Just what the forum needs. Three threads on Jonathan Cain's coat in 1986....

Susie. Please come down from whatever hypomanic state you're in and slowly return to reality.

The smock has no arms and pockets running across the belly. It also has a very narrow lapel. And the smock comes down to the waist.

The coat has long sleeves and no pockets running across the belly. It has a much wider lapel - like that of a coat or jacket. And it comes down to the ankles.

Look again at the two pictures. Am I wrong?

I still haven't seen ur 2 examples buddy. Sorry.

Thanks Raiderfan. And you're right - we have had a few storming arguments in the past. In fact, I think my very first argument on MR was with you. I think you were saying that we needed to nuke the Palestinians or something... :)

Yep & u used it earlier in this thread in relation to Foreigner's most popular song. Did u forget that? This is ur 2nd usage & at this point, it's old & over-used.

Glad to see u get SO much mileage out of my material tho.

It wasn't your material. It was us laughing at your ridiculous posts. You are the material!!!!

And it doesn't look like Jonathan Cain's coat either.

Here's another w/out lapels or buttons (which u previously said was how a hairdresser's smock should look but u have now backed down on that theory):

Oh Susie...this really is getting tiresome. I posted the picture of the hairdresser's smock to show what a hairdresser's smock looks like. And it still looks like a hairdresser's smock BECAUSE IT IS ONE. And it looks different to the OTHER PICTURE which is of Jonathan Cain in his COAT.

There are only two pictures, Susie. How hard can it be?

Here's another that is ankle-length:

Nor this. But thanks for giving us the full smock range

To further prove my point: In that same video, what do u call the "coat" Perry is wearing?

I believe it's called a "tailcoat". Or simply "a coat".

Perry himself has admitted (in some interview, don't ask me to find it) that he was watching an old Fred Astaire movie & had the idea that a top coat would look great w/jeans. He then had one custom designed for his stage act that has MUCH longer tails than usual & had a lining fit to absorb perspiration. It's still considered a top coat, however, right? But it is slightly different than the ones usually worn by Mr. Astaire in his movies.

Please tell me u understand that although u haven't found an exact picture of a hairdresser's smock that looks absolutely identical to the one Friga wore in the 80s (most likely b/c that WAS 21 yrs ago), it is still called a hairdresser's smock.

Well, I wasn't expecting Fred Astaire to suddenly make an appearence in this thread....

Okay Susie. Let me explain:

A coat with tails is a coat with tails - no matter how long or short the tail is.

A hairdresser's smock is a hairdresser's smock - which isn't a coat.

And - as far as we know - Jonathan Cain didn't have the idea that a hairdresser's smock would look great with jeans and nor did he have one custom-designed to turn it into a smock that is shaped exactly like an ankle-length coat.

Are you with me so far?

I'm with u every step of the way here.

Perry's coat w/tails is still a coat w/tails even tho it's not like any coat w/tails that ever came before. By that argument, Friga's smock on the ROR tour is a SMOCK even if it isn't exactly like any of the 3 hairdresser's smocks I posted pictures of. It still looks like a smock & it sure isnt a coat.

Now to confuse u further, in another thread, Dave thought the picture of the smock u posted was a coat, just like Friga's. Hmm.

What one person sees as a coat, another sees as a smock. Where do we draw the line?

It's that agree to disagree thing. That usually ends arguments well. ;)

I see. So Jonathan Cain is not wearing a coat. He he wearing A SMOCK THAT HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. And THAT'S why we can't recognise it as a smock....even though it does look like a smock...so it is like a smock we've seen before, after all.

Glad we cleared that up...

Now to confuse u further, in another thread, Dave thought the picture of the smock u posted was a coat, just like Friga's. Hmm.

Dave was clear that he thought the pictures of the coat and the smock looked totally different. I'm afraid you are the one who has been consistently baffled by these two simple images....

What one person sees as a coat, another sees as a smock. Where do we draw the line?

Whoah...you ought to put that in your Deep Thoughts book.

What's going on around here? I'm gone for 2 weeks and the only thing to read when I come back is a debate about coat or smock? I haven't caught up yet but I say lab coat.

I think Matty & I should end on this note. To me, it's a smock. To him, it's a coat. To me, Friga is an asshole. To him, he's a God. We'll never agree.

There's nothing wrong with differing opinions, that's actually a great thing. Now both of you kiss and make up. :D
