Well all things considered, you are probably 150% correct brother Rick.

Neal's a great guitarist -- I've never disputed that. But I can't see getting excited about a tribute-band/cover-band singer fronting Journey in six months or whatever. What precisely are they supposed to do that's going to get me excited? "Hey guys! We're going to tour .... and! .... play another permutation of the Dirty Dozen! Instead of starting or ending the setlist with Separate Ways, this time we're going to put it in the middle!" Woo-hoo .... my heart be still.

And the chance of new music seems remote. So they can't promise a new CD.

Maybe Don't Stop Believin' will find its way (yawn) to yet another middling television series finale or light comedy/drama. Or maybe some sports team not-completely-juiced-up on amphetamines or steroids will adopt (yawn) Don't Stop Believin' as its theme song.

Anyway, Journey's getting to the point of having had as many ex-lead singers as Larry King has ex-wives.

Basta! Not me. Not another $$$. I didn't miss them in 8yrs of Augeri, but Jeff sparked new interest and I paid to see it and would have again.

Sticking strictly to the title of this thread, I must say Neal and Steve Lukather are GODS to me.

Even after reading so many bitter stories regarding what's happened lately.

Still, and IMHO, he should get rid of the Sustainer. I've mentioned earlier that I was watching the ESC4P3 DVD last night, and he sounds so CLEAN there.

Today, I can't understand his fast runs anymore. That's maybe caused by excessive distortion on his recent tone.

Anyway, one of the most moving solos I've ever heard was "The Star-Spangled Banner", in Tucson.

'03, if I'm not mistaken.

Sweetest tone I've heard so far. He was using his one-cutaway burgundy PRS and Diezel amps.

Im highly pissed about the JSS situation, as I saw them on this last tour, and have since become a fan of JSS. Ive seen Journey with Augeri as well, and preferred JSS. I think Journey missed an opportunity, and alienated many fans, but even after all the BS, I will always respect Neal as one of the greats all time. Journey and Neal Schon have had more of a musical influence on the music of now than most people give credit. Neal's solos rank right up there with the some of the best ever. I will always be a fan of Neal Schon regardless.

I feel the same way, they treated JSS shitty. But I am thankful they introduced him to a whole lot of new fans who bonded with him and will continue to follow his career. Silver linings aren't that hard to find.

When I say better, Im talkin about overall skills,,, not just speed, not just tapping, not just arppegios.

here's a few for now:

Alexi Lahi(Children Of Bodom)
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Yngwie Malmsteen
John Norum
John Petrucci
Mathias Eklund
Pontus Norgren
Vinnie Moore
Brian May
Tony McAlpine
Fredrik Akesson
Kuni
Gary Moore
Henrik Danhage(Evergrey)

All of the above guitar players can play anything Neal plays, but Neal can not play all that they have played.

I'm not that technical, I just enjoy soaring melodic guitars as well as dirty, chunky crunchy guitars and for my coin Neal's peerless at both of those brands.

He might not be a mozart in his complexities and sophistications compared to that list of mostly people I've never heard of but that is ok by me too.

You're definitely more versed in guitarists than I am, Behshad. I haven't even heard of several of those dudes. But guess what? I'd be willing to bet each one of those guys have former bandmates who were treated shitty by them (esp. Yngwie).

JMO but... If Neal could stop thinking with his EGO and his DICK, maybe he could get back to it being "about the music". I don't see that happening (especially if Perry's getting the lion's share of attention).

You got that right!:) Well most of them at least.
I think what bothers me the most about Neal is that once he reached to that certain level, he stopped. He has had the potentials and ability to be one of the best the last 20 years, but when you're just satisfied with where youre at and dont push your goals further, thats what puts him on a lower part of my list.

Exactly what I was thinking. The guy plays ALL THE TIME and has matured and is playing better than ever, in my opinion. Totally the opposite of Behshad's take on the guy. It can certainly be argued that he overdoes the shredding now but that's just a matter of taste. I think it's plainly obvious that he has improved his skills easily overall.

For the most part he IS playing better than ever, but I agree w/ SinJin, gotta stop the orgasmic endings of songs now and the shrill 1 note holding and bending all over the place forever particularly in his solos now like SSB (still like it) and even in some songs? Not feeling that. Totally different than his guitar solos on Captured and the Escape DVD.

i think ive got this neal thing down...........now , in 2007 hes really comfortable with his style and sound, he goes out and sometimes changes the solo , in the middle of the song and experiments for the fun of it.. this last tour some of his solos made the song brand new,, just incredible... but..........

in the old days,, say,, the live video from departure, you can tell hes on top of the game with all other guitar players,, he was perfect on every song,, and then coming up with solos like "line of fire"..that solo was thought out BIG!! crazy amazing.. .......................if a guy does play guitar,, then i suggest learnign the solo to Be Good To Youself,, i would have never ever thought of it ...

Better than ever!? Hardly. Has he played and recorded any new decent solo's!? he knew how to shred 20 years ago. He has always used lots of emotion when writting some of his signature solo's. You can not tell me that he is a better guitar player, just cause he adds more shred to the National Anthem song.
Take a look at where Vai/Satriani were 20 years ago and where they are now. They have developed completely and come a long way since then, Neal hasnt. He has not pushed the limit. He may has improved his way to play his old solo's, but he can not create better solo's than what he wrote decades ago.

Yes, better than ever. It's always been his melodicism and the subleties in his playing that place him above most other players. The melodic solos aren't as plentiful over the last few years but check out the subtle things he throws into the mix on TBF or any of the albums over the last few years. They are still there and better than ever, in my opinion.
