Perry's Somethin' to Hide? I thought Fleischmann was singing that song live before Perry ever joined the band?

Politics and theater? Umm... Would you consider singing for Journey? :P

Welcome, SM, and glad to have you here! I especially like to meet 2nd generation fans, or people who got into their music because of their parents. My 3.5 year old is getting quite the education herself, and always says, "LOUD, Daddy.... I wanna hear it LOUD!" :P

You can get a year of college under your belt by the time you graduate high school taking the AP courses. That's what my son's working on. What are you going to major in? Just curious. :D Good first post, BTW.
my son and daughter are in a college program that let them start college courses at there Jr. year...my son graduated high school at the college and will have his A.A degree by the end of his freshman year! and the High school paid for it!

This was a joke as notated by the emote, and you'll excuse me if I react to your attempts to bait me with conflicting responses. I find them both laughable and sad that you'd go out of your way to argue with a 16-year-old who simply disagrees with you on a subject, who has not attacked the object of your obsession, and who continues to try to be respectful of you.

As a teenager, my patience has limits (though they're clearly well in excess of yours). For the final time: please cease with the defensive behavior. It's unnecessary.

Edit: Oh, and just for kicks, I will point out to you that the closest I've come to 'attacking' you would be now. And I don't intend to go away. The only thing that will happen from here is, if you continue to harrass me with boundless accusations and hostile behavior, I'll inevitably return the favor, and things will get really ugly. We teens have a flair and tendancy for tenacious vindictiveness that cannot be matched.

I won't be.

And as for me not knowing this forum, I must confess I'm new, so I have to get used to things. But I've read this forum for months since JSS left.

Anyways, I'll be off now. Again, if there are doubts about my age, the "www" link at the bottom of my profile will link you to my Myspace. Feel free to add.

My feelings exactly. Never could figure out the obsession some have with how high someone can sing. The later Journey & SP solo material reaches me in a way that the earlier recordings do not.

In other words, you would fire Perry himself, right, lol.
bc even HE can't hit those high notes anymore. :P

And I'd still rather hear him sing the songs than anyone else, even if they could hit those notes.

And with Jeff - I was actually excited about Jrny again. His stage presence and his versions of the songs were second only to Perry's, in my book. I'll take great performances over great sound alike any time.

Steve Perry was a vocal acrobat in his early Journey days. Jeff, like most singers, couldn't sniff his upper register on certain songs. Not his or anyone else's fault. God chose to give Steve Perry those one in a billion pipes.

StrangeMedicine

First off, great post. Agree or not agree, great post!

Second, given your age I'm seriously impressed with your taste and level of knowledge in this genre of music. Kudos!

Regarding your post, I think you offer a simplified comparison dynamic....throwing in the word 'technically' narrows the comparison down to voice only. And I do agree that Arnel is much closer to Perry then JSS or SA by far.

There's also stage presence, which I'd tip my hat to JSS over SA

Then there's the X factor...be it singing with emotion, soul, delivery, etc....this is where Perry becomes untouchable in his own signature way. He set the bar so high, that in affect he laid down a barrier-to-entry. And for the folks who haven't had the good fortune of seeing him live, I'll never get over how incredible he was. It was just something I've never seen before. His voice was a gift from a higher power. Being able to one-up his studio recordings in a live setting blew me away. And I've seen some incredible performers, including the late Freddie Mercury. Obviously he too was untouchable in his own right.

To me, Journey's path has an extremely difficult fork in the road. Do you get the best Perry sound alike and play the hits? Or do you perform Act II and take it in a different direction.

I don't have the answer...simply just saying what comes to mind.

Cheers all...

Agree +100....Believe it or not, I think Journey was more comfortable with Steve Augeri's stage presence than with Jeff's.

Augeri had 'nice' stage presence, but JSS ruled the stage (imho). JSS & Perry were similiar in that, it almost commanded that you pay attention to them. With Augeri, I never had a problem paying attention to others in the band.

Perhaps... I've hit on something here.
