Hugo is awesome!

Postby ArnelRox » Sat Jul 28, 2007 6:05 am

I know there's been a few threads about Hugo lately & it's all good stuff. I just had the opportunity to listen to several of his original albums (courtesy of a very nice lady -- thanks) & I'm blown away by the talent. What an awesome voice! He can sure pen a tune too. My husband who rarely comments on much music asked me who the heck that was & said "Wow he's great. He really soars." It's true. His voice goes waaaaay up & it's extremely pleasant to the old ears. Beautiful tone.

What amazes me is that this guy never had a chance to make it big time. He's got the looks, the voice, the songwriting abilities. What a shame! He should have been a HUGE star. Sure is nice to discover his music right now for me though. I'm really enjoying it. Now I really need to get my butt to NYC to see Evolution.

I can't wait for the new album w/Josh & Eric! Hurry up boys. Ur fans are waiting!

I agree 100%, have you heard "Fire in the Night"? The song "Just so you Know" should be on the radio, I also can't wait for the Hogo Ramos CD.
And yes you HAVE to see EVOLUTION, you won't believe it!!

In a way, I think that constant comparisons with Steve Perry were more curse than blessing to Hugo.

He did enjoy a bit of success at the beginning with Valentine, when Perry-comparisons weren't so frequent, but most of wider fame ended with rise of grunge...

Later he became victim of constant debates between Journey fans on internet... some were thrashing him due loyality to Steve Perry's memory, some were loyal to Steve Augeri, some were loyal to JSS... some still think he lacks soul, energy or something in his voice...

I feel kinda sorry for the guy because I think he doesn't deserve being flamed without any guilt of his own... he seems to be nice guy, have great voice, makes very likeable Journey-style AOR music, and makes very good Journey/Steve Perry tribute show...

Beautiful song. He could release that one today. It's so much better than most of the crap in the charts. Makes u mad that he's not on the radio, huh? How was he overlooked? Yeah I know, grunge & all that shit. What a crying shame. Makes me wonder how many other awesome bands are out there I never even heard of!

There are so many of these songs I really like. I could listen to them over & over. Actually, I will :-)

I love all the ballads on all his CD's, he is so talented and I had the pleasure to shake his hand after an Evolution show.
He is such a nice person

My favorite by far is "Blues for you", from his "Time on earth"cd. It's probably his closest attempt to the Journey sound. He hits some high-ass notes (although they're falsetto) also! Very cool, bluesy song!

There are plenty of such groups/songs like that in the melodic/AOR world....but MOST people are too narrow-minded to get beyond the typical, Stones, Who, Kiss, Aerosmith, Ozzy, CSNY, Boston, Styx....etc....etc....etc.......references.

I've been collecting Melodic Rock and AOR cds for close to 20 years now. I'd be happy to let folks sample anything I own.... 8)

Is that off of the Valentine cd? I don't remember that one...I guess it could be off of the new album too. Those are the only two I don't have.

I don't know much about Hugo, so I'll preface my comments with that fact. That said, every time I have ever seen Hugo on the web, he seems to pre-occupied with trying to be Steve Perry! That may have something to do with the fact that he's never made it in the music industry! I think above all else, the music industry prefers people to have their own persona, and not make the concerted effort this guy seemingly makes to dress like someone else! I've always been weirded out by the guy, singing ability notwithstanding! Unfortanutely, when your "act" is what his act is...it sort of distracts people from listening to the voice!

Well John, you are right you don't know much about Hugo, the videos you have seen on youtube is an act for his very successful tribute band Evolution, if you ever have a chance to see them you wouldn't be disappointed.
Hugo is a popular AOR vocalist and has released several solo CD's also with the band Valebtine and Open Skyz and soon to be released album with Josh Ramos. So don't classify him as a just a tribute singer trying to act like someone else, he has a vast catalog of his own material that you should take a listen to.

For what it's worth...you come across rather smug. For the record, I wasn't "classifying" Hugo as anything. I think most who know of him, know of him because of his "tribute act". I stand by my comment...The guy simply weirds me out, and always has! If I were Perry, I'd find the guy's entire act disturbing! Again, I'm not speaking of his solo work, because I simply have no desire to listen to it. I'm speaking him acting and dressing like Perry!

Don't mean to be smug, but if he creeps you out so much and you have not even listen to his solo stuff why would you come on this tread "Hugo is awsome"?
Have you ever seen him live with Evolution?

To answer your questions....I came into this thread because I felt like coming into it!!!! Also, I'm not really the cheerleader type. All threads should have differing viewpoints and balance, and that's what I was offering! As for seeing him live...It's not something I have any interest in doing. Tribute bands have their place and have a right to make a living, just like the rest of us. I just don't care for his act and actually find it to be distasteful!

John, ur judging him solely from his Evolution work. Check this out from his own work please before u finish forming an opinion:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IfmeOdxNJbU

He's not trying to be anything but himself in that video. Yet, his voice is still similar to Perry.

You bet your ass it is Lar. That is Adam Holland and the dude FUCKIN ROCKS. He and Schon are the reasons I started playing. Adam rocks a bit harder than Schon though. Holland is very under rated. I was surprised to see Hugo hook up with Josh when Adam is already there. I like Adam better than Ramos.

Ramos has an album in the works and Hugo is going to sing lead on it. It was originally a solo Ramos album but has been renamed the Ramos/Hugo project (or something like that). Word is most if not all the instrumentals are complete and the ball is in Hugo's court on putting lyrics and melodies to the music. Should be a kick ass album.
