They were absolutely brilliant.

One of the major problems are these idiot environmentalists who have made it nearly impossible to clear out the undergrowth in these forests, which is what fuels a lot of these fires and makes it more difficult to contain when they do start because this stuff catches fire much more easily than the actual trees and plants.

Same thing was happening here - fire trails and back burning fuel reduction was being over turned by enviromental groups....that was until 500 houses were lost in 2 hours in Canberra a few years back.
Now we are starting to get back on top of these things, as Aussie is the absolutely home of bushfires. For example....summer is still officially one week away and already in Tasmania there are 17 fires burning around the state. It will be another long summer coming up.

It certainly doesn't help having the native tree of the country filled with flamible oil!

Andrew, I love you but your spelling is pure shit. I am going to get you a spell check for your computer. It's FLAMMABLE.

And one thing, make that two, 1) fires aren't the least bit "funny" and 2), Australia is second to Southern California in fire country.

Are you quite certain of that Dean'o?
I would have guessed the land of Aussie's as being
the flamingest place to live.
I don't envy either of you, my home and native land may get cold
white and wet but you don't often hear of brushfire in Ontario.

1) I was rushing...and no argument from me...my old man was in the fire service more than 20 years. No laughing matter.

2) AU is undisputed #1 mate...seriosuly. We're a whole country as opposed to California the state. Every city in this country has the scars of fires past.

If Australia is like the U.S. then the environmental groups are planted on the left, which you have so gleely voted back in.

BTW - a couple of Fire articles:

More than 50 people are killed as bushfires ravage south-eastern Tasmania. (1967)

The bushfires that raged through south-eastern Tasmania on 7 February 1967 were among the most disastrous ever faced by Australia. Despite their courage, it was nearly impossible for firefighters to control the fires because the temperature was so high, there were very strong winds, and the terrain was very dry. Winds that reached 80 km an hour fanned flames straight down Mount Wellington and to within 2 km of the centre of Hobart. At the peak of the disaster, hot winds blew many of the fires together into massive fires that destroyed everything they touched. In some places the temperature was so high that the bitumen on the road melted and burst into flame. At Middleton nearly 40 people just survived the fire by standing in the sea around a small boat where pregnant women and small children sat – the fire even burnt the seaweed on the beach and at the edge of the water. The fires killed 62 people and injured hundreds more, as well as killing 1400 cattle, 50,000 sheep, 25,000 poultry and 900 pigs. At least 1400 buildings and 1500 cars were also destroyed, with overall losses costing about $40 million.

Bushfires are different from controlled burning. Indigenous communities have used fire as a hunting and farming tool to assist with regeneration. Indigenous Australians used controlled burning and fire management to encourage the growth of new plants and to prevent the growth of long grass which contributes to the tinder or fuel for bushfires.

Fire management also allowed animals to escape, although some were lost to hunters. Eucalypts, for example, require occasional burns to regenerate. Fire stick farming used over tens of thousands of years created the fertile grazing plains west of the Blue Mountains. Long periods of dry, hot weather and natural vegetation that burns easily makes Australia particularly vulnerable to bushfire.

Australian bushfires can be particularly severe as eucalyptus trees contain large amounts of oil which can burn very fast and very hot. Other human management factors which have contributed to the severity of bushfires include high fuel loads, a change from fire prevention to fire fighting measures and not building adequate buffer zones to protect built assets (Nairn Inquiry, 2003). As Australians learn to understand more about bushfires, bushfire prevention strategies are being adopted.

The 1967 Tasmanian fires
In 1967 southern Australian was experiencing drought conditions. On 7 February, 264,270 hectares were burnt in southern Tasmania in just five hours. Of the 110 fires burning that morning, the worst was the Hobart fire. The fire made its way over Mt Wellington and encroached on the city's western suburbs. Sixty-two people died, and 1,400 homes and other buildings were destroyed. At the time, it was the largest loss of life and property in Australia from fire on any single day in Australia's history.

The Ash Wednesday bushfires, 1983
In the summer of 1983, conditions in Victoria and South Australia contributed to extremely high ignition levels. Drought conditions with a heatwave with temperatures of 43 degrees Celsius meant that forests were highly combustible. On Wednesday 16 February (now known as 'Ash Wednesday'), around 180 bushfires were burning across both states, the largest of them starting in Victoria. Of significance was that out of the Ash Wednesday fires Victorian rescue teams were reorganised to better fight future fires, through improved radio networks, single command centres and linkages between established rural and city firefighters.

Canberra, 2003
In mid-January 2003, extreme weather conditions led to multiple outbreaks of fire in Namadgi National Park to the south of Canberra. Strong winds pushed the fires into forested areas adjoining Canberra and on the afternoon of Saturday 18 January, firestorms fanned by high winds hit Canberra suburbs. Thousands of hectares of forest and park lands were burnt out.

Drew, ask Treetopovoska or whatever the Hell her name is  , Indie Joe, JSS or even Cyndy or Lora. California is on fire every fucking year. Hell, this year, Soto's crib was dangerously close to infernos. Perhaps there is so much concrete and asphalt here, that a lot of houses can't burn, versus you outback croc eating wild wooded dumbfucks have bushs and briar patches that fuel these fires.

I wasn't going to pull the Canada card but since you brought it up.....

I meant "left" in the sense of the American political system. Left as in Hillary..right as in Hannity. Hillary is better than Hannity..that was my point..

On to Canada. Make fun of that place all you want. BUT...

Their crime rate is lower
Their economy is great
Their environment is awesome
Their dollar is worth more than the US dollar.

Canada rules.

PS. They don't have George Bush up there either.

Rockindeano wrote:Their crime rate is lower

Have you seen the list of highest crime rates in America that was just recently released. I believe Detroit (liberal stronghold) was #1 and my hometown of Flint (also no republicans to be found) was #3. I know Flint and Detroit are fond of cutting the Police force in favor of funding social handout programs. I'd venture a guess that most highcrime areas are liberal utopias.
Rockindeano wrote:Their economy is great

The economy is pretty awesome here as well. Record low unemployment, pretty low inflation. All while fighting terrorists.
Rockindeano wrote:Their environment is awesome

Our environment is pretty awesome too, as long as you steer clear of places like Detroit and Flint.
