JSS singing Faith in the Heartland - video

Postby AR » Thu Jul 05, 2007 5:07 am

Ok this one has a lot of obstructions and is not the best of quality. However if you are patient, you will see some decent footage. From JSS's 2nd night ever with the Frig and Fro's in Virginia Beach - Faith in the Heartland (not quite complete - missing the last few seconds - I need a better DVD ripper)

My thoughts are that JSS covered Augeri "passable" for only the 2nd night, have to give him credit for the fast takeover. That being said, he bailed on some of the tough parts, including the beginning Augeri "Yeah.....", used Dean for others, and they used Augeri backing vocals mixed in (which I have to say made the song).

I know that this will piss some people off, but truth be told.... bottom line to me is that while Augeri never measured up to Perry in form/vocal strength, he did "fit" Journey vocals very well. JSS is simply a very good singer that never "fit" the Journey vocal style that has sold 70 million records, thus Schon recruiting him into the band was a mistake from day 1. I don't think Augeri will ever return to this bunch of clows, even if his voice is healthy and he gets the chance.

Schon needs to get Rollie and Perry back in the studio, keeping Deen or bringing Smitty back. Otherwise this band is on it's last legs.

I don't personally see how any artist would want to stagnate trying to imitate and recreate what they'd already done in the past, rather than take a chance and move in a different direction. That's what pisses me off about this whole ordeal. Journey had a massive opportunity to explore new musical avenues and dropped it. So what if Jeff didn't sound like Augeri or Perry? He brought an edge and some much-needed soul to Journey and his input and creativity could've kept them going for a few more years. Now that Jeff's out, I don't see Journey lasting much longer at all. I'll support them if Jeremey gets the gig and try out any new music, but Jeff was the best option Journey could've taken.

Songs like FITH were perfect for Jeff. Good performance.

This post is meant to do nothing but cause trouble. JSS is 10x the singer/performer Augeri is. Augeri couldn't carry Jeff's jock strap.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Thanky you, Larry! I get tired of all of the comparing....every singer, whether it's SP, Augeri, or JSS brings something different to the table and I would much prefer seeing someone put their own style into a song instead of trying to emulate the original singer, and yes, sometimes it is nice to just enjoy the music as opposed to over-analyzing and picking it to shreds.

I don't think Augeri tried to be Perry at all to be honest. Some people make it out to be that all Augeri did was watch tape on Perry , took notes, studied and wanted to be JUST LIKE HIM. I think SA was just being SA. Everyone always says he was too much like Perry, but some people forget that's what the whole point was. When people hack on JSS, it's that he doesn't sound like Perry.

SP has this band by the balls.

Other than the very first time I saw Journey live with Augeri, in November '98, I never thought he sounded like Perry or even tried to sound like him. His tone was different. His inflections were different. Totally different delivery. Just nothing similar except both guys are named Steve, have a long "e" sound at the end of their last name, and have an extremely slight resemblance to each other.

I can't believe they canned this guy...voice, looks, style, stage presence...

PS I think its notable that in the early shows it looks like Jeff sported the leather pants and button down look similar to Augeri but then seemed to find his own style in cool tees and jeans.

Sorry my timing isn't right, and thanks for posting the video, but I beg to differ that SA never sang it live you fellow stupid fuck  I have a video of him singing it live, no question about it, different inflections, etc. And he kicked ass on it. He had plenty of bad nights, but had some really killer nights too.

I wish the best to both JSS and SA. They are better off out of this mess of a band at this point. They have certainly, in Perry's words, "cracked the stone". Perry gets the last laugh...and all the way to the bank.

Thanks Ed, you rock.

This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but I think that sounded better than Augeri's studio recording of the song.

What the fuck were they thinking of when they let this amazing singer/performer go? Too amazing I guess, overshadowed the Schon midget.

You do realize most of us here genuinely like Steve Augeri and wish nothing but for him to succeed, don't you?
Stop prodding what is a sore point for so many.
There is a reason why Andrew upholds his journalistic ethos and closes/deletes factually inaccurate threads in a moments notice.
The multiple Steve Augeri lipsynching threads that once densely populated this board were not one of those instances.
And, as Deano and others have clarified, the tape used for FITH is different than the studio take.
Go ahead and post the clip if you wish to heap further shame upon a very nice man.
