I said...Rush do it...and so do Metallica...these acts aren't restricted in the slightest by their fan base....

I guess Journey are too much of a pop band though to pull it off though - and maybe they also lack the sheer number of obsessive and nerdy males that the other veteran acts attract?

I think that's what it is. They have a different following than Journey. They are not a pop band, they are a rock band, but a lot of people don't know that I dont' think.

Yes -= that's true, Laura.

ANYWAY - I'ver had this debate a million times before. What I really want to know is...what's going on in Journey right now? What's with all the nudge nudge type comments and dark references throughout this thread?

Just the usual 'I'm an insider' spiel? Or is there some substance to the rumour-mongering? Have Journey decided against recording an album?
