I had to laugh!

Postby Natalie » Thu Feb 14, 2008 3:08 pm

OK, so I was driving in to work this morning and the radio station that I was listening to was having a contest-caller 15 won a Journey's GH CD.

So, the DJ gets caller 15 on the phone and they start talking Journey. The DJ says something like this "You gotta love Journey-they are always great, but Journey just would not be Journey without Steve Perry. I am getting so tired of all of these 80's bands touring with none of the original members except maybe the drummer."

I started laughing right out loud. I really wanted to call in and ask this guy where he'd been for the last decade plus!!!! I resisted the urge though.

Well that would be one way to look at it. But I think the more accurate way to look at it is that people aren't even aware of post-Steve Perry music.

Well, the truth is that there are a lot of bands out there who have only one or two original members, yet still sell themselves (sometimes unfairly) as that band. Christ...the Temptations, War and the Beach Boys now have members who are younger that me!!

Plus, you can't blame people who are not die-hards to not know anything other that a band's signature. While Journey is not in the Temptations/Beach Boys/War category that I mentioned, the other members of Journey are not household names to the casual fan. Sorry to burst your bubble, people.

My pop is FAR from a hardcore Journey fan - he grew up in the doo-wop era. He's all about tight harmonies and accapella. But he does know of and even likes a few Journey songs...and he's always known who Steve Perry is (many of his friends who still sing in doo-wop bands even agree that SP is THE VOICE). But they wouldn't know any other past or present members from a can of paint.

I do fault this DJ for being in the music industry and not knowing his shit, though. It always pisses me off when I'm correcting something that a radio DJ says wrong. That's what YOU'RE getting paid for, not ME!!!!

What's sad to me is that people not only do not realize that names change in bands, they can't even notice that the faces are different! I can't tell you how many times people swore that Steve Augeri was Steve Perry! Good, God, people he looks nothing like him! Since I missed the JSS era, I can't vouch for what they said about him. :?

How much you want to bet the majority of the people out there don't even realize that the new singer is Asian and speaks with an accent???

What a sad world we live in... Someone said this phrase to me yesterday: "sees everything around them, but nothing right in front of them."

I so agree with this. The people that Journey will be playing to this summer are casual fans who want to hear the songs that they remember. As long as the sound is close to what they remember, they will be happy. Just as these fans don't realize that SP isn't singing, they would not notice or care if NS wasn't there either. I witnessed this first-hand during the 30th Anniv tour. For many people, music is just a back drop in their lives. They don't live and breathe it like some of us do so you can't expect them to follow the day-to-day soap opera that is Journey.

you know your radio station has no budget, when your giving away a greatest hits CD that is 20 years old.

And when you have DJ's who aren't aware of the status of the bands that they play...oy vay. I consider it part of my JOB to know and keep updated on the bands and music I personally play on my radio station and talk about....that guy just made himself look like a total ass!!

No. Not quite. The only radio play Journey gets are the Perry songs. Those who buy the greatest hits and don't bother to catch the 80s All Star tours every summer have no idea what Journey is actually doing. If they don't know that Journey got a new singer its because Journey didn't have any hits with Augeri and has not remained on the front burner. All the greatest hits tours have blended in with all the OTHER 80s nostalgia greatest hits tours.

That guy's comment on the radio just goes to show... you hear "Journey", you think "Perry". Journey has done NOTHING to break from that and give themselves any kind of credibility on their own without using Perry. What they are doing now proves they have no intention of that either. Its either keep rocking the Perry vibe or go down like Titanic.

I read that as the DJ just being sarcastic/funny. I usually hear DJs say, "and, that was Steve Perry from Journey" or something similar after a song plays.
