"Porn Surfer" for visiting MR.com

Postby Wheels Of Fyre » Sun Sep 16, 2007 2:54 am

Yesterday I was disciplined by my employer for abusing internet privileges. Admittedly, I was probably online too much however I can honestly say that I've never permitted the quality and quantity of my work to be affected. Ultimately, it doesn't matter as our internal reports say "too much internet". It also states that I've been visiting/viewing adult websites  .

When I heard this my initial thought was that the report was mistaken or that someone was messing with me. My manager mentioned one of the sites that I supposedly visited: "www.lovegirlz".

Never heard of it. Never visited it. Or had I? As we continued discussion the thought of "lovegirlz" kept ringing in my head. I then had an epiphany. I recalled that Saint John's avatar had never loaded while browsing MR.com on my work pc. It would however load on my home pc. I always thought that to be odd. It made me wonder if certain graphics that were linked FROM MR.com TO certain sites were making it appear that I was visiting those sites.

I went home after work - thankful that I still had a job but upset that I was labeled "Porn Surfer". I immediately came here to check out Saint John's avatar. I right-clicked it to see its address and wouldn't you know it. I was right:
Image

So there you have it. Saint John's avatar has made me a porn surfer at work.

Andrew has always said, "This is YOUR site - it is what you lot make of it." This entices people to use adult graphics for avatars and signatures. Well, a few months ago myself and a couple others expressed that we didn't want to see that stuff - that this is a JOURNEY board and that we view it from work and don't need to have graphics of women's breasts bouncing around our work monitors. The response was to STFU. Andrew in his wisdom saw that it was a reasonable request and helped get things cleaned up. Unfortunately, in my case it just isn't clean enough.

MR.com is NOT an adult site however allowing links to REAL adult sites makes MR.com adult by association. And now I'm a porn surfer by association. Very disappointing. My record has been tarnished and any hope of a decent pay increase is certain to have been dashed. I really have no one to blame but myself however I can't help but be irked by all of it.

The games began long before I ever joined this forum.

That's AWEFUL!! Did you explain it to them?!

It sounds like your employer isn't being fair. Couldn't this have happened on any website with pictures that could have been linked from other websites? Who knows when you look at any website where the photos are uploaded from. I wouldn't have had a clue about that unless you pointed it out. Which I am glad you did, by the way!! I wonder if other places pick up stuff like that and this could happen to someone else. (hopefully not)

Hi, Wendy. Thanks for the concern.

My manager considered my explanation because there's trust between us however I was disciplined by corporate and our HR person probably thought he was hearing the same old line of denials that he's probably heard a thousand times.

I did send my manager all of this info/confirmation yesterday but ultimately, I've been "sucker punched" by the links and promptly labeled "Porn Surfer". Not much of a chance ever of clearing that.

Well I hope they look up the "porn" you have been looking at and re-think what they are doing! That is ridiculous! Hang in there!

Thanks. I hope they look at it, too but I'm not so sure that I would if I were an employer. Think about it. You have an employee who's browsing a site that links to an adult site. You're not obligated to care about all of the reasoning - all you know and care about is that your system is accessing "offensive" sites AND the person who's behind it is thereby a "Porn Surfer".

I can't blame them for looking at it that way although I'd like to see my disciplinary paperwork clarified to say something along the lines of: "It's understood that you were not knowlingly visiting adult content sites however it needs to be clear that sites that link to adult content sites are also considered as such and are a violation of our computer policies."

I think that would be fair. As it stands it reads that I've been viewing objectionable sites. Nice.

While it's true that SJ is a real pain in the neck ultimately, I made a mistake viewing this site from my work pc. I thought it was harmless but obviously I was wrong. Didn't see it coming.

Thanks, Larry! My boss is actually a pretty good guy - he knows what's up but I've been disciplined by corporate which goes beyond his control.

You're absoluetly right about the I.T.'s. I'm sure they saw the temp file and it was flagged. No investigation - just knee-jerk reaction.

It was funny because I told HR that I would simply ask for my privileges to be revoked. He said that he thought that that was "drastic". Well, if I happen to visit another site in the future that has some peculiar link to an adult site I WILL lose my job and I mean NOW. So why shouldn't I want to do something drastic in order to preserve my job and family's well-being?

Come Monday it's going to be cut and I'll not have to worry about it. I'll just come here on weekends and be a weekend pisser.

That's part of the reason I wanted to share this - to warn others.

There was another site mentioned to me as well but I can't think of it. I'm sure it was a linked from here, too as I know my browsing history.

Warning! Warning, Will Robinson!!!

That's why it's best to take pictures you find and not "hotlink" them, but roght click and save them. Then upload them to imageshack or photobucket.

I must admit that sometimes I'm lazy and don't do this. Believe it or not, I think Fyre raises a good, valid point.

I think that's exactly why I still have my job - for the moment anyway - never know how things eventually end.

I'd check usage if I was an employer. It makes sense. You don't want your systems to be compromised by someone visiting a site that maybe opens the door for a virus or hacker.

Employers have every right to monitor what you do with their equipment on their time.

What the fuck is wrong with you stupid asses?

The avatar in question, St Johns is a picture of none other than Andrea Corr from the Irish pop band the Corrs. You all know how I pimp that band and especially that woman. She was voted world's most beautiful woman.

A lot of you spend more time on MR than you do working. I think it's hilarious when Andrew states that traffic DROPS on weekends(days off) versus the work week. By the way, I am not bashing you who do fuck off at work, just sayin' I find it funny. if these cubicle employers want you off the Net, they should disable the fucker, no?

Go tell your boss to fuck himself. Either fight for yourself or stay the Hell off the internet. Like Barb said, if you do a good job, it shouldn't mater anyway.

Great...
that is seriously a drag. People really should not link their avatars from other sources. If you like it, copy it and post it somewhere that you know is not a problematic site. Not that anybody would even think this would be a problem. Stupid. This really sucks. In the kneejerk corporate world, nobody cares about real details. All they see is "possible lawsuit" and flip out. If you show your boss, they most likely won't give a crap about the explanation.
That means that all of us are at risk who visit from their jobs, which I definitely do.
Guess that will stop now, too bad. :(

Deano, I think your assumption that "you people who spend more time on the internet than working" is not really valid. It's just a filler kind of deal and not what the job has turned into. I do agree with you though that if employers don't want their employees on the web, then get it off my desk! It's like, "Hey, here's a nice juicy hamburger, shake and fries. I'll put it on your desk. Don't eat it. Even if you've already eaten everything else. Don't eat it."
It seriously blows that because a graphic is hosted on a porn site that it shows up as someone visiting a porn site. I'm a web guy and I never even thought of that.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
