OT- To All You People With Satelite TV- A Question

Postby scarygirl » Mon Feb 18, 2008 5:24 am

I dogsit from time to time for my employer. They have one of those direct tv packages. Last night in the middle of a movie the tv just flicks off. No reason, nothing, just went off. I thought it was just a fluke, so I turned everything off and back on. Again, it stayed on or a second and then flickered off. When I looked over I noticed that the green (on light) on the home stereo receiver was flickering back and forth. NOt knowing anything about that sort of thing, I just turned if off for good. This has happened before btw. Long story short, each time this has happened I have told my employers about it, and each time they blame me because according to them this NEVER happens to them and being sensitive tv equipment it has to be the human involved! Just so you know they have explicit instruction on how to turn the different components on and off which I follow to the letter.

To those that have satellite tv, any ideas why this happens? Could it be it over heats? I did watch tv for a good part of the day yesterday. This never happens with their satelitte tv in the guest room which leads me to believe there is something wrong with their living room system. Anyway, thanks for the room to rant.

On a side note, a little while back a fuse or something to that effect broke in their microwave and I was blamed for that too. The night before the power in their house had flickered for like ten seconds, dont know if one has anything to do with the other.

We have had DirecTv for about six months, and while we've had our issues with it, what you are describing hasn't happened. If the box has a green light on it, I don't think it's DTV though. Do you know who their provider is? You could do a search for known issues with that service or receiver. I know DTV has technical forums where all kinds of issues are discussed. Maybe you can find an answer that way.

Actually, I just edited my post. It wasn't the direct tv receiver, it was the home stereo component? It controls the tv picture though. Sorry, but I don't understand all these things myself. I just know this has happened to me before, and I was just watching. NOt touching the remote nothing.

It's like everything was on, but the picture would leave And the home stereo picture which controls the sound would flick off.. I know this makes no sense.

Sounds like a over heating issue. They probably don't leave it on long enough to experience the problem. Or, as a last resort it could be a short somewhere caused by other components. For instance, was the microwave or oven on during this? How about a nearby computer or washer/dryer, etc?

I had on my laptop. Maybe that was it? My laptop was on while I was watching tv. I did have on the tv a good part of the day. Guess I should read more. There hardly ever home, so they probably don't use it as much. I feel bad if it was my simply watching too much tv. I don't want to damage anything. Good grief.

PS. I hardly watch tv at home. I don't have expanded cable or satellite. When I dogsit, and am not taking care of the dog, playing it I watch a lot of TCM.

Yeah, we did. I know I keep saying it, but this really is the last straw. I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row monetarily.

It was extremely windy last night. Maybe that did it?

I had Direct TV for several years and now have Dish. I've never had that happen with either service. When there's strong wind and/or heavy rain I lose signal, but I get a screen telling me that's happening.

Question, is there anything sitting on top of the receiver box? That will cause the box to overheat and at times short out.

Good question. Uhm, shoot. I'm trying to visualize here. I don't think so. Maybe. I'm not there anymore, so I honestly don't know. I do know that I keep the cabinent door open when I have the tv on, so that it doesn't over heat. Thanks for the tip. :D

I'm thinking maybe it is over heating. My tv upstairs does that from time to time. It pops off and on at inopportune times.

If it's over heating and only does it when you're there, either they don't watch much TV or they're lying to you about it only happening when you're there. The latter gets my vote.

Thanks. From now on I just won't watch it as much. Like I said, I'm not a big tv fiend really, but I do watch quite a bit when I'm there on the weekend in between taking care of the dog and taking her out to play. I dogsit for the extra cash, and I typically don't go out of the house unless I have to so I won't be tempted to spend it.

If it's over heating I guess my watching it too much would make it my fault. I had read that the new plasma tvs use lots of energy, so I guess that makes sense. I had never really thought about it til now because the two tvs at home are the old fangled kind.

Time to read more.

Our cable box would overheat and it would act strange. I put a fan behind it blowing air out the front, and that fixed the problem. I'm agreeing with the others here that suggested it is overheating.
