Live vs. Studio

Just curious what other peoples opinions are on live vs. studio. Is there certain Journey songs you much prefer live than the studio version or is there live songs you've heard that just can't come close to the studio version?

There is quite a bit of Perry-era Journey that once I have heard it live has won me over the studio version. Here's a few and will add more as I think of them. Lovin Touchin Squeezin IMO comes across much better live than studio, has more of a bluesy/sexy swagger when played live. DayDream is another one that sold me over studio version. And surprisingly Perry's Stand Up Before It's Too Late from FTLOSM was one I could take or leave until I heard it live, love it much better live.

Only the Young is one that I don't think I've ever heard a live version come close to the studio version.

Most of them are better live, imo.
In fact, I listen to jrny everyday, but i can't remember the last time i listened to a studio version, lol. (probably tbf stuff, for obvious reasons )

Only the young, ask the lonely, faithfully, are a few that are perfect on the studio versions

some studio versions that i hate, but love live versions of:

lady luck, can do, la do da, wheel in the sky, lovin touchin, homemade love,

I can agree with those. I don't think I've ever heard a better version of either of those live than the studio.

Great topic, Deb. The first one that comes to mind is Stay Awhile. Nothing beats live Stay Awhile. Any Way You Want It is another one and I know a lot of folks will disagree with that. But I like the live faster versions, especially the one on Greatest Hits Live. GHL also has the best LTS. The Captured LTS is pretty damn smokin' though too. I like the live faster version of WITS too (not that I don't like the orginials on these, though).

Live ones that don't come close to the studio tracks? Stone In Love. *ducks* That one doesn't fly live as well as someone with a user name like mine would hope. EXCEPT for the one on the Houston thing, but mostly just because that one has COWBELL Still my favorite song though, live or not.

Probably because the guitars give it a fuller sound, but I like Wheel in Sky a lot better live then on the CD. Only know what it sounded like live with Augeri, never saw SP or JSS do it, but that's definitely one I'd pick.

I can agree with those. I don't think I've ever heard a better version of either of those live than the studio.

just opinion, but i so disagree, i think the GH Live version is the best version. it's one of my favorite journey songs, yet the studio version is not, lol... go figure.

any way you want it is terrible live. It's not that great of a song period. It's one chord progression over and over...

I think Where Were You was killer live during Perry's glory years. The Captured recording is amazing.

I prefer studio over live period. The vocals are more relaxed, and you get the sound that the band wanted to portray.

Songs that come close live, to me, are:

Mother Father from 81.
Patiently "The One"
Soto's Edge Of The Blade live - I prefer this to Perry's studio version
Seperate Ways from 82's Days On The Green

Wheel and Any Way You Want It are definitely better in Studio. Live can't touch the feel of these songs from the studio.

That's just what I was going to say, PC. That boot, in my opinion, is the best live concert I've ever heard, Perry's vocals soar, not just on Patiently, but Winds of March and a lot of others also. Boy would I love to find a video of that concert.

I totally enjoy live better than studio in most cases. I, too, listen to Journey every day, and the only songs on my CD's that I put together that are not live are Ask the Lonely and Only the Young. I agree they are better studio versions than live. I'll tell you though, when I heard JSS sing Ask the Lonely live, it was phenomenal.

I normally like live versions of songs better than the studio. There are a couple of exceptions though. For example: "Frontiers" is horrible live...but one of my favorite studio tracks off that album. The layered vox at the end couldn't be duplicated live with just Perry. Now...you put Castronovo and Perry together...I'd probably be sold on the live version.

Great question, Deb! I am honestly overall a huge fan of the live stuff. The whole concert feel just adds to the experience for me. Things may not be as perfect as in the studio, but the live recordings capture the moment in time. One of my favorite live songs is AWYWI. That is the ultimate jump-around-and-have-fun concert song.

And the greatest thing about the live versions of concerts is that I get the Feel of the concert and the interaction with the audience. That's the whole magic to Journey and makes me smile every time. Sometimes, I feel like I'm right there, front and center at the concert, like the Detroit ROR concert.
