So it was basically all over by the time I figured out how great the band really is. And to be fair, I'm not a HUGE fan of Augeri's singing on either Arrival or Red13 (moreso 13 though).

Actually that's kind of interesting. I never thought someone would think Generations was their best album. But it takes all sorts u know.

Out of curiosity, what did u listen to before discovering Journey? I'm assuming ur old enough to have been around in the 80s.

Yeah, I wish I had seen Perry with the band on E5C4P3 or Frontiers. But, no, I had to catch them in their ROR freefall.

I almost didn't go. I was a long haired rocker back then. Almost embarrassed to tell my friends I was going to see Journey. That ROR phase was just a circus.

Departure, Evolution, and to a lesser degree Infinity. Love those early vocals and the mixture of Perry's and Rolie's voices.

First time I've head you say that. :? I thought you have Red13 posters all over your room?

Each one he got better. Maybe it was the way they recorded and/or mixed him. Arrival he has absolute standout vocals on only Nothing Comes Close as well as We Will Meet Again. KMS is an interesting lower register vocal as well and Neal singing with him the entire song extremely cool, there's no other song like that in the cannon.

But everything else on Arrival, he's just part of the songs, not bad not great. Red13 was a noticeable step up vocally and Generations was a quantam leap forward in his singing. Sounded more powerful and more assertive.

He's really agressive on the Generaitons rockers, too.

To answer Jrox, first favorite band was Genesis, then it was VH, THEN it became Journey. I always LIKED Journey though, once I heard AWYWI in 1980 over the Elkins Park Middle School PA... now I pretty much have a 1 and 1a of Journey and The Stones, then everybody else I like.

To address DaveCT's bashing ( :P) of the title track to Frontiers: I LOVE that song, to me that and Rubicon are sort of like 1 nearly seamless piece of music closing out the album. damn I love those songs....I will be playing my 1 Frontiers era boot this weekend now.

TBF by far. More soul on that album than any other for me. That album took 40 something years for these guys to write. All that living and learning and growing. And I think it was probably a pretty organic experience. I think Arrival is just the opposite. As calculated as you can get, but misses the mark by a mile. Generations was a complete mess to me. Escape is a great album, but have just heard it too many times. A little too polished for my tastes these days.

I became a fan with Evolution, so that sort of holds a special place. I really like all Perry-era stuff and just bits of post Perry.

My guess though - if the band had not of screwed up so badly recently, I think their next album would have ranked high with me. But they blew it. Their next album won't do too much for me because it will just be a re-release of the dirty dozen. Journey Gold. Followed by Journey - All the Best. Then Journey - Remember When....

So hard to choose... I'm honestly a fan of all the eras. I'll just pick Infinity since the Winds of March guitar/organ duel is kicking my ass right now :)
I seriously think there's quite a lot to remember about every Journey album, from the self-titled to Generations.

ROR/TBF toss up. I think ROR is Steve's vocal masterpiece and TBF is Journey's musical and lyrical masterpiece. I'm a much bigger fan of the mature, soulful Perry than the early stratospheric vocal gymnastics, as impressive as they were.

Woops! I didn't explain why....

ALL of Journey's albums are brilliant, but there's something about Roy Thomas Baker putting his hand on the production I can't like in its entirety. Perhaps the drum sound, or the excessive hiss.

Escape is a PERFECT record. It had all the right elements, including timing.

Arrival shows the band in an obviously HUNGRY stage. Maybe due to Perry's saying on it, but TBF is half-assed at best, compared to Arrival.

There are two words that prevent Arrival from perfection: STEVE SMITH.

All of the above, as usual, is OPINION.

I totally love KMS too so we'll agree again (damn!).

Question: did u also like the non-Augeri songs on Gens? U seem to address HIS singing but that was only a part of it.

Oh, yes to me the whole record is a symphony so I love things about every song. Even Gone Crazy w/ Ross' gritty Billy Gibbons delivery. Neal's vox are what they are, sort of by numbers but suprisingly decent.
And Castronovo's vox are probly as good as Augeri's on the album. That's not damning either guy, btw.

Well Joe, I guess there are some things we'll never agree on. :-( I was never so disappointed as when I first gave that disc a spin. After a few listens, ABL grew on me. The rest got shittier & shittier.

But thank u for ur explanation. We all hear different things in music :-)

You have perfectly described the reasons why I also love TBF so much.Maybe it wasn't written in the usual Journey style, but let's not forget the circumstances and the experiences of the songwriters.A beautiful album all in all.

The question of this topic will always baffle me.I guess I'll never be able to say which is my favorite Journey album.
However, being the PerryZany that I am (Loon is obsolete, gotta refresh the terminology  ) I'm a bit reserved when it comes to post-Perry albums, although Arrival is one of the CDs that gets a fair share of spins,as well as a few songs from Generations.
No matter how much I love the Perry era,I can appreciate the great songwriting and some of the excellent renditions of Augeri & Co.

Too bad we didn't get a JSS fronted Journey album.I bet it would have ranked high in our collection.

Frontiers is the best!

Postby lidobar » Sat Jun 30, 2007 8:19 am

It really is a tough choice from Infinity through Raised on Radio. It's all good. Even Arrival was pretty good. However, I'd have to say FRONTIERS was the BEST album. All the songs were stellar with great hooks that stay in your mind. They were at the height of their game in the Frontiers era and they sounded so good. Afterwards, it was downhill from there.

The first 3 pre-Perry records were good in a different sort of way. They are very listenable to but had too few vocals to really appeal to a commerical audience. Frontiers was very engaging with big commercial appeal.

I liked Infinity for Perry's vocals alone because there was a pureness, sincerity and simplicity about the music. Departure, Evolution, Escape were good but there were some songs that I disliked. Frontiers was the first album that I really liked all the songs.

ROR and TBF grow on you after repeated listenings but Perry's voice is so scratcy by TBF that it's unpleasant to hear. Post-perry I would say Arrival was much better than Generations and Red 13.

Side 2 of Frontiers is badass (cept for BT).

Niggy - I STILL rave about the "back side" or side 2 of Frontiers. It is awesome! I like BT (the SONG-especially after a hard day with elementary school children) and Frontiers.

I would have to say that Frontiers is my favorite album, closely followed by Escape. My reasons are similar to all the others that have already posted.
