I get what you're trying to say. I'm not "bashing" Arnel's stage presence.......it just doesn't do anything for me. Kinda like JSS's stage presence does nothing for JoePa.  Seeing a performer/band member having just a good of a time performing as I (as an audience member) am having taking it all in.........is a huge plus in my books. Heck, on the Arrival dvd watching Deen C just givin' er back there, enjoying the hell out of himself, was one of the first times I really noticed the drummer in a band, per se. You might be right, AP might be in a no win situation...........because if that kind of stage presence and zest doesn't come off naturally, then that is actually almost worse. :?

Exactly. I was just wondering if he actually reads/listens to the posters on this forum and decides to come out all animated. I agree, it could totally backfire!

What this is is a rather sizeable yet passive/aggressive shot across the bow of JSS, first (lidicrously) indicating that JSS' personal knowledge about what the poster accused of being tapes was but 2 cents, ergo opinion only and then (incredibly)accusing him of lying about those 2 cents and the vox being real upon Jeff's clarification.

We then move onto to criticism of JSS' stage persona as being fake, by mentioning various traits JSS stage shows contain (without saying JSS did them) and hoping that AP doesn't do those things which Gary Cherone did in VH, which also looked fake.

The poster seems to think they're being cute, but would probably get more bang for the buck by just manning up and directly confronting and criticizing Jeff.

Oh yeah, that's MUCH clearer!! ;)

If what he does is natural and honest than he will be fine.

All this talk of stage presence and mentioning people like Steven Tyler, Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger...all people I cannot stand to WATCH perform. But it is real so it works for many.

Hold it, Colnel Clink.

I've always said this elusive mumbo jumbo about ALL signers' "stage presence, chrisma, 'it factor'" and on and on ad nauseum do nothing for me.

It's not that JSS' stage presense does nothing for me, it's a non-factor in ALL vocalists for me. Christ Almighty, I still think JSS is the man for this job, just because I don't care if he's spot-welded to one spot on the stage as long as he sounds great doesn't mean I have a single negative feeling on JSS as Journey frontman.

Does Journey definitely use pre-recorded backing vocals? While I know there are much bigger issues with the band these days, I can't help but dislike bands using them. I recently saw Van Halen, and while the show was incredible, the pre-recorded vocals were quite upsetting. I personally, would rather hear the song not as complex as on the record, for the sake of it all being live. But that is my $.02.

I believe Journey has used pre-recorded backing vocals in concert since the Perry days. Steve has mentioned it before in interviews. I don't think it's a big secret, it just makes for a better sound in concert to make up for acoustics, I think.

Yah, I know, I think all Journey fans initially are upset when they hear the band does this. Because one of the reasons we like the band was their ability to sing those lush harmonies live. I'm with you, I'd rather here it 100% live/raw. Man, those "round and round and round" backing vox in the 2001 DVD of Higher Place are just robotic....ugh.

You're right, all I can go on are the youtube clips. But that's all I had to go on with JSS at first too.....and ya can see/hear it in even the "small club" clips of Jeff too. Even the small club ones of JSS, performance wise you can't tell if he is playing in front of 50 or 20,000. Seriously, I can not see AP pulling off LTS live quite the same as Jeff. It takes a natural groove/swagger and I don't see that in AP.

Probably more of a chick thing anyways, so no point in arguing with you about it.

Deb, I'm not into fight or anything but this is my opinion/suggestion.

Why don't you put up a new band and call it the New Journey or something. Hire JSS to front your band (highly unlikely though as he got his own band now i suppose), I bet you'll be pleased on that.

Is that really you on the pic on that avatar??

You know, I thought there was something strange about your reply so I wanted to re-read your post and now I'm wondering if YOU just piggy-backed/twisted my post to express YOUR true feelings on the subject while trying to avoid any direct criticism at yourself? Your "clever" interpretation (re: spin) of my post is clearly more direct and accusational than mine was at JSS. So perhaps you're the one who needs to man up and make your true feelings known? You'll never admit it if it's true, but just between you and I, that was a very impressive spin. ;)
