my son and daughter are in a college program that let them start college courses at there Jr. year...my son graduated high school at the college and will have his A.A degree by the end of his freshman year! and the High school paid for it!

If I hadn't bothered to look at the location, I would have started in on my boyo for setting up an account here without me knowing about it! He's also 16, taking a load of AP classes, but a major Jeff fan (now that we've had the pleasure of seeing him for ourselves).

And with Jeff - I was actually excited about Jrny again. His stage presence and his versions of the songs were second only to Perry's, in my book. I'll take great performances over great sound alike any time.

But nothing I've seen or heard from JSS -- live or otherwise -- has led me to believe that he could tackle Steve Perry's more demanding catalogue and higher registers.

Steve Perry was a vocal acrobat in his early Journey days. Jeff, like most singers, couldn't sniff his upper register on certain songs. Not his or anyone else's fault. God chose to give Steve Perry those one in a billion pipes.

First off, great post. Agree or not agree, great post!

Second, given your age I'm seriously impressed with your taste and level of knowledge in this genre of music. Kudos!

Regarding your post, I think you offer a simplified comparison dynamic....throwing in the word 'technically' narrows the comparison down to voice only. And I do agree that Arnel is much closer to Perry then JSS or SA by far.

There's also stage presence, which I'd tip my hat to JSS over SA

Then there's the X factor...be it singing with emotion, soul, delivery, etc....this is where Perry becomes untouchable in his own signature way. He set the bar so high, that in affect he laid down a barrier-to-entry. And for the folks who haven't had the good fortune of seeing him live, I'll never get over how incredible he was. It was just something I've never seen before. His voice was a gift from a higher power. Being able to one-up his studio recordings in a live setting blew me away. And I've seen some incredible performers, including the late Freddie Mercury. Obviously he too was untouchable in his own right.

To me, Journey's path has an extremely difficult fork in the road. Do you get the best Perry sound alike and play the hits? Or do you perform Act II and take it in a different direction.

I don't have the answer...simply just saying what comes to mind.

Augeri had 'nice' stage presence, but JSS ruled the stage (imho). JSS & Perry were similiar in that, it almost commanded that you pay attention to them. With Augeri, I never had a problem paying attention to others in the band.

Perhaps... I've hit on something here.
